Camp Perry Opens National Matches with Resounding First ShotBy Craig Shoup, Fremont News-MessengerERIE TOWNSHIP - Cris Stone, vice chair for the Civilian Marksmanship Program at Camp Perry, saidthere are three “ping” sounds that linkCamp Perry, Augusta, Georgia, andOmaha, Nebraska.Stone, who opened the nationalcompetition matches at Camp Perryon Monday with the traditional FirstShot Ceremony, said everyone isprobably familiar with the ping abaseball makes off a metal bat duringthe College Baseball World Series. Some are familiar with the pingsound a golf ball makes off a metalclub at August National Golf Course, home of the Masters golf tournament.“But the ping of an aluminumbat is not nearly the authoritative andMr. Cris Stone, Vice Chair, CMP Board of Directors and long-time competitor and CMP supporterfired the official First Shot of the 2019 National Matches at Camp Perry.resonant ping of a clip being ejectedout of an M-1 rifle,” said Stone.Nothing sounds quite like the boom coming from a rifle sending a piece of lead barreling several hundred yards away at a speed of hundreds of feet per second.“There are only a few places known only by their locations rather than what happens there,” said Stone.“And that’s because of their history.“College baseball players talk about the road to Omaha, or they say, ‘If we win this one we can go toOmaha,’” stone continued. “These places are famous destinations, because of the greatness of what hashappened there.”Continued on Page 3SFC Dana Bowman, a former U.S.Army Golden Knights skydiverand double-amputee, gracefullyparaglided into the First Shot ceremony by plane with a 60-footAmerican flag in tow.

National Trophy Rifle and Pistol MatchesThe National Trophy Rifle and Pistol Matches are the annual U. S. National Championship in service pistol and service rifle shooting. TheNational Trophy Matches were established by federal law in 1903, are still conducted under the statutory authority of the U. S. Code (Title 36USC § 40725-40727) and are now governed by the Civilian Marksmanship Program. Shooters from all over the U. S., civilian and military, testtheir skills and compete to determine the nation’s best service pistol and rifle shooters. To fulfill the CMP’s statutory responsibility to “instructcitizens in marksmanship,” the National Trophy Rifle and Pistol Matches are open to all shooters regardless of skill level. Beginners competeand learn while shooting side by side with champions. The tradition of the matches and their competitions for prestigious national trophiescelebrate marksmanship excellence and provide incentives to develop individual marksmanship skills, equipment and a national competitioninfrastructure. The CMP National Trophy Rifle and Pistol Matches are held in conjunction with the NRA National Rifle and Pistol Championships through a partnership between the two organizations. The Ohio National Guard and U. S. Army Reserves also provide vital support forthe matches. The CMP National Trophy Rifle and Pistol Matches and the NRA National Rifle and Pistol Championships are collectively knownas the NATIONAL MATCHES.CMP National Trophy Pistol Matches StaffMark Johnson, CMP Chief Operating OfficerChristie Sewell, CMP Programs ChiefDana Bacak-Lynd, CMP Assistant Programs ChiefSteve Cooper, CMP North General Manager &Marketing ManagerChristine Elder, CMP Communications ManagerShannon Hand, CMP Competitions ManagerThe Civilian Marksmanship Program publishes this SpecialEdition of the 2019 National Trophy Matches Results Bulletin aspart of its programs to promote competitive shooting. First Shot Ceremony ContinuedBefore he squeezed the trigger and sent a bullet barreling intothe distance at Rodriguez Range to officially open the nationalmatches, Stone said Camp Perry is one of those places, like Augustaand Omaha, that is known more by name, then the event that takesplace.Stone, a West Point, cadet, once shot at Camp Perry, saying itwas a goal for many of the cadets to qualify for their team, becausethat meant they would shoot at famed Camp Perry.“I knew if I made the intercollegiate team, then I would go to aplace called Camp Perry,” Stone said. “I didn’t know Camp Perry, but I knew it had to be a special place.”Many war heroes have shot at Camp Perry over the 113 years ofits existence.Stone’s shot is the latest in a long line of openings to the national matches where close to 4,000 shooters from around the world willcompete in air rifle and pistol matches.2 019CAMP PERRYMr. Cris Stone opted to fire his own M1 Garand for the First ShotCeremony.Top photos: Distinguished guests, including (left) Cris Stone, CMP CEO Judy Legerski and Congressman Bob Latta of Ohio’s 5th district, attended the First Shot Ceremony.Bottom: (left) Cris Stone has always worked at the ground level of CMP, seen here with a few of the hard-working seasonal CMP employees. First Civilian Team in History Takes Home Gold Cupat National Trophy Pistol MatchesBy Ashley Brugnone, CMP WriterTeam members Jon Shue,Tom Willats, Neil Roberts and Cecil Rhodesmade history in the 2019NTT event. Presenter:Col Randall ShearsCAMP PERRY, Ohio – “Civilian teams are not supposed towin the Gold Cup,” said Christopher “Neil” Roberts, smilingand having lighthearted conversation with the other members ofhis North Carolina Rifle and Pistol Association team – all still inshock at what they had just accomplished earlier that day.He was referring to the award given to the Overall Scoringteam in the National Trophy Team (NTT) Match fired during theCivilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) 2019 National TrophyPistol Matches. The NTT is a prestigious event, won every yearsince 1920 by skillful military teams – that is, until this year.Breaking the near 100-year history of the event, Roberts, along with teammates Cecil Rhodes, Jon Shue and Tom Willats, claimed the overall spot and the accompanying Gold Cup afteroutshooting both civilian and military assembled teams, with acombined score of 1109-30x.“It was shocking,” said Willats, 56, of Raleigh. “It was reallyexciting.”It was only just prior to the National Matches that they haddiscussed putting together a team for Camp Perry. The men havebeen acquainted with each other through competition for years, especially from the Eastern CMP Travel Games held annually atCamp Butner in North Carolina, where Shue and Willats havewon the Pistol Team Match together in the past.Regulars at the National Matches for over 20 years now, themen thought it would be fun to assemble a North Carolina teamto fire in the NTT Match – and the melded chemistry of the groupturned out to be more powerful than they had realized.“We weren’t even sure who was going to be shooting until wewere starting the match,” Roberts, 46, of Charlotte, joked. “Butit worked out.”It was his first time shooting the pistol team match at CampPerry, serving as the “new shooter” (that is, new to the match)that is required for the NTT. Finally set with their team, the crewcame into the match with only a goal of beating the other stateassociation team, certainly not the mindset of taking home theultimate prize.“We were hoping to win the civilian part, the OglethorpeCup, then as we got to talking, we thought, ‘We might be in thisthing ’” Roberts explained with a hearty laugh. And, of course they were in it. The team had the talent, with allfour members having earned Distinguished Service Pistol Badgesyears ago and having marksmen who had competed in the NTTbefore, aware of its unique challenges.Rhodes, 62, of Clayton, who has been coming to Camp Perryfor the last 22 years, had only fired in the team match once beforeand was let down by its outcome. This year, he picked the righttime to try it again and credits his team for giving him a secondchance.“These guys carried me all the way. It was actually my worstmatch of the day, but these guys shot so well that it actuallypushed us over the top, so it was really great,” he said with asmile. “I’m grateful to Jon for letting me shoot again. I had fun.”Having now reminded the competitive shooting communitythat anything really is possible on the sacred grounds of CampPerry, the guys think more civilian teams will sign up for the NTTin the future, and the men from the Tarheel State will be readyfor them – already set on defending their title at next year’s eventwith fresh recruits in the works. In other National Pistol events, team member Jon Shue, 38, notonly took home the Gold Cup Trophy and the Oglethorpe Trophy4

It’s been a long timecoming,” he said. “It’s one of those things whereyou shoot for it, shoot for it, shoot for it, and thenone day you shoot your personal best. And that’swhat happened.”Shue also took home the Citizen Military Pistol Trophy as the High Civilian in the NTI and the Team member Jon Shue looks on as team members shoot the NTT Pistol Course of Fire.Anheuser Busch Trophy as the High Civilian inHe also teamed up with the Overall Junior Pistol competitor ofthe NTI-NTT Aggregate.Other outstanding performances during the National Trophy the matches, Heather Powers, 19, of West Falls, NY, in the JuniorPistol Matches included SFC Adam Sokolowski, 40, of the Army Team event to earn the top spot for the second year with a score ofMarksmanship Unit (AMU), who fired a score of 388-13 for the 545-15x.Devin LaCross, 17, of Jackson, NJ, topped the CMP EIC Serviceoverall win in the President’s Pistol event.William Thompson, 67, of El Paso, TX, won the M9 EIC Pistol Pistol Junior competitors, with a score of 281-4x.For a complete list of results of the National Trophy PistolMatch fired during the Small Arms Firing School by just one pointhttps://ct.thecmp.org/app/v1/index.php?do match&task edit&ma– collecting a score of 261-3x.Sam Kwon, 19, of New York, NY, nearly swept the Junior events, tch 18033.Photos can be found on the CMP Zenfolio page at https://cmp1.claiming the .22 Rimfire Pistol, the President’s Pistol Match (for thesecond time) and received the G.P.
