It involved counterfeit copies of SKFbearings and the prosecutor demanded that thedefendant’s fine be increased or even changedto imprisonment. Their argument was thatthe copied goods were not only damaging to abrand’s reputation but also exposed customersto increased risks and put lives in danger. Theprosecutor points out that using counterfeitproducts in critical mechanical applications in,for example, the nuclear energy industry, therailway industry and the aircraft industry, isan unwelcome and serious danger. A brand, inthis instance SKF, serves as a guarantee, andcustomers buying that product expect a certainlevel of quality, reliability and durability. Theprosecutor has suggested that the outcomeshould serve as an example in similar cases –when customers unknowingly receive copiesthrough distribution, or third parties and areexposed to huge risks. It is an interesting case tofollow and certainly relevant to anyone sourcingvital mechanical components. And what has Nord-Lock been up to? Wecontinue to concentrate on a bright future. To take part, participants musthave the stamina and endurance to ski long distances at a rapidpace, while also having enough composure and skill to accuratelyshoot small targets from 50 metres.Biathlon can also be demanding for event organisers, withcompetition sites covering large areas in difficult conditions. Also, all of the equipment must be in perfect working order. For over thirty years, Biathlon Target System Kurvinen hasbeen a world-class pioneer in biathlon target and range systemsand has exported its products to over 30 countries. During acompetition, Kurvinen targets will be continuously shot at andCUSTOMER:BIATHLON TARGET SYSTEM KURVINENsubjected to thousands of hits. Yet despite the pressure, theymust maintain their strength as it only takes one faulty target toruin a whole competition. For the past year, Biathlon Target System Kurvinen has beenusing Nord-Lock X-ser ies washers to secure all critical connections on its targets. Previously, the company had been usingthread-locking fluid. However, this did not offer enough flexibilitywhen adjustments to the targets needed to be made, especiallyin cold weather. The X-series washers, on the other hand, can be removedand reapplied quickly and easily, despite freezing conditions. Since most of the steelcomes from recycled scrap metal, which would otherwisebe left to rust and decay, Nucor is also one of the world’slargest recyclers. In order to produce this much steel, Nucor’s minimillsare continuously in operation, melting down and recastingscrap metal. Despite the harsh conditions and extreme temperatures, everything needs to be in perfect working order. When dealing with a commodity as valuable as steel, anydowntime is costly.Currently, Nucor uses Superbolt multi-jackbolt tensionersin two applications on its steel mills, resulting in improvedsafety and reliability, as well as contributing to more ergonomic working environment conditions for its workers.Firstly, Superbolt MJTs are used to secure the rolls to theroll chocks. Compared to torque tightened nuts, applyingthe necessary torque is significantly easier as it can beachieved using standard hand tools, thus eliminating thestrain when assembling and disassembling equipment.Secondly, the tensioners also secure the mill’s stand tothe transport cart used in the production process. Originally, this was secured using hydraulic nuts, which were cumbersome, unreliable and thus a safety hazard for employees. However, since switching to Superbolt MJTs, the connectionto the cart is now safe and reliable.TURNING WATERINTO POWERPRODUCT:HYDROELECTRIC TURBINERUNNER WEIGHT:1,225 KGOUTPUT:5,150 KWCUSTOMER:CANYON HYDROFOR OVER 35 YEARS , Canyon Hydro has beendelivering hydro-electric systems to customersall over the world, and has built up a reputationfor efficient designs, quality components andcomprehensive support throughout the system’slifespan. Put the Nord-Lock experts to the test.Clamp load (kN)New preloadOriginal preloadPrescribedtorqueTorque (Nm)Low deviation in achieved clamp load is essential to obtain control of the clampload and to utilise the full capacity of the bolt. Torque/clamp load test: lubricated condition (blue), dry conditions (orange). Preload levels can vary significantly with the introduction of lubrication. Before lubricating it must be checkedthat the bolts and the clamped parts can withstand the higher load.Effects of lubricationwhen reusing fastenersQ: What happens to preload in thejoint during reuse?A: It is common in many applicationsto reuse the same nuts and bolts aslong as they are in good conditionafter operation. What happens tothe joint preload during reuse is, however, not always considered.During tightening, metal facesbetween male and female threads,as well as between the bolt head/nut and substrate, grind against eachother causing wear to occur. Theresult is higher and more scatteredfriction.Friction scatter is inherent in everybolted joint upon each installationand can be quite large when installing without any lubrication. Whenfasteners are reused and tightenedto a specific torque, more of theapplied torque is required to overcome the friction and less is utilised toobtain the required preload. For eachsubsequent reuse the preload becomes lower and more inaccurate. Thiscan cause issues when the designerhas specified a preload range for theapplication to maintain sufficientclamp force to overcome the external forces on those joints. Finally, the preload may not be sufficient towithstand the working load appliedto the joint, which subsequently fails.By lubricating the fastener beforeevery use, not only can friction be reduced to improve torque-to-load ratio, friction scatter can also be reduced to improve preload accuracy. Thegraph here illustrates the torque-toload behaviour between a dry installation and a lubricated installation. While the preload scatter at a giventorque is quite random, you can influence the variability of that scatterby this simple modification. The prescriptions of the manufacturer regarding lubrication havepriority and must be followed. It maybe necessary to reduce the torqueto avoid damage to the bolt or theclamped parts. HASuperbolt: your flexible friendQ: How does the added flexibility of Superbolt improve thebolted joint?A: In normal bolted joints, thestress concentration of loads onthe first 1-2 threads is one of themain reasons why a bolted jointfails. With a joint utilizing Superbolt multi-jackbolt tensioners, asthe jackbolts are torqued to stretchthe stud/bolt, the tensioner bodyradially flexes in at the top andflexes out at the bottom. This flexing action transfers the load fromthe first few threads and distributes the load evenly throughoutthe entire engaged thread lengthbetween the tensioner and stud/bolt. This simple flexing actiondramatically increases the strengthof the joint by reducing the stressconcentrations on the first coupleof threads. In addition, this radialflexing action combined with axialflexing results in added elasticityin the joint. In a typical boltedjoint, the average clamp length ofthe joint is around 2 to 5 threaddiameters in length. The combined flexing in the MJT creates ahigher load point, which increasesthe clamp length of the joint byas much as 2-3 thread diameters. It can be concluded that theRadialAxial(a)(b)Schematic of
