CARBON2019FOOTPRINTREPORT

?WHAT IS ACARBONFOOTPRINTThe carbon footprint is a tool to assess the impact of an organization oractivity on the environment by measuring the amount of greenhousegases – the main contributor to global warming – emitted into theatmosphere each year.At AUC, the three main contributors to greenhouse gas emissionsinclude: heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) and domestichot water; transportation; and electricity for lighting and other equipment(Non-HVAC). Other minor contributors are emissions from refrigerants, paper use, water supply, solid waste disposal, fertilizers and natural gasfor domestic and lab use.The University’s carbon footprint estimates the quantities of greenhousegases emitted into the atmosphere as a result of its operations, suchas providing water and electricity needed for faculty, staff, and studentutilization on campus. The carbon footprint is expressed in Metric Tonsof Carbon Dioxide equivalent (MT CO2e).

LOOKING TO THE FUTUREAUC managed to reduce its carbon footprint by about 4,500 MT CO2e this year. That’s exciting progress, but we stillneed to do more to limit the effects of climate change. pusMessage from the PresidentIn recent decades, climate change has created imminent threats to global health, security, and order. These threatsfrom various climate change impacts, such as sea level rise, increased intensity and frequency of severe weather events, and the loss of entire ecosystems, will only amplify if the atmosphere continues to warm. While many of these impactshave yet to manifest fully, some already disproportionally affect the world’s most susceptible regions. Given its harshclimate, growing population, and limited natural resources, the Middle East and North Africa region is among the mostvulnerable. We at the American University in Cairo recognize that climate change is a global challenge and solving it will requiredecisive global action. We believe that institutions such as AUC have a particular responsibility to catalyze environmentalaction in their communities. This series of Carbon Footprint Reports represents the first attempt in the region to measurea university’s impact on global climate change. The data we have collected and the expertise we have developed enablesus to lessen our environmental impact while simultaneously creating a model for others to measure and address theirown impact.Francis J. RicciardonePresidentThe American University in Cairo

The larger pyramid comprises of the Sustainable Development Goals put forth by the United Nations. The goals aim to move the world towarda more sustainable future through concise and holistic steps of development in various aspects such as poverty, education and environmentalstewardship. The pyramid shape showcases AUC’s commitment to building global initiatives into our sustainability practice. It also representsthe volume of greenhouse gases emitted by AUC in Academic Year 2018 and is roughly four times the volume of the three pyramids in the GizaComplex combined. To learn more about the Office of Sustainability, visitPrinted onrecycled e-campus
