Chemical industryDrying cylindersA customer had major concerns withhigh maintenance costs of their installedsleeve bearings. Grease-lubricated 01BCP 180 mm EX (gunmetal cage and C5clearance) and GR bearings (C3 clearance) with high-temperature packingseals (HTP) were seen as the ideal solution to redeem this.The SKF Cooper bearings were made tospecial dimensions to match the footprint of the sleeve bearings.By changing from sleeve bearings toSKF Cooper split roller bearings fitted tothe drying cylinder support rollers, thecustomer’s maintenance time andmaintenance overhead costs have beenreduced. The customer has also benefited from power savings.The SKF Cooper bearings are completely accessible in place. The split feature of the bearings permits access forinspection or maintenance without having to move any adjacent motors orgearboxes.The figure top left shows the drying cylinder with the sleeve bearing in placeprior to conversion.The conversion to SKF Cooper bearingsand SKF seals is shown bottom left.8

Conveyor bearingsWater collected in the tail drum pit andentered the tail drum bearings. As aresult, the SNL 515–612 bearing fittedto the 100 mm shaft failed every 2-3months.To rectify the problem, SKF recommended a BCP 100 mm GR (fixed) andEX (expansion) bearings.The water penetration problem wassolved by using an SKF Cooper SRS sealwhich is suitable for wet but not submerged applications. The SRS seal isavailable in high and low temperatureversions (–20 to 100 C).The bearings are lubricated to SKFspecifications and have provided continuous operation for over a year (at timeof printing) with no problems.12

Grain handlingThe original solid bearings werereplaced with standard SKF Cooper splitshaft bearings in flange housings (BCF)and pedestals (BCP) with slight modifications to the housing seating area tomeet the customer’s specification. Thisreduced the bearing change time from1-2 days to 2-3 hours.The germination tank high humiditylubrication problems were addressed bythe combination of the SKF externalmisalignment feature combined withthe SRS seals which remain in completeconcentricity with the shaft at all times.This keeps out foreign matter and lubrication retention is greatly improvedwhich increases bearing life.16

Figure #The previously fitted SF75/1075/75bearings used on this 600 staggeredbucket elevator had the 75 mm,106 r/min drive shaft bearings fitted intrapped applications behind a 13-1 gearreduction box, which caused immensemaintenance access problems.In order to reduce the customer’s maintenance expense, SKF recommended 01EBCDFN 75 mm EX (expansion) and GR(fixed) bearings.17

Link spindles andpilger millsFigure 1Pilger millsSKF has global experience in pilger millbearings, the smallest is an 01 B 125mm GR fitted to a German pilger mill,the largest application uses SKF Cooper03 500 mm bearings, these examplesare in Germany, India and Japan.Figures 1 and 2A SKF Cooper 01 B 560 mm link spindledrive to a high speed reversing(78 r/min in 2 seconds) rolling mill.The use of 01 Series bearings, doublemounted in one specially manufacturedhousing provided the required loadcapacity while meeting the high speedreversal speed requirements.Figure 3Assembling 01 B 600 mm EX in Finland.SKF Cooper has a proven history of linkspindle applications throughout theworld with spindle support bearingsfrom 280 mm up to 775 mm bearingsFigure 318Figure 2

Paper and timberAgitators, mixers, conveyors,chippers, debarkers and sawsTrapped 01 BC 315 EX ATL and 01 BC415 EX ATL bearings are shown in useon agitators in the paper industry.The aluminium triple labyrinth sealused in this application, combined withthe recommended full pack grease,prevent water intrusion in the event ofstuffing box failure. If there is a stuffingbox failure, downtime is kept to a minimum as the split to the shaft featurepermits easy replacement and inspection in the shortest possible time.Prior to the installation of SKF Cooperbearings, the plant was frequently shutdown to replace flooded bearings.Also shown are SKF applications onchippers, conveyors and saws.22

Quarry industrybearingsQuarrying applicationsSKF Cooper bearings are fitted tonumerous applications in the quarryindustry ranging from ball mills to conveyors, crushers, under rollers andreciprocating screens.23

Irrigation generator setsRunnning at 1,200 r/min, these 01 BCF508 EX TL flange bearings have savedthe customer days of maintenancedowntime installing new bearings onthese water powered generator sets.The continually damp and sometimesvery wet environment required thespecification of ATL seals to preventwater penetrating the bearing.The use of ATL seals provides optimumbearing life and excellent lubricationretention for this application.25

MiscellaneousapplicationsAsphalt plantsThis application is a conversion from aSolid ‘Self Lube’ (shown lower right) to asplit-to-the-shaft 01E 65 mm GR SKFCooper SN-compatible pedestal.The customer required a maximumoperating temperature of 100 C on thisinclined 62 bucket elevator. The loadcapacity of the elevator is 1,500 kg. Thisis a typical trapped application that iswell suited for SKF Cooper splitbearings.29

Water treatmentFigure 1Figure 1 and 2The use of SKF Cooper bearings in flocculator basins is widespread, due to theexcellent sealing qualities of ATL sealwhen operated in submerged conditions. This is one of the many sealingoptions available with an SKF Cooperbearing.Many water companies use up to 140Cooper BCP’s in sizes from 27/16 in to4 7/16 in.Figure 2Figure 3Temperatures vary from 320 F in winterto 700 F in summer. A food grade greaseis usually specified for this application.Figures 3 and 4A water company in Australia uses oillubricated SKF Cooper CT13832 special12 1/2 in thrust bearings for their verticalpump in the top position.For the lower position radial bearingsare used - SKF Cooper 02 BCFS 300mm EX and 02 BCPS 300 mm EX.Figure 430

The customerrequired a special made-to-order shaftsize solution, a custom four-part flangehousing to support installation due tospace and advanced bulk head sealing.Providing a significant improvement inbearing life and reduction in bearingoperating temperature compared to theprevious solution.Further turbine applicationsSKF Cooper has considerable water turbine experience with applications inCanada, Italy, France and USA. Bearingspecifications are from 01 BCP180 mmEX and GR on a horizontal turbine tofour 01 BCF 380 mm EX in specialflange housings on four turbines.31

MiscellaneousapplicationsStacker reclaimerThis bucket wheel stacker reclaimer canhandle 3 500 tonnes per hour and theboom can operate on a pile up to 50 feethigh. The slewing ring pinnion gear issupported by a 6 1/2 inch and 7 inch01 Series SKF Cooper bearings in flangehousings.SKF Cooper bearings up to 380 mm indiameter are used on the shaft of thebucket wheel as shown below.32

Mobile shiploaderFor operation in Saudi Arabia, thismobile shiploader is designed to receivecement clinker from 50 tonne dumptrucks and discharge into vessels at acontinuous handling rate of 1 200tonnes per hour.The SKF Cooper BCF (flange) bearingcan be seen at the head of the retractible cascade chute.33
