Company HistoryProud of the Past, Prepared for the FutureIn 1954, Abbott Engineeringand Manufacturing Co.began producing soft jaws andspecialized tooling on a subcontract basis in Phoenix, AZ.The business initially consistedof one employee operating outof a rented Quonset hut, butquickly matured into a dynamic,profitable corporation.In 1955, Abbott built the nation’sfirst Pie Jaw brand chuck jaw.This new type of jaw eliminatedthe problems inherent in rectangular jaws. Drawing on theirexperience and expertise, Abbottbegan testing their conceptthoroughly. The prototype setconsisted of three aluminumcircular segmented jaws thatwere machined out ofan aluminum billet.Shortly after that, thefirst order was placedfor the new, innovativeproduct.Spurred on by costcutting techniques, anexpanding product lineand rapidly increasing acceptance of itsPie Jaw innovation,Abbott emerged intonational prominencein the early 1960s. By1968 the company2name had changed to AbbottAluminum Chuck Jaws, adivision of How-Mil Enterprises,Inc. With the advent of CNCmachines, the product line wasfurther expanded to includetooling columns, tooling blocks,master plates and segments,angle plates and parallels.In early 1990, Carl Reed joinedAbbott Aluminum Chuck Jawsas President and Chief ExecutiveOfficer. Since then, many changeshave taken place within Abbott,resulting in dramatic improvements in the quality, availabilityand affordability of an expandedline of products. However, thebiggest change occurred inAugust 1993.After 40 years of operating abusiness in Phoenix, Arizona,Abbott Aluminum elected tomove its entire operation toManhattan, Kansas. In concertwith the relocation, Abbottfurther expanded its line ofworkholding products to includean extensive inventory of steeland aluminum straight jaws, castiron and steel Pie Jaws and avery comprehensive inventory ofaluminum tooling columns, subplates and associated fixturing.As a direct result of the increasedmanufacturing capabilities,Abbott changed its name toAbbott Workholding Products,which more accurately describedthe multiple product lines beingmanufactured in the37,000 square foot Kansasfacility.Abbott is the originatorof and industry leader inaluminum chuck jawsand other lightweightproducts.
