SYI CelebratesFifth Year in 2017Twenty-three students from twelve Milwaukeeschools participated in the 2017 Marquette LawSchool and Eastern District of Wisconsin BarAssociation Summer Youth Institute (SYI). Theprogram is designed to introduce middle andhigh school students from the City of Milwaukeeto the legal system, expose them to careers in law,and provide them with practical tools for theireducational goals.A major highlight of SYI each year is the oralarguments. Each year students are given a case,are divided into teams, and then must create andpresent an oral argument to a panel of real judgesand lawyers.During the 2017 SYI program, students visitedthe U.S. Federal Courthouse, Milwaukee CountyCourthouse, Robert W. Baird, Foley & Lardner,and Johnson Controls. They also had severalguests speakers, including a special appearance byMilwaukee mayor, Tom Barrett.On the first day of SYI, each student meets theirmentor that has been assigned to them throughthe Honorable Charles N. Clevert, Jr. MentoringProgram. Students and mentors stay in touchthroughout the program and beyond. Mentors areattorneys of the Eastern District of Wisconsin BarAssociation who are willing to share experiencesand advice, as well as help students explore thelegal profession.

Eighteen judges and attorneys judged our 23 students based on presentation of the merits, responseto questions, preparation/familiarity, and speaking ability.
