INTRODUCTIONEach year the Secretariat of Divine Worship of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishopspublishes the Liturgical Calendar for the Dioceses of the United States of America. This calendaris used by authors of ordines and other liturgical aids published to foster the celebration of theliturgy in our country. The calendar is based upon the General Roman Calendar, promulgated by Pope Paul VI onFebruary 14, 1969, subsequently amended by Pope John Paul II, and the Proper Calendar for theDioceses of the United States of America, approved by the United States Conference of CatholicBishops.1 This calendar has been updated to reflect the names and titles of the various liturgicaldays in conformity with the Roman Missal, Third Edition. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal reminds us that in the cycles of readings and prayersproclaimed throughout the year in the sacred liturgy “the mysteries of redemption are celebratedso as to be in some way made present.” Thus may each celebration of the Holy Eucharist whichis served by this calendar be for the Church in the United States of America “the high point bothof the action by which God sanctifies the world in Christ and of the worship that the human raceoffers to the Father, adoring him through Christ, the Son of God, in the Holy Spirit.”2Sincerely in Christ,Rev. Andrew MenkeExecutive DirectorUSCCB Secretariat of Divine Worship1For the significance of the several grades or kinds of celebrations, the norms of the Roman Calendar should beconsulted (cf. Liturgy Documentary Series 6: Norms Governing Liturgical Calendars, Washington, DC: USCC,1984). For information concerning the choice of texts and formularies, the General Instruction of the Roman Missaland the Introduction to the 1998 revised Lectionary for Mass (cf. Liturgy Documentary Series 1: Lectionary for Mass,Introduction, Washington, DC: USCC, 1998) should be consulted.2General Instruction of the Roman Missal, third edition, no. 16.3

PRINCIPAL CELEBRATIONS OF THE LITURGICAL YEAR 2019First Sunday of AdventDecember 2, 2018Ash WednesdayMarch 6, 2019Easter SundayApril 21, 2019The Ascension of the Lord [Thursday]May 30, 2019Pentecost SundayJune 9, 2019The Most Holy Body and Blood of ChristJune 23, 2019First Sunday of AdventDecember 1, 2019CYCLES — LECTIONARY FOR MASSSunday CycleYEAR CDecember 2, 2018 to November 24, 2019Weekday CycleCYCLE IJanuary 14, 2019 to March 5, 2019June 10 to November 30, 2019Sunday CycleYEAR ADecember 1, 2019 to November 22, 2020The cycles given above have been used in the preparation of this calendar. The readings from theProper of Time and Proper of Saints have been used for all Solemnities and all Feasts since theymust take the place of the weekday readings for those respective days. The readings from theweekday cycle generally are to be used even on days on which a Memorial or Optional Memorialof a Saint occurs. The exceptions to this rule are the Memorials or Optional Memorials whichhave “proper readings” (usually only the Gospel) assigned to them in the Lectionary for Mass andwhich must be used on those days. Substitutions from the Commons or Proper of Saints may bemade for the other readings suggested for those Memorials or Optional Memorials. The PriestCelebrant, however, should not omit “too often or without sufficient cause the readings assignedfor each day in the weekday Lectionary” (Introduction to the Lectionary for Mass, no. 83). In thiscalendar, Optional Memorials are designated by the use of italics within brackets. The Scripture citations and Lectionary numbers for all readings are from the Lectionary for Massfor Use in the Dioceses of the United States of America, second typical edition (1998/2001), andthe Lectionary for Mass Supplement (2017), which is based on the Ordo Lectionum Missæ, editiotypica altera (1981). The spellings of the names of Saints and Blesseds are from the RomanMissal, Third Edition (2011), based on the Missale Romanum, editio typica tertia emendata(2008).5

The 2019 liturgical year begins on the First Sunday of Advent, December 2, 2018.2. Scripture citations are based on the New American Bible with the revised New Testament andmay differ slightly from the citations given in the Ordo Lectionum Missæ (1981) due todifference in versification.3. In the preparation of diocesan and provincial Calendars and ordines, the dedication of diocesancathedrals, the dedication of parish churches, and special days of prayer (cf. GeneralInstruction of the Roman Missal, no. 373) should be added, along with other commemorationsof Saints and Blesseds which are included in those particular calendars.4. Regarding the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, the ecclesiastical provinces of Boston,Hartford, New York, Newark, Omaha, and Philadelphia have retained its celebration on theproper Thursday, while all other ecclesiastical provinces of the United States of America havetransferred this Solemnity to the following Sunday, June 2, 2019. In those archdioceses anddioceses, Thursday, May 30, 2019, is observed as an Easter Weekday.5. Outside Advent, Christmas Time, Lent, and Easter Time, on Saturdays which have nocommemoration having the rank of Obligatory Memorial or higher, a Mass in honor of theBlessed Virgin Mary may be celebrated. This is indicated in the calendar by “BVM.” Thereadings and prayers may be selected from the Collection of Masses of the Blessed VirginMary.6

6. In a decree dated March 23, 1992, the Bishop of Honolulu designated Christmas and theImmaculate Conception as the only two Holydays of Obligation for the State of Hawaii. Thisimplements the indult received from the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Disciplineof the Sacraments on May 26, 1990, and the subsequent nihil obstat from the NationalConference of Catholic Bishops allowing Hawaii to legislate on this matter in accord with thepolicies of the Episcopal Conference of the Pacific (CEPAC).7. Since the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated on June 28, 2019, theMemorial of Saint Irenaeus, Bishop and Martyr, is omitted this year.8. Since the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles, is celebrated on June 29, 2019, theMemorial of the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary is omitted this year.9. Since December 8, 2019, is the Second Sunday of Advent, the Solemnity of the ImmaculateConception of the Blessed Virgin Mary is transferred to Monday, December 9, 2019. Theobligation to attend Mass, however, does not transfer. The Optional Memorial of Saint JuanDiego Cuauhtlatoatzin, December 9, is omitted this year.10. This liturgical calendar includes some but not all civic holidays commonly celebrated in theUnited States (for example, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc.) andmakes no suggestions of Mass formularies for those days.7
