WHY DO WE ASK FORA PORTFOLIO?At DMU we have put everything in place to help you build the skillsand confidence you need to succeed in the world. We ask to look ata portfolio as part of our selection process to give us an idea of yourskills, help us understand if you will enjoy studying with us and to makesure you are choosing the right course for you.A good portfolio should contain quality work: it’s not about quantity.Be selective about what to include and avoid repetition, werecommended 15 to 25 pieces. Ensure that your work is clearly laidout and easy to look through.We receive and view a variety of portfolios, and whether you are currentlyinvolved in creative studies or not, we will look for the potential in yourwork so please respond to the advice in this guide as best you can.WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR? A passion for textiles and materials for fashion. Who or whatinspires you in in the field of art and design, particularly in textiles,surface and/or colour Enthusiasm for making and your interest in contemporary design Drawing skills – in the broadest sense How you generate and develop your ideas Your experimental approach to handling and developing materialsand textiles Your potential to learn and have ambitions for your own future,along with showing your creativity and imagination02
WHAT SHOULD APORTFOLIO CONTAIN?DRAWINGPROJECTS Your digital portfolio needs to demonstratefashion drawing in a broad sense Show your drawing ability through relevantstill life, life drawing and initial designsketches. Include colour work where you canWe want to see how you develop an ideaand how you research and respond to aproject brief Show evidence of a project in your portfoliothat demonstrates creativity, a deepinvolvement in your work and your conclusionor final idea This could be any art or design project, eitheras part of your course or an independentproject Include your personal work, it showsyou can work independently, without beingdriven by a brief or a deadline The use of Photoshop, Illustrator or CADfor illustration and technical elements andgeneral presentation can be usedSKETCHBOOKS Sketchbooks reveal how you utilise imageryand a concept to develop ideas throughexperimentation. They will show us how youapproach a project, as well as evidence of thesubject matter that inspires you You should include primary and secondaryresearch source material, such as exhibitionvisits, study trips abroad, artists’ inspirationand own interests Include visual references to contemporaryartists and designers, and references tocontemporary and historical practices to thatshow your interests in textile for fashion inthe widest senseMAKING Evidence that you enjoy designing usingmaterials. We want to see 2D to 3D designdevelopment and experimentation withmaterials. Include two to three examples Photographs of your 3D work, maquette,models and finished designs is helpful to see0304
HOW TO PHOTOGRAPH ANDDIGITISE YOUR WORK Take the highest quality images you can ofyour work, most smart phone cameras willhave a high enough resolutionGood lighting is really important, try tophotograph your work in front of a windowto provide bright natural lighting withoutshadows or distorted colours. The flash onyour phone may be too bright! Make sure any photographs of your workare taken at the best angle to showcase allaspects of it – decide if landscape or portraitis best for the image so there is no wastedspace in your photograph It’s best to place your work against a plainbackground when photographing it sothat it’s easy to see and there is nothingdistracting from the work When scanning your work make sure youchoose a high-quality resolution and largefile size to ensure it is not compressed ordistorted Make sure it’s clear what your work is andsome of the techniques used to create it.
