Pipeline 3President’sMessageGreg Semmel, NASPD PresidentAs my term expires I would just like to say“thank you” to everyone who has worked sohard to make the NASPD the “place to be” inthe pipe industry! I don’t think anyone otherthan the Past Presidents can appreciate allthe work, planning, discussions anddevotion that goes into the NASPD.In the past two years we have: Streamlined the NASPD overhead. Gained 51 new members, which brings usto 199 members with 5 pendingapplications. This surpasses our goal of200 members, thanks to the hard work ofour Membership Committee. Conducted two very successful trainingsessions orchestrated by Don Bohach,Bill Buckland, and Gerald Merfish, witha lot of work put in by our presenters. Invested more than one year’s worth ofoverhead expenses in CDs to carry usthrough any rough times ahead. Visited some great new locationsincluding San Diego, New York and LakeTahoe. Witnessed one of the best pipe markets inthe history of the NASPD. Watched China take its position as aleading force in our industry. Dealt with health insurance costescalating out of control. Witnessed more mergers and acquisitionsin our industry than ever before. Seen oil prices jump to over 70 perbarrel, resulting in gas prices over 3.50per gallon. As for the future;Who knows what it will bring:Cars that run on corn?Russia emerging as an oil-producing giant?Susannah having her fourth child? Justkidding! It has been a wild ride. All the members I’vemet in the last two years have beenincredible. Getting to know all thewonderful speakers and presenters was veryeducational.I have cherished being your President for thelast two years. Thank you for theopportunity. I will not, however, missstanding in front of you at the podium andtrying to figure out a way to get us all to turnoff our cell phones.I wish you all a happy and very successfulNew Year.André Crispin is RetiringAndré Crispin, founder and CEOof The Crispin Company, isretiring. As a substantial supporterof NASPD, we recognize hiscontributions by dedicating thisissue in his honor. He servedNASPD as President from 19871989, past member of the Board ofDirectors, Honorary BoardMember and received theKnowles-Rubenstein Award ofExcellence in 2001. The followingis a story of part of his colorful life.“Andre is a kind and generousman whose past reads better than most fictionnovels. He embraces life with enthusiasm andstyle.”André A. Crispin was born on August 23, 1923, inBrussels, to a Belgian career officer, and wassubsequently educated in Brussels and Louvain. In his youth he was very active in the Boy Scouts, where he eventually became regionalcommissioner, a benevolent function in Belgium. In 1940, upon the German invasion and at theinvitation of the Belgian government, hevolunteered in the Belgian army and was shippedto southern France for training. After thearmistice with France and an unsuccessfulattempt to join the allied forces in Great Britain,he was returned to occupied Belgium, where hefinished high school and enteredUniversity. His father was aprisoner of war in Germany. When the German occupyingforces closed the universities in1943, Crispin joined the“Mouvement NationalRoyaliste”, a faction of theBelgian resistance. After the liberation of Belgium in1944, Crispin re-joined theBelgian Army’s 21st Battalion offusiliers, but was tranferredalmost immediately to the Belgian ArmyInterpreters’ Corps and detached to the E1C2group of the 9th U.S. Army. After the Belgian andGerman campaign, upon the implementation ofthe Potsdam agreement and the division ofGermany, his U.S. unit was assigned to theProvincial military government of Land Hesseand its capital city of Kassel.André Crispin was discharged in April of 1946and returned home to his parents. His father, bynow retired from active duty, had taken themanagement of a small non-ferrous foundry inCouvin, a small town near the French border.Encouraged by his American brethren-in-arms,Crispin decided to go to the United States, the jobmarket and prospects in Europe being ratherdismal, and a military career not being promising.(continued on pg. 8- CRISPIN)MARK YOUR CALENDARSDON’T FORGET YOURPASSPORT FOR CANCUNJust a reminder to American citizens. If you do not have a passport, this isthe time to get one.
