Aquifer Protection Guidelines Revisions were made to the AquiferProtection Guidelines in response togrowing concerns with the settlementof boreholes INDOT follows 312 IAC 13 regardingmaterial used to backfill a borehole Any other material needs to beapproved by INDOT prior to use

Aquifer Protection Guidelines Backfilling Revisions: Boreholes depths between 0 to 15 ft (after cave-in)- backfill with salvage soil up to theupper 2.0 ft and then bentonite chips used for the upper 2.0 ft Boreholes depths greater than 15 ft (after cave-in)- the entire hole shall be backfilled witha plugging material Plugging materials must consist of one or a combination of the following: Neat cement with not more than five percent (5%) by weight of bentonite additiveBentonite slurry, which can include polymers designed to retard swellingPelletized, medium or coarse grade crushed bentoniteOther materials approved by the commission as defined in 312 IAC 13

Aquifer Protection Guidelines Revised language to include a review ofRed Flag Investigation and/orEnvironmental Document prior to drilling Red Flag Investigations give a generaloverview of the environmentalconditions Usually one of the first documents to becompleted for a project Red Flag Investigations include: InfrastructureWater ResourcesMiningHazardous Material ConcernsEcological InformationCultural Resources

Aquifer Protection Guidelines Additional guidelines were added forbackfilling in special conditions suchas voids and artesian conditions Artesian conditions- use of a heavygrouting mix Voids- use of grouting basket or plug

Backfilling with Special Instrumentation Piezometer installation and backfillinginformation has been removed from the AquiferProtection Guidelines Piezometers shall be installed and backfilled inaccordance with INDOT Specification 204.04 Inclinometer installation and backfilling has beenupdated and is still part of the Aquifer ProtectionGuidelines Inclinometer installation guidelines followAASHTO R 45-13 Inclinometer casing shall be abandoned using abentonite slurry or neat cement within 2 feet ofground surface Casing shall be terminated and capped withconcrete

Casing drilling, otherwise known as drilling with casing (DwC) or casing while drilling (CwD) is an alternative drilling technique to the conventional drilling method. Casing drilling involves the simultaneous drilling and casing of well with a (active-standard) casing string. It is mandatory to note that casing is the same grade and weight as in

drilling tools designed to cut faster, straighter and use less energy. Geotechnical Core Drilling Geotechnical core drilling is part of the site investigation process to assess the suitability and design of structures: hydro-dams, building foundations, caissons, and other supports. This type of drilling is characterized by numerous short holes.
