2COURSE OUTLINEAdvanced HigherComponent 1 –Literary StudyComponent 2 –Textual AnalysisComponent 3 –Portfolio WritingComponent 4 –DissertationThe purpose of thisquestion paper is toassess candidates’ability to apply theskills of criticalanalysis andevaluation topreviously studiedliterary texts.The purpose of thisquestion paper is toassess candidates’ability to apply the skillsof critical analysis andevaluation to an unseenliterary text.This portfolio will givecandidates an opportunityto demonstrate thefollowing skills,knowledge andunderstanding throughwriting in different genresfor a range of purposesand audiencesThis dissertation will givecandidates an opportunityto demonstrate thefollowing skills, knowledgeand understanding throughindependent planning,research and presentationof their knowledge andunderstanding of an aspector aspects of literature This dissertation willbe between 2,500and 3,000 words longand will have 30marks (30% of thetotal mark). Candidateswill chooseone questionfrom a rangeof questionsand write acritical essayin response toit.Candidateswill selectfrom poetry,prose, prose,prose nonfiction ordrama. Thiswill have 20marks (20% ofthe totalmark). Candidates willchoose onequestion on anunseen literarytext and write anextended criticalanalysis of it.Candidates willselect frompoetry, prose,prose non-fictionor drama. Thiswill have 20marks (20% ofthe total mark).The candidatesare free to selectthe same genrein each questionpaper.Candidates will producetwo pieces of writing fortwo different purposesand audiences. Thewriting can be from any ofthe following types: ivepoetryprose fictiondramaThere is no requirement towrite both creatively anddiscursively.This Component will have30 marks (30% of the totalmark). Up to 15 marks willbe awarded for each pieceof writing selected for theportfolio. The text(s) chosenmust not be thesame as those usedin the Literary Studyquestion paper.

3Internal Assessments Evidence for Creation & Production and Analysis & Evaluation internalunit assessments will be covered through the candidate’s portfolio writingand dissertation.External Assessment Question paper — Literary StudyThis question paper will be set and marked by SQA, and conducted incentres under conditions specified for external examinations by SQA.Candidates will complete this in 1.5 hours. Question paper — Textual AnalysisThis paper will be set and marked by SQA, and conducted in centresunder conditions specified for external examinations by SQA. Candidateswill complete this in 1.5 hours.There will be a short break between the papers.Portfolio GuidelinesThe piece of writing must be unassisted and produced under a system ofsupervision which guarantees authenticity through a process requiring thecandidate to submit the following at appropriate stages: Draft title and proposalsOutline planFirst draftFinal versionEvaluation of final portfolio piece

5Home Support Provide access to quality newspapers and journalism Discuss with them the texts they are studying in class, ask them tosummarise the main events, tell you about the characters/ themes/ settings Allow them to research their texts online to find secondary criticism andother responses Take a note of websites that they visit or books they read in preparation fortheir folio essays- it is crucial that they include a bibliography to avoidplagiarism Ask to see their writing.
