Assessments are administered in the United States andaround the world to determine students’ English literacylevels. To make comparisons across these assessments,a common metric is needed. Lexile measures serve thispurpose for the Programme for International StudentAssessment (PISA) and its correlation to the TOEFL scalescores and Common European Framework of Reference forLanguages (CEFR) levels. The table below shows how theTOEFL Junior and Primary tests’ scale scores correlate toLexile measures.Lexile MeasureTOEFL Scale Score115750L114CEFR LevelAchieve3000 has fully integrated the only proprietaryassessment, designed in collaboration with MetaMetrics ,to measure students’ Lexile progress monthly. READINGAchieve3000 Accelerates Student Comprehension with Automatic Adjustments andAccurate PlacementAchieve3000 offers the only patented (U.S. Patent #8,714,986) model of digital differentiated instruction that assessesall students to reach them one-on-one at their individual reading levels. As students work through a proprietary 5-StepLiteracy Routine, they improve their reading skills and acquire the academic and cross-disciplinary vocabulary necessaryfor the TOEFL readings that span art, humanities, life science, social studies, physical science, and other areas, as well asmore general topics, such as the workplace, environment, and recreation.Achieve3000’s solutions accelerate comprehension levels using summative and embedded formative assessments. Thesummative assessment, LevelSet, establishes a baseline Lexile measure, which the system uses to match students to theappropriate level of text. LevelSet is administered twice more throughout the year to automatically adjust text complexityaccording to each student’s reading growth. The same grade-specific lesson is differentiated at 12 levels in English,12 levels in English with Spanish supports, and 8 levels in Spanish.AC H I E V E 3 0 0 0 A N D T H E TO E F L FA M I LY O F A SS E SS M E N T S4

Students follow a 5-Step Literacy Routine as they work onAchieve3000 lessons, building the close-reading and notetaking skills needed to comprehend complex text. The thirdstep—the Activity Questions—is an embedded formativeassessment featuring questions similar in format andtype to the TOEFL. The system monitors students' resultsand automatically adjusts their reading levels to makesure they always receive the same lessons as their peersbut at a text complexity that is precisely matched to theirindividual Lexile measures to most effectively build readingskills and foster the acquisition of new vocabulary.LevelSet AssessmentEstablishes baseline Lexilelevel for each studentDifferentiated TextMatches complexity to students’individual Lexile levelsEmbedded AssessmentMeasures comprehension ofinformational text and mastery ofstandards and skillsAdaptive ContentSteps up text complexityas reading improvesACCELERATED LITERACY GAINSRecent data from 2016-2017 reflect this growth, as well.Achieve3000 received an ESSA Evidence Rating of “Strong”for use with middle/high school students from the Centerfor Research and Reform in Education (CRRE) at JohnsHopkins University. The rating is based on a gold-standardindependent research study that found positive, significanteffects on students’ Total Reading scores (effect size of 0.29). Achieve3000 Builds Content-Area Knowledge andVocabulary Through Nonfiction TextsAchieve3000’s focus on nonfiction academic texts in suchareas as world history, world geography, life science, andphysical science reflects an increased need for studentsto acquire grade-level content-area knowledge anddevelop academic- and content area-specific vocabulary. Each lesson identifies academic and content-specificvocabulary for each student’s reading level, includes anaudio dictionary, shows the words in context in the readingpassage, and asks students to use new vocabulary in theirwriting or discussions. Academic vocabulary is essentialfor preparing students for success in school and in theworkplace. Furthermore, students need frequent exposureto academic vocabulary and nonfiction texts to prepare forassessments such as TOEFL that require students to readand comprehend both academic and nonacademic texts. For example, students may encounter academic readingsabout topics like botany or astronomy and nonacademicAchieve3000 Promotes Best Practices forVocabulary AcquisitionTeachers have several direct-instruction lesson plansthat they can use to help students learn how to look forand evaluate context clues, use references, and analyzeword parts. Through direct instruction, teachers introducestudents to these concepts, which are reinforced withcollaborative activities. In each Achieve3000 lesson,Teacher Recommendations are provided to highlightgrade-level academic and cross-disciplinary terms to focuson during instruction.readings in the form of emails or school newspapers.Achieve3000 has more than 15,000 archived lessons withnonfiction content, interactive vocabulary features, andan easy-to-use search tool for finding relevant topics thatmeet the needs of individual programs.and content-specific vocabulary at each level. Studentsbenefit from point-of-use tools, such as definitions andaudio supports. English learners receive extra vocabularysupport and background information with a Vocabularyand Concept Preview and a summary of the article with itsrelated vocabulary words in English and/or Spanish. The independent 5-Step Literacy Routine providesexposure, practice, and assessment with academicAC H I E V E 3 0 0 0 A N D T H E TO E F L FA M I LY O F A SS E SS M E N T S6

Achieve3000 Promotes Best Practices for ReadingComprehension and Close ReadingIn order for students to demonstrate success on any of theTOEFL tests, they must master reading comprehensionstrategies and close-reading skills. Teachers can provideinstruction around a variety of reading comprehensionstrategies that are offered within Achieve3000 beforestudents begin their independent practice. The secondstep of the routine is devoted to the development of theseessential skills. Select articles include two nonfictionreadings: the first page is a contemporary issue, and thesecond page is a Dig Deeper section that provides additionalbackground information and details that make explicitconnections to the content areas of science and socialstudies. More like textbook material, the Dig Deeper sectionhelps students build academic language through lessonsthat explicitly connect to grade-level requirements. Eachstudent receives one of 12 English versions or one of 8Spanish versions of the lesson most closely matched to hisor her specific Lexile measure, ranging from 150L to 1350L,so all students are placed at their appropriate reading levels, including the readers who struggle the most. The Article tab features tools for developing the closereading techniques that are needed for full comprehensionof informational text. The digital highlighting tool allowsstudents to annotate text in a way that helps them gaina better understanding of the information they haveread. The Reading Connections foster the developmentof two key reading strategies: Summarizing, proven tobe the most effective skill in improving comprehension, and Generating Questions, a strategy that fostersindependent reading and research. Setting the Purposeencourages students to find textual evidence to use intheir responses to the Thought Question. The ThoughtQuestion is ideal for TOEFL preparation, as it allowsstudents to see the question prompt prior to reading thearticle so they can proactively read for specific information. The Thought Question also challenges students tosynthesize information from multiple sources, an essentialhigher-order critical-thinking skill. For the greatestcomprehension growth, students should complete at leasttwo Reading Connections per lesson.Teachers are encouraged to then challenge students byhaving them read the Stretch Article, a version of thelesson written at grade-level text complexity. By practicingtheir newly honed strategies and close-reading techniques, students are able to stretch to the comprehension ofgrade-level text and the acquisition of higher-levelvocabulary, which also gives them the confidence tointeract with complex text on the TOEFL tests.Achieve3000 Provides Regular Practice with TOEFL Item TypesThe opportunity to work with text complexity and the types of questions they will encounter on the TOEFL tests is criticalto students’ success. Achieve3000 regularly delivers similar comprehension, vocabulary, and summarization challenges.Below are a few examples of TOEFL items and Achieve3000 items that demonstrate how this repeated practice increasesstudents’ comfort level and confidence.AC H I E V E 3 0 0 0 A N D T H E TO E F L FA M I LY O F A SS E SS M E N T S7

SummarizingThe ability to summarize is a higher-order skill thatdemonstrates true comprehension of materials and isoftentimes challenging for readers. Because this skill isfrequently assessed on the TOEFL tests, it is focused onin Achieve3000’s 5-Step Literacy Routine.TOEFL Sample ItemThe TOEFL tests typically ask students to complete asummary by selecting answer choices that expressthe most important ideas in the passage. Achieve3000is designed to scaffold students toward this task andsupport their independent writing of a summary.Achieve3000 embedded assessment questions includethose that have students identify statements that shouldor should not be included in a summary of the passage. This helps to lay the foundation for understanding themost important ideas in the passage.Achieve3000 Sample ItemIn addition to these assessment items, Achieve3000’s 5-Step Literacy Routine has students focus on summarizing whenusing the Reading Connections and completing a Thought Question. Repeating this reading behavior helps build a keystrategy that will prepare students for the TOEFL tests, as well as for reading across disciplines.AC H I E V E 3 0 0 0 A N D T H E TO E F L FA M I LY O F A SS E SS M E N T S9

Testing in an Online EnvironmentTOEFL Junior can be administered in an online environment, and TOEFL iBT is only offered digitally. Students preparingfor the TOEFL online must read and write digitally, as well as complete technology-enhanced items. Achieve3000 offersregular practice with reading, annotating, highlighting, writing, and taking assessments online. Practice with a varietyof drag-and-drop activities and multi-select questions is a regular component of Achieve3000 grade-specific ChallengeCourses.
