Our coursesBEng MEng Civil EngineeringOur courses will help you meetthe educational requirementsneeded on your journey tobecoming a chartered civil,structural or highway engineer.Year twoApplicants to the MEng courses will usually bemade a dual offer of AAA for MEng and AABfor BEng. This means you’ll receive two offersfor one UCAS application and a place in thedepartment even if you narrowly miss the AAArequirement. Students performing well on theBEng course have the option to transfer to theMEng course.Core subjects continue alongside a rangeof optional modules including individualinvestigative project and major groupdesign project.The BEng degree is a three-year programmeand students following this route will need toundertake further study if they wish to becomechartered engineers. Many students, especiallythose from overseas, choose to do our BEng andthen stay to complete one of our accreditedMSc degrees.Our civil engineering courses provide a solidgrounding in the core disciplines of structures,hydraulics, geotechnics, materials, surveying andconstruction management. There is an emphasison project work throughout and a wide range ofmodule choices to develop your specialistskills in later years.Year oneIn your first year you will be introduced tothe core disciplines and the context of civilengineering and engineering design projectwork. Professional skills are explored inworkshops. How will I study?Engaging study,incredible resultsStudents are taught througha combination of lectures,practical sessions andproject work.TeachingThe main forms of teaching are lectures,practical sessions and project work. These aresupplemented by problem-solving classes,workshops and tutorials. For a typical week inyour first year, you can expect to attend 15 hoursof lectures and workshops and approximatelyfive hours of other classes for Computer AidedDesign (CAD), Building Information Modelling(BIM) and laboratory and project sessions.During your final year, you will undertake a majorproject which reflects your interests and thoseof your supervisor. This project is key to yourdevelopment as an independent engineer.Personal tutorsAll students have a personal tutor who willreview your academic progress each semesterand who is also available to help with anypersonal matters. Tutorials take place initiallyon a weekly basis, typically in groups of fourstudents in the first year. Tutorials can help todevelop your communication skills, personalorganisation and planning towards graduateemployment.AssessmentAll undergraduate degree programmes inthe University are modular, which means youundertake modules of study with assessment atthe end of each semester, with most modulesassessed using a mixture of coursework andexams. Some modules such as projects don’thave any exams and students submit reports,portfolios or in some cases presentation forassessment. As well as written exams, weuse eAssessments and eLearning approachesincluding quizzes and tests.On a BEng course, your graduating mark is madeup of 33% from your second year and 67% fromyour third year. If your third year is an industrialplacement, your graduating mark is made up of33% from your second year and 67% from yourfourth year. On an MEng course, your graduatingmark is made up of 20% from your second year,40% from your third year and 40% from yourfourth year.
