SAFETYIMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATIONTo reduce the risk of propertydamage, serious injury or death, read and follow the precau ons below, all labels on the water heater, andthe safety messages and instruc onsthroughout this manual.RISKS DURINGINSTALLATION ANDMAINTENANCELi ing RiskWARNING! Thewater heater is heavy.Follow these precauons to reduce therisk of property damage, injuries fromli ing or impact injuries from droppingthe water heater. Use at least two people to li thewater heater. Be sure you both have a good gripbefore li ing. Use an appliance dolly or handtruck to move the water heater.Gas PressureWARNING! The gas supply pressuremust not exceed the maximum supplypressure as stated on the waterheater’s data plate. The minimumsupply pressure is for the purpose ofinput adjustment. L.P. gas supplypressure must not exceed 13” watercolumn. Have a qualified person(licensed plumber, gas companypersonnel, or authorized servicetechnician) check for proper L.P. gaspressure. L.P. gas pressures exceeding13” water column can result in seriousinjury or death from explosion or fire.Table 1RISKS DURINGOPERATIONScalding RiskThis water heatercan make water hotenough to cause severe burns instantly, resul ng in severe injury or death. Explosion RiskWARNING! Read the water heater’sdata plate to determine the type ofgas required. Failure to follow theseinstruc ons can result in serious injuryor death from explosion, fire orcarbon monoxide poisoning. Do not connect a natural gas waterheater to an L.P. gas supply. Do not connect an L.P. gas waterheater to a natural gas supply. Use a new CSA approved gassupply line. Install a shut-off valve on the gassupply line. Feel water before bathing orshowering. To reduce the risk of scalding, install Thermosta c Mixing Valves(temperature limi ng valves) ateach point-of-use. These valvesautoma cally mix hot and coldwater to limit the temperature atthe tap. Mixing valves are availablefrom Lowe’s . Follow manufacturer’s instruc ons for installa onand adjustment of the valves. The gas control valve on this waterheater has been factory set to itslowest se ng to reduce the riskof scalding. Higher temperaturesincrease the risk of scalding, buteven at 120 F, hot water can scald. If you choose a higher temperature se ng, Thermosta c MixingValves located at each point-of-useare par cularly important to helpavoid scalding.4 Residen al Standard Gas Water Heater Use and Care GuideTemperatureTime to Producea Serious Burn120 F (49 C)More than 5 minutes125 F (52 C)1½ to 2 minutes130 F (54 C)About 30 seconds135 F (57 C)About 10 seconds140 F (60 C)Less than 5 seconds145 F (63 C)Less than 3 seconds150 F (66 C)About 1½ seconds155 F (68 C)About 1 secondFor informa on about changing thefactory temperature se ng, refer tothe “Adjus ng the Temperature” secon in this manual .Even if you set the water heater’s gascontrol valve to a low se ng, higherwater temperatures may occur in certain circumstances: In some cases, repeated small drawsof water can cause the hot and coldwater in the tank to “stack” in layers. If this happens, the water can be asmuch as thirty degrees ho er thanthe gas control valve se ng. Thistemperature varia on is the resultof your usage pa ern and is not amalfunc on.Water temperature will be ho er ifsomeone adjusted the gas controlvalve to a higher se ng.Problems with the gas control valveor other malfunc ons may result inhigher than expected water temperatures. If the water heater is in a hot environment, the water in the tank canbecome as hot as the surroundingair, regardless of the temperaturese ng.

If the water supplied to the waterheater is pre-heated (for example,by a solar system) the temperaturein the tank may be higher than thewater heater’s temperature se ng.Should overhea ng occur or theburner fail to shut off, turn off themanual gas supply valve to the waterheater and call a qualified person. To reduce the risk of unusually hot water reaching the fixtures in the house, install Thermosta c Mixing Valves ateach point-of-use.If anyone in your home is at par cularrisk of scalding (for example, the elderly, children, or people with disabili es)or if there is a local code or state lawrequiring a certain water temperatureat the hot water tap, these precau onsare par cularly important.According to a na onal standard (ASSE1070) and many local plumbing codes, the water heater’s gas control valveshould not be used as the sole meansto regulate water temperature andavoid scalds.Properly adjusted Thermosta c MixingValves installed at each point-of-use allow you to set the tank temperature toa higher se ng without increasing riskof scalds. A higher temperature se ngallows the tank to provide much morehot water and can help provide properwater temperatures for appliances suchas dishwashers and washing machines.Higher tank temperatures (140 F)also kill bacteria that cause a condion known as “smelly water” and canreduce the levels of bacteria that causewater-borne diseases.Water Contamina on RiskDo not use chemicals that could contaminate the potable water supply. Donot use piping that has been treatedwith chromates, boiler seal, or otherchemicals.Fire RiskThis water heater isequipped with a Flammable Vapor Igni onResistance (FVIR) system.FVIR is designed to reduce the risk offlammable vapor-related fires. FVIRmakes this product more sensi ve toinstalla on errors or improper installaon environments. The FVIR system willnot prevent a possible fire/explosion ifthe igniter is depressed and flammablevapors have accumulated in the combuson chamber with the pilot light off.Do not a empt to light this appliance,or depress the igniter bu on, if yoususpect flammable vapor have accumulated inside or outside the appliance.Immediately call a qualified person toinspect the appliance. Water heaterssubjected to a flammable vapors incident will show a discolora on on theflame arrestor and require replacementof the en re water heater. Improperinstalla on or an inadequate air supplycan also cause the FVIR system to disable the water heater.WARNING! This water heater has arese able thermal switch installed aspart of the FVIR system. Do nota empt to disable or modify thisfeature in any way. Doing so can leadto fire, explosion or excessive andabnormal produc on of carbonmonoxide. To reduce the risk of a fire that couldresult in property damage, or seriousinjury or death: Do not store things that can burneasily such as paper or clothes nextto the water heater.Do not store or use gasoline or otherflammable substances in the vicinityof this or any other appliance. Keep the water heater from becoming wet. Immediately shut the waterheater off and have it inspected by aqualified person if you find that thewiring, thermostat(s) or surrounding insula on have been exposedto water in any way (e.g., leaks fromplumbing, leaks from the waterheater itself can damage propertyand could cause a fire risk). If thewater heater is subjected to floodcondi ons or the thermostat(s) havebeen submerged in water, the en rewater heater must be replaced. Replace the water heater’s viewportif glass is missing or damaged. Repairthe combus on chamber door sealsif damaged.Explosion RiskHigh temperatures andpressures in the waterheater tank can cause an explosion resul ng in property damage, serious injury or death. A new Temperature andPressure (T&P) Relief Valve is includedwith your water heater to reduce riskof explosion by discharging hot water.Addi onal temperature and pressureprotec ve equipment may be requiredby local codes.A na onally recognized tes ng laboratory maintains periodic inspec onof the valve produc on process andcer fies that it meets the requirementsfor Relief Valves for Hot Water SupplySystems, ANSI Z21.22. The T&P ReliefValve’s relief pressure must not exceedthe working pressure ra ng of the water heater as stated on the ra ng plate.Maintain the T&P Relief Valve properly.Follow the maintenance instruc onsprovided by the manufacturer of theT&P Relief Valve (label a ached to T&PRelief Valve). When the installa on iscomplete, check the vent’s dra usingthe instruc ons on pages 23-24.Fire and Explosion Risk if Hot Water isNot Used for Two Weeks or More. Install a fuel gas and carbon monoxide detector in the living areasof your home.CAUTION! Hydrogen gas builds upin a hot water system when it is notused for a long period (two weeks ormore). Hydrogen gas is extremelyflammable. If the hot water systemhas not been used for two weeks ormore, open a hot water faucet forseveral minutes at the kitchen sinkbefore using any electrical appliancesconnected to the hot water system. Ifhydrogen is present there willprobably be an unusual sound such as“air” escaping through the pipe as hotwater begins to flow. Do not smoke orhave an open flame or other igni onsource near the faucet while it isopen. Do not install this water heater ina mobile home or manufacturedhousing. Failure to follow these instrucons can result in serious injuryor death from carbon monoxidepoisoning.Installa on AccessoriesFigure 1 - Gas Water Heater Hook-Up KitBurn RiskThis water heater’s venting system can becomehot enough to burn. Do not touch theven ng system while water heater ison, or un l the water heater is turnedoff and the ven ng allowed to cool.Carbon Monoxide RiskWARNING! This water heateroperates by burning gas. Carbonmonoxide is a colorless, odorless, gasthat is a by-product of burning of fuelssuch as coal, wood, charcoal, oil, kerosene, propane, and natural gas.Breathing excessive and abnormalamounts of carbon monoxide cancause carbon monoxide poisoning, resul ng in serious injury or death. This water heater must be suppliedwith adequate combus on air andmust be properlyvented to theoutdoors.
