Dear Friend:Bethany Hill Place, a true “neighborhood in a building,” serves families and individuals whohave experienced homelessness, addiction, violence, and loss. With just two program staffand a remarkable cohort of volunteers, residents set and achieve their own educational goals, enhance their life skills, and attain emotional and personal growth. This is a place whereneighbors help neighbors, adults help children, and families develop bonds of friendshipand caring. At the heart of our successful model are the guiding values of unity, peaceful resolution ofconflict, and service to others, learned from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston, our founders and Sponsor. We have many examples of what former residents have accomplished, andknow that many are still actively volunteering or ‘giving back’ in their new communities. We dedicate this report to one such former resident, featured in the profile opposite thispage. Duane’s family overcame many difficult circumstances in order for him to become thesuccessful, caring, and engaged person he is today. He and his siblings are living proof of ourguiding values and what can be achieved in our Bethany Hill neighborhood. This year, our work was validated by two standout donations that help raise the bar for Bethany Hill fundraising: a 50,000 gift from an anonymous donor to support programs for ourresidents and a 100,000 commitment from the CummingsFoundation to help with our growing capital needs. Nevertheless, the foundation and core of our fundraising effortsare built upon the critical smaller donations from individuals, private foundations, and companies. Every donation, gratefullyacknowledged in this Annual Report, is genuinely invaluableand directly supports Bethany Hill Place’s mission and values, benefiting current residents and those yet to come.We want to express our gratitude to our many volunteers, donors, in-kind contributors, and Board members who togethercomplete and sustain our wonderful community.Trish Appert and Marianne McLaughlin receiveCummings Foundation grant on behalf ofBethany Hill Place.2016/2017BOARD OF TRUSTEESMarianne McLaughlin, ChairTiffany A. Duane and three of his siblings came to Bethany Hill Placefrom foster care, reuniting with their mother Kathleenand her partner Bill following their release from detox.Duane grew into his teen years at Bethany Hill, in hisown words ‘giving this place a run for its money’by getting into varying degrees of trouble. Heparticularly credits his Mother with makingsure he took responsibility for his actions,as well as the love and support of hisneighbors and Sisters Denise Kellyand Betsy Conway with always beingthere, like family, to guide him backdown the right path. The right pathlead to high school graduation, onetour in Iraq and another in Afghanistan as a combat engineer, andultimately to becoming a Brookline Police Officer. Duane wasrecently married; he and his wifeown their own home in Boston.Duane’s younger sister became anurse and now serves in a clinicin Oklahoma on Native Americanland. One brother is a journeymancarpenter and crew chief, the othera hardworking laborer and newfather. His older sister is a Job CorpsManager.“ Nathanial Hawthorne’s words have never been so true. ‘Families arealways rising and falling in America.’ I credit Bethany Hill, along withothers, for my family’s rise into this world as successful citizens.”— DUANE D.PHOTO: 2017 DAMIANOS PHOTOGRAPHY DAMIANOS PHOTOGRAPHYANNUAL REPORT 2017Annual v6.indd 119/11/17 8:39 AM

The success of the Bethany Hill Place model is our dual focus on work skillsas well as foundational and life skills. We require involvement ineducation and/or training as a condition of residency. Our small staffand large corps of volunteers offer meaningful in-house programsand support to enable residents to meet the requirement and achievetheir goals.Bethany Hill Place is a Sponsored Ministry of theSisters of St. Joseph of Boston.S A V ET H ED A T ESpring Gala 201889 Bethany Road, Framingham, MA 01702www.bethanyhillplace.orgFederal Tax ID: 04-2493492Annual v6.indd 6DESIGN: WWW.CROCKER-DESIGN.COMThursday, May 3rd The Connors Center Dover, MA9/11/17 8:39 AM
