For a smooth transition toyour new career, the right trainingis crucial. Ultimately, it’s abouthow you can enhance your CV,as well as your own knowledge,by adding useful qualifications.Ask yourself how you can setyourself apart from others andbetter direct your career path. Soft skills, such asleadership, teamwork, reliabilityand time management are allhighly valued by employers andyou can enhance your offering byteaming such skills with vocationaltraining to prove that you alsohave practical or commercialknowledge. In some cases, itcan simply be a matter of fillingin the gaps in your knowledgewhich will ease your transitionto a corporate environment. How do I decide whattraining to undertake? If you are considering a specificarea of business, such as projectmanagement, think about whichtraining course will give youboth the additional skills andknowledge you will need, aswell as a recognised professionalqualification. Project Managersgenerally command salaries in theregion of 45-50,000 (average UKsalary) so it’s worth consideringa vocational accreditation whichwill not only prove your existingknowledge and skills, but also giveyou the terminology, processesand techniques to apply themin a commercial environment. Awidely recognised qualification, such as AgilePM , PRINCE2 (newly updated), the APM’sProject Management Qualificationor APMG International’slatest certification, PraxisFramework, which coversproject, programme and portfoliomanagement (great value 3-in1), are all excellent choices. If your future business ormanagement career path ismore general or you are lookingto set up your own business, itmay be preferable to opt for anall-round training course whichwill give you the business skillsyou need in key areas such asbusiness strategy, operations, finance and marketing. Police intoPrivate SectorWe have been supporting policeofficers as they leave policing for oversix years now, having set up Policeinto Private Sector (PiPS) in early 2011.10 Police Resettlement Magazine Winter 2017www.policeresettlement.comWe had all experiencedmoving from theall encompassingenvironment ofpolicing into theprivate sector as a steep learningcurve. Not least because theredid not seem to be anywhere toseek out tried and tested guidanceto meet the needs of the verysingular requirements of policeofficers and indeed police staff. We realised how little help therewas, and so set about offeringall the services we would like tohave used and I am delightedthat Police Resettlement, withtheir outstanding reputation, isnow available to everyone too.LEAVINGClearly if you leave after substantialservice than the resettlement daysare helpful, particularly if you havecommutation to manage, but whatabout if you are outside of that? What if you are leaving without30 years’ service, after 15 or 5years? What if you need to knowthe best way to find the right jobsthat suit your needs? What if youwant to think beyond jobs usingjust your policing skills and wantedto augment them with new skills, new sectors for a fresh start? This magazine is set to helpyou on your journey and we atPiPS are here to help you withthe specifics, from CV’s, careercoaching and interview preparationand everything else along the way.You will need a strong CV thatwill get read and not left in the pileof applications, one that standsout for all the right reasons. Youwill need to ‘sell’ yourself, becauseif you send a poor account ofwhat you are capable of you willundoubtedly be passed over. And when you have that CVwhere will you send it? Where willyou source enough jobs to look atall possibilities? How do you findthe right roles? How do you makecontact with people on the ‘outside’?And once you get to interview youwill need to understand what mightbe different from ‘job’ interviews. How do you get to know what youneed to understand and learn?Oh dear, it is no wonder manypeople feel a real sense of dreadmixed with the excitementof a new adventure.Help is now at hand – but you willneed to reach out and take action.CHALLENGES (ANDSOLUTIONS) FORPOLICE OFFICERSSelling yourselfClearly the culture of “don’t gettoo full of yourself’ has a place inpolicing. Arrogance and smugnessare soon challenged and so onesteps carefully – how horrifying itwould be if anyone thought you were‘showing off’? This is helped by jobspeak – we understand who peopleare by their roles, rank and history. However, out in the private sector ifyou are not able to clearly state thevalue you bring, how will anyoneknow how good you are? There is aneed for you to show what an assetyou can be to employers, they donot have the time to unearth yourskills and general wonderfulness!Make it easy for them to see you.Understand the value you bringand be sure you demonstrate topotential employers the value youcan add to their business. It is foryou to reach out rather than waiting(and waiting . ) for someone tonotice you and snap you up for thejob of your dreams. Think of thesaying – waiting for your boat tocome in and add, yes it will, but Imay have to swim out to meet it.NetworkingA horrifying concept for manypolice officers but don’t worry, Ican take that pain away for you.I have a theory that many yearsCareer Opportunities for serving and retired police officersWHAT WE KNOW AFTERFIVE YEARS IN THE FIELDWorking with many hundreds offormer police officers, includingincreasingly those who arelooking to leave policing early,we understand that althoughthere are barriers to success, once you know what to update, change and modify, they areoften quite manageable. In policing circles, it is almosta proven science that word ofmouth is still the favoured wayof establishing who is worthspeaking to. Which is not a badthing as there are many peoplewho will jump on what seemslike a current trend and end updelivering very little value. Most of the people we haveworked with over the years arerecommended via word of mouth. We have been here for over fiveyears now and continue to getpeople to interview through CV’sthat get read, by understandingboth policing and the privatesector and, of course, in trulyknowing and being passionateabout the value of police officersand what they are able to deliver.spent being on the receivingof requests from others, manyofficers can be less than adept atreaching out and connecting withpeople and asking, appropriately, for support and guidance. So, here are my tips, tried, testedand successful. Get onto LinkedIn ifyou are not there already. Connectwith people you know and includeeveryone you have ever met, wellthe tolerable ones on the right sideof the law perhaps. We have agroup (https://www.linkedin.com/groups/3933192) with over 6,000members who are all former orserving police officers or staff – youprobably know quite a few of themalready. Go and join if you are notalready in there, have a look at theother members and get connecting. From there connect with siblings, cousins and friends outside ofpolicing. You are looking to diversifyand add something new throughpeople already established in othersectors. Then connect with peoplewho you share other LinkedIn groupswith. Groups are a great way tolearn all about the new sectors youare interested in – what are theytalking about? What do the termsthey use mean? Almost by osmosis, you will start to understand newindustries and that will potentiallybe invaluable at interview. And do not forget to get in touchwith past colleagues and indeedbosses who have successfullymoved on. I would suggest thatto make things easier you sayfrom the outset that you are notasking them for a job but can youbuy them a coffee and pick theirbrain on how they did it? Whatproblems did they face? Whatdid they wish they had known? You may have thoughts aboutbeing the only one not working thisout, wondering if you really haveanything to offer and perhaps evenwhether you secure a new role toleave policing or if you will you workagain after retirement. These arecommon reflections and you arenot alone in these thoughts, nor areyou alone in wondering how you willwork out what you need to do. Policeinto Private Sector is invaluable ifyou feel a bit at sea, but you haveto reach out and connect. You arenot supposed to just ‘know’ all this. You have been busy policing andthis is an area of expertise you maynot have needed to visit before –and now with technology, it looksentirely different year on year.IsolationWhen you leave or are thinking ofleaving, policing, even when youhave frankly had enough, there willbe a time of transition, a time whenyou may feel that isolated and missthe better parts of policing. However, you are not alone you just need toconnect and build your new world. You have nothing to proveThe good news is that you nolonger need to present detailedevidence and proof. Say whatyou have done and what youhave achieved as succinctly aspossible, less is certainly more inthis case. You absolutely need tomention achievements and beBeliefs about whowould want youRecently, a client said to me“of course the biggest problemis that people do not want toemploy former police officers”. Iwas astounded – I had not heardcomments like that for so long. This, I would suggest is an urbanmyth that may be used to licencethe less determined, less capableperhaps, to step back. If you arereading this, then that is not, YOU!It is true that some companiesdo not
