BIENVENUE / WELCOMEChers amis,L’image choisie cette année pour illustrer le Festival des Écrivains du Monde organisépar l’université Columbia et la Bibliothèque nationale de France est issue des collectionsmagistrales de la BnF.Ce parchemin datant de la fin du Moyen Âge représente une Terre ballottée de tous côtés etreflète à la perfection la situation périlleuse dans laquelle le monde se trouve aujourd’hui.L’humanité et la planète elle-même sont menacées sur tous les fronts : changement climatique,inégalités en tous genres, intolérance croissante et parfois meurtrière, guerres, populationsciviles forcées à fuir et à se réfugier par millions dans les pays voisins, pour ne citer quequelques exemples.Les solutions à ces problèmes sont complexes et il serait naïf de suggérer que l’art, et lalittérature en particulier, mènera forcément à une résolution.Mais les grands artistes ont la faculté exceptionnelle de pouvoir témoigner avec brio dumonde tel qu’il est. Ce faisant, ils mettent en lumière les conséquences humaines de l’injustice,de l’intolérance, de la répression, de la privation économique et culturelle, de la dégradationde l’environnement ou encore du déni de la dignité individuelle. Cette année, les écrivainsparticipant au Festival viennent des quatre coins de la planète, de quinze pays différents pourêtre tout à fait exact. Des années plus tard, alors qu’elle prépare sa thèseen immunologie à l’université de l’Iowa, elle adopte une stratégie similaire et lit des nouvellesparues dans The New Yorker tout en travaillant au laboratoire. Il y a un peu plus de dix ans,elle a enfin cédé au chant des sirènes : elle a abandonné la médecine et s’est inscrite au célèbreprogramme d’écriture de l’université de l’Iowa.
