In this 2019collection, we have beeninspired by the V8.”Susanna Hansson, Product Manager,Scania Truck GearAttention to detailProduct Manager SusannaHansson shows off one ofthe new Griffin Tech jackets,which in the quilted liningfeatures a pattern inspired bythe truck grille.Scania’s merchandise has to meet the samelevel of quality as the company’s trucks andbuses. After all, it gives the company a positiveimage, bearing the logo and product details thatScania fans have come to associate with theirbeloved brand. A crucial part of the company’sbrand identity, it helps to create a visual sense ofwhat it means to be part of the Scania family. Italso provides Scania fans with the designs andlogos that they’ve come to expect from Scania.One of the key aspects to the integration andauthenticity of Scania product design is thatall the company’s designers work in the samedepartment. So, it does not matter if you are adesigner of a new truck, a t-shirt or anythingelse – everyone can have a say in the process ofdeveloping the products that the customer needs.“We work closely together in an agile processwith continuous reconciliations. We give andtake ideas and inspire each other,” says XavierCarreras Castro, Team Leader Exterior-InteriorDesign.Fredrik Rudenstam, Team Leader Visual andGraphic Design, adds that there is a well-defineddesign process.“We start with the brand, the logotype and thegraphic identity. We have a proud heritage andvalues that we have stood for over many years,and that is fantastic for designers like me to workwith. We also have an exciting future with therelease of new vehicles and that must also bereflected in what we design. For example, inCOLLECTION 20195

Where it all beginsSenior Graphical DesignerAntonio Cantos drafts aproduct outline on his PenTablet sketch pad.Make a V8 statement in this eye-catching hoodiewith its high definition embroidery.6 COLLECTION 2019the new V8-inspired collection there are watcheswith features from the new trucks, and a sweaterwith the 1969 logo that celebrates the V8’shistory.”To create successful products requires anexceptional attention to detail. The new jackethas a particular feature that shows the amountof thought that goes into the design process.Susanna Hansson, Product Manager, ScaniaTruck Gear, points out a special pattern in thejacket’s lining.“The pattern is inspired by the truck grille,”she says. “We often work with small detailslike this. In this 2019 collection, we have beeninspired by the V8.”Indeed, the exact same pattern can be seenon the grille on the truck itself, and, says Cantos,this is exactly how the designers work. “We lookat the brand and the details in the truck, bothexternal and internal, and translate these into afeature in branded merchandise.”Of course, giving the customers what theywant is also vital. To find out what they arelooking for, the designers spend time togetherwith drivers in the truck to get the right feelingand inspiration. They also meet with driversand visit trade fairs.Fredrik Rudenstam used to be a truck driver,so he can quite easily picture what a driver likes.“Everything we do is based on user insights,what the customer needs and wants,” he says. “Itis essential to know the target group, and we arevery much engaged in the user experience.”A key consideration in all the products’ designprocesses is whether they conform with Scaniavalues. Again, the V8 is a case in point.“When we developed the V8 merchandiseproducts we wanted to emphasise the heritageand also what the V8 represents today: powerand precision. The V8 is a brand that is a sourceof great pride to Scania and to those who driveit,” says Rudenstam.“We speak about a refined exterior representing the cab and powerful core representing thepower from the V8 engine. Precision outside,power inside. These two features normally don’tfit together, but in the V8 they do. You get the

The values of the brand must comethrough in everything we do.“When we design products inspired by ourheritage collection, we want to reflect thetechniques and qualities that were typical forthat period. Time to celebratethegreat V8Scania is launching three new exclusivewatches to mark the 50th anniversaryof the V8 engine. And the Scania R&Ddepartment’s designers have gone onestep further than before by developingthe timepieces from scratch. Our new wayof working with this type of products creates ahigher recognition to the real trucks.”The new models have taken about oneand-a-half years to design and develop. Theconcept and idea phase was in close contactwith the designers Antonio Cantos, Senior12 COLLECTION 2019Graphic Designer and Fredrik Rudenstam,Team Leader Visual and Graphic Design at theR&D department. They sketched out and builtmodels, applied details and produced a wholenew design language.The new line of watches is part of the specialV8 50th anniversary collection and is a tributeto the legendary truck. As an example, the casesare designed with elements and angles takenfrom the V8 truck and its engine.The first model is called “V8 Limited Edition”and is a chronographic high-end watch. Itcomes in only 500 pieces, all numbered on the

The results arethree truly special timepiecesthat do the V8 proud.back. It has black leather straps with the classicred seams from the V8 truck. The model alsohas a timing feature and buttons on the sideinspired by the V8 piston head, as well as apattern with holes connected to the V8 steeringwheel. And the hands of the watch are the sameas the speedometer needles.The second model “V8 Black Edition” hasa sportier design. It has the characteristic redcolour from the V8 truck’s styling kit included onthe strap, which is also inspired by the timing beltin the engine. The rough surface of the bezel ismade to emphasize the tough heart of the truck.On the third one, “V8 Metal Edition”, smallv:s are added around the clock-face, thatemulate the shape of the V8’s logo. Even thiswatch has hands that are the same as the V8’sspeedometer needles, and straps inspired by thetiming belt.All the three watches have an extraordinarycombination of sturdiness and precision. Theyhave solar cell-driven clockworks, which hasa strong connection to Scania’s sustainabilityfocus.When choosing supplier for this project,Scania wanted to make sure that delivery andquality remained high.COLLECTION 201913

The V8 Metal Edition watch hassmall Vs around the clockfacethat emulate the shape of theV8 s logo.“We knew from already working with thisSwiss watch producer that they were the bestfit for us”, says Höglin. “They are renowned,highly skilled and had the capacity to take onthe challenge. All the watches they produce forus has an extra-long warranty and live up to thehigh standards.”“They have the craftmanship in place, theydeliver on time and understand our designneeds. They also have the know-how tomanufacture customised watches with materials that makes our models unique. They evenaccommodated our wish to include the solar14 COLLECTION 2019cell-driven clockworks from Japan. These areto the same high quality, but since the solarcells are not manufactured in Switzerland, thewatches will not have the “Swiss made” sign onthe back”, Höglin says.Even though watches may no longer be anecessity, they are certainly viable, importantand beautiful accessories. The trends of todayare moving from more cutting-edge technologywatches to jewellery-style pieces. But it doesnot have to be a contradiction; whether it is amore advanced technology or a quartz watch,it is always fun with some extra design featuresand surprising details.The watch hour and minutehands are styled after the V8truck’s speedometer.
