Alteryx Certification ProgramCore Designer Practice Exam

Question 1Consider the following workflow (assume no leading or trailing spaces):The Text Input tool is configured as follows:The Formula Tool contains the expression: FindString([Data], “B”)What is the result of the formula? (1 pt)A) 4B) 5C) 6D) 7

Question 2Which tool is used to create the following output from the given input table? (1 pt)A)B)C)D)

Question 3You are given a table of numbers and asked to calculate the average value of all the numbers. The desired output should have a column where the average value of all the numbers is storedper row, as shown below.Which workflow(s) will generate the desired output? Select all that apply. (3 pts)A)B)C)D)E)

Question 4Where will the outputdata.yxdb file be saved? (1 pt)A) In You will receive an error. ‘.\’ is not recognized by the output toolB) On the machine’s desktopC) In the parent folder of the folder where the workflow is savedD) In the same folder where the workflow is saved

Question 5Match the file extension with the Alteryx file type: (1 pt)Alteryx WorkflowAlteryx Analytic ApplicationAlteryx MacroAlteryx Field TypesAlteryx DatabaseAlteryx Packaged Workflow.yxft.yxwz.yxdb.yxmd.yxzp.yxmcNote: In the examination, matching will be done with drop-downs in the right-side table.

Answer KeyQuestion 1) B. This question is testing two concepts – 1) formula knowledge and 2) familiaritywith zero-based strings expressions. The FindString() function searched for a specified bit oftext and returns the beginning position from where the text was found. In this case, we werelooking for what position “B” was at in the string “Data Blending with Alteryx. In this case, wesee that it is the 6th character in the string. But hold up! Alteryx functions start the count ofcharacters at zero. While you count the “D” as 1, Alteryx starts at 0. Knowing this, we realizethat “B” is really the 5th character. Therefore, the Answer is B.Question 2) A. While daunting, this question should have been answered very quickly if youare familiar with the four tools. The first observation that we make is that the resulting dataset has more rows than the initial data set. Looking through the tools, we see three that canonly generate new columns, but not new rows. The only tool here that could possible resultin a larger data set it the Generate Rows tool.Question 3) B. This question is worth 3x as much as the others, so you’ll want to spend moretime on questions like these. Additionally, since this is a ‘select all that apply’ question, wecannot simply move on once we find one correct answer, we must verify which options arefeasible. Choice A looks good, but we have no way to join the average calculation from thesummarize back to the original data set. Choice A won’t work. Choice B does work becausethe Append tool does not require and fields to put the average back on the original data set.Choice C shows an option where an average can be calculated, but it would be impossible tokeep the original field and calculate an average in a single tool. Choice D is interesting becausethe result could be a user entered average, but in the formula tool annotation, we see that theaverage function is being used. The average function in the formula tool calculates averagesacross a number of fields while summarize is used to calculate them vertically. Choice E usesthe Weighted Average tool and we are not weighting averages in this case. After checking allthe options, we can conclude that just choice B should be selected.Question 4) D. The question tests knowledge of relative paths. If you are unfamiliar with theconcept (you are not alone!), go into the Designer and simulate the situation. After runningyour workflow, you’ll see that the output is placed in the same folder as the workflow!

Answer KeyQuestion 5) This question can be tricky – especially if you are a beginning user who has notcreated anything outside of workflows. Don’t freak out just yet! You’ll see that all the fileextensions are named similarly to what they represent.Alteryx WorkflowAlteryx Analytic ApplicationAlteryx MacroAlteryx Field TypesAlteryx DatabaseAlteryx Packaged Workflow.yxft.yxwz.yxdb.yxmd.yxzp.yxmcAlteryx Workflow .yxmd (‘md’ is shorthand for module)Alteryx Analytical Application .yxwz (‘wz’ shorthand for ‘wizard’ – Apps run with a wand)Alteryx Macro .yxmc (‘mc’ is shorthand for macro)Alteryx Field Types .yxft (‘ft’ is shorthand for field types)Alteryx Database .yxdb (‘db’ is shorthand for database)Alteryx Packaged Workflow .yxzp (‘zp’ is short for zipped file)
