We love the way theylook, the way they feel, and even the way theysmell (usually). For me,the British cars of the1950s and 60s represent ahigh point in automotivestyling, with their slimchrome bumpers and racyyet-elegant body shapes. And let’s not forget abouttheir interiors. From the drawing roomambiance found inside aJaguar Mark II to thesimple charm of a metaldashboard MGB, they’rein a class by themselves.Next to these paragons ofdesign, today’s cars looklike used bars of soap, oras former GM cochairman Bob Lutz onceput it so well, like “angrykitchen appliances.”Most modern cars haveno class, no charm, andno character whatsoever. On the other hand, there’sno denying the fact thateven in their day the Britishclassics we cherish weregenerally not state of theart in mechanical terms, and the interveningContinued on page 2 – XKEWelcome New Members 2013 Chuck Holzer, Vincentown, NJ, MGBShirley Miller, Colts Neck, NJ, Jaguar XJ6Scott & Laurie Bauman, Pittstown, NJ, Jensen 541Julian & Barbara Wilner, Monroe Township, NJ, MGAWilliam & Meg Kaltnecker, Woodland Park, NJ, Austin-Healey 3000 BJ8

Even though the carwas purportedly garagekept, it turned out to have astupendous amount of bodyrust, so Dick ended upshipping it off to LindleyMotors in Sanatoga, PAhttp://www.lindleymotors.com for a total restorationnot long after purchasing itin 2006. The work theretook about three years.Above is before the restoration, with Dick’s daughter, Jennifer, in the passenger seat, and below is afterthe restoration. Photos courtesy of Dick Nobile.Continued from page 1 - XKEdecades have only served tomagnify their shortcomings.Back in the heyday of LBCs,we fancied ourselves to besports, and therefore wedrove sports cars; theirsqueaks, leaks, andconstant need for tweakswere all accepted as partand parcel of the adventure, while lackluster accelerationand iffy braking were simplyignored. On top of reliabilityand performance issues, wehad to accept the hairshirtnature of the drivingexperience as well.Heavy controls, deafeningroad and engine noise athighway speeds, crampedaccommodations, andinadequate heating andventilation were all takenfor granted. Air conditioningwas practically unheard of.But what if you couldcombine the virtues ofthose old British cars welove, their style andcharacter, withperformance, reliability, andcomfort approaching that ofa modern car? Envision, ifyou will, your favorite oldschool British ride, but withmore than enough power tokeep up with modern traffic, steering effort that doesn’trequire the shoulders ofCharles Atlas, brakes youdon’t have to press on withhalf your body weight, andan interior that doesn’troast you in the summerand freeze you in thewinter. Wouldn’t that bethe perfect enthusiast’scar? Well, this is the storyof one PEDC member’squest to realize that vision.Dick Nobile’s experiencewith the legendary JaguarE-Type goes back to hisdays in dental school, when he acquired a used1970 Series II model andproceeded to employ it ashis daily driver for severalyears. To create hisperfect enthusiast’s car,Dick once again looked tothe E-Type, buying a 1971Series II roadster from aformer patient who in turnhad inherited it from anAt Lindley, the car wascompletely disassembledand the body was strippedto bare metal.Approximately 50% of thecar’s sheet metal wound upbeing replaced, mostly toexorcise the rust demons. For the exterior, Dick chosea stunning 1991 Jaguarcolor known asChampagne. Inside, Lindleyinstalled a full interior kit inJaguar’s Biscuit color frominternationally knownJaguar parts supplier r the bonnet, a .030”overbore produced anominal boost indisplacement to 4.3 liters, but the big story in theengine bay is the use of EFIon a ported cylinder head inplace of the original ZenithStromberg carburetors.Dick designed his own EFIsetup using a Webermanifold with TWM throttlebodies and a BigStuff3engine control unit.(Incidentally, Dick says he’dbe happy to help out anyclub member interested indesigning an EFI system forhis or her own car.)The engine was built by M2Race Systems, formerly ofFarmingdale, NJ but nowContinued on page 7 – XKE

The Terminal Post Page 5 of 22From the Navigator’s SeatBob Canfield, Vice PresidentThe Quest for ishBeing in sales I am obliged to be on time.As far back as I can remember I havebeen somewhat compulsive about beingprompt to appointments. Since I am not ahigh-strung driver I have managed to beon time by leaving early for appointmentsto account for any traffic surprises. Afterall, I grew up in New Jersey, so I am anexpert on heavy traffic.A few weeks ago I sent an e-mail to adistributor salesman to confirm the timeand place of a show. His response was,“see you there 8-ish.” In usual fashionI arrived at 7:45, and when I started togive him grief about arriving at 8:15 hesimply said, “I am within the ish.”As I accumulate years I am finding anappreciation for free time and a slowerpace to things. I think my quest for ishreally began when I bought my Spitfireeight years ago. I spent the first twoyears working on it to make it roadworthy. Since there were no deadlinesI began to relax my usual taskmasterways and found that I really enjoyed thehours spent working on the car in mygarage. I think my LBC has really helpedme appreciate the value of ish.Since I started getting involved withPEDC events a few years ago I havefound that the value of ish also appliesto LBC drives and events. Maybe its realbirthplace can be found in the cars welove. After all, you can’t spell Britishwithout ish.2013 PEDC CalendarPlease spend some time looking overour 2013 calendar. Between PEDCevents and other area LBC shows wehave a pretty full and varied list of eventsthis year, but we are always interested innew ideas. If you have a destination inmind for a PEDC drive, please let meknow. I will help you develop the routeand organize the drive. The more you getinvolved, the more you will enjoy theclub.“Brits on the Beach”The 2013 “Brits on the Beach” registration form should be available on thewebsite by the time you read this. Lookfor it in upcoming newsletters as well.I suggest you reserve your spot now, because I am sure we will sell out as wedid the last few years. Soon we will belooking for sponsors for the trophyclasses and prize table. The sponsorshipform will also be available on thewebsite. If you are interested insupporting the show, or know of abusiness that might be, please start theconversation.@“I think my LBC hasreally helped meappreciate the valueof ish.”A view from our 2012 “Brits on the Beach”show along Main Avenue in OceanGrove, NJ. Taken together, these modifications boostengine output to adynamometer-verified 305bhp and 340 lb-ft of torque, compared to a stock SeriesII car’s optimistic rating of246 bhp. Backing up thisnewly invigorated engine isa 5-speed Tremec gearbox, which improves drivetrainflexibility and lowers enginerevs (and noise) at highwayspeeds.Even though Dick’s E-Typewas already equipped withstandard power brakes andoptional power steering, hewisely chose to upgradeboth during the restoration, going with an XJ6 powersteering rack and installing4-piston Wilwood brakecalipers on vented andcross-drilled discs. The optional factoryair conditioning in Dick’s carwas upgraded with a rotarycompressor, a newcondenser, and conversionto R134a refrigerant.Special high-tech, lowprofile insulation fromKoolMat was installed underthe carpeting to cure theE-Type of its well-knownpropensity for roasting itsoccupants with engine andPage 7 of 22exhaust heat year-round.And, in what Dick considersto be the most importantupgrade made to the entirecar, the stock seat backswere carefully re-contouredto allow them to be fullyreclined with the top downso that a tall guy like Dickcan enjoy the car the way itwas meant to be driven. This modification was soartfully done that you don’teven notice it at first, andwhen you do, it looks like itcame that way from thefactory. So what kind of car doesthis all add up to? I had thepleasure of riding in anddriving Dick’s E-Type lastAugust, and I can tell youthat he’s got a winneron his hands. I’m glad Dickdidn’t take the easy way outby dropping in a small-blockAmerican V-8, and insteadmodified the venerable XKsix to extract its fullpotential. All in all, it’s a carthat preserves that originalE-Type flavor whileenhancing the drivingexperience in almost everyway, not some overdoneresto-mod whose originalcharacter has beencompletely obliterated by anavalanche of moderncomponentry. For example,I’ve seen pictures of anentire XK8 dashboard andcenter console crammedinto an E-Type, andalthough those bits lookgreat in their original setting, they look silly in the earliercar. Thankfully, Dick did notsuccumb to suchfoolishness, and his car isso much the better for it.Of course a car like Dick’smay not be for everyone.First, there’s the expenseinvolved. Even a stockrestoration on a car like theE-Type, done properly, isnot cheap, and adding in allthose special bits andcustom work just drives thetab even higher, whichbrings us to the secondconcern.
