What is organisational culture?

In simpler terms, culture is ‘The way we dothings around here.’

Culture & performanceUniSA uses the Denison Organisational Culture Survey, which is based on a uniqueculture model designed to shine light on how an organisation’s culture promotesor inhibits its performance.Denison’s research suggests that high performing organisations find ways to: empower and engage their people (involvement) facilitate co-ordinated actions and promote consistency of behaviours withcore values (consistency) translate the demands of the organisational environment into action(adaptability) provide a clear sense of purpose and direction (mission).For Denison; it is not only possible for an organisation to display strong internaland external values, stability and flexibility, it is of critical importance to anorganisation’s long term effectiveness.

Our SurveyThe survey: was designed by academics at the University of Michigan andhas been tested extensively for its validity and reliability has been used by over 5,000 organisations worldwide sincefirst becoming available over 25 years ago is built around 60 core questions measured on a five pointLikert scale results are benchmarked against those of around 500,000individual survey returns from the last two years.To the base 60 benchmark questions, we have added 5questions about innovation, 5 about trust, 5 related to equityand diversity for the Science in Australia Gender Equity (SAGE)Pilot and 4 open text questions.

Understanding the resultsThis is one of thefour key traits thatimpact businessperformance.This is one of the threeindices that measurebehaviours for this trait.Each of the twelve indicesconsists of five surveyitems.This is a percentilescore. A percentile isthe organisation’sscore as a percentagebenchmarked againstthe average of otherorganisations.The profile is coloredto show the quartilein which thepercentile falls. Thisscore, for example,falls in the thirdquartile.

These are the fourquartiles in which yourpercentiles may fall.These are the itemsas they appear onthe survey.The raw score has been reversed for this negativelyworded item marked with an asterisk (*). In all cases, ahigher score indicates a more favorable condition.These are thebenchmarkedpercentile scores foreach line item.The /- symbolsindicate that this itemwas one of the topfive ( ) or bottom five(-) scores on thesurvey.

These are the five items for which your organisationreceived the highest percentile scores. They are listed inorder from highest to lowest score.These are the five items for which your organisationreceived the lowest percentile scores. They are listed inorder from lowest to highest score.The colors indicate the traits the items are to attributedfor easy identification of patterns and trends.
