More important, the money goes in your pocket and nota subcontractor’s.OlyFlow SealsPrior to 2004, there were no standards for retrofit roof drains. A shop-madedrain of scrap sheet metal with cotton mop strands and mastic might havesufficed. Inevitably, during an intense rainstorm, the retrofit drain-linewould back-up and the “rag” seal would fail causing leaks and damageinside the building and to roof insulation. In the early 1980s, the UFlowSeal, constructed from EPDM, nylon, brass and stainless steel, was created to remedy the application. The UFlow Seal, mechanically activatedwith the UFlow screwdriver, expands the EPDM component of the seal tomake contact with the wall of the existing drain leader, preventing waterback-up damage.Pipe SupportsThe professional roofing contractor has three choices when workingwith rooftop pipe supports: 1) leave existing wood blocks, 2) replacewith new wood blocks, 3) use engineered supports such as the OMGOlyFlow PipeGuard.Replacing the wood blocks is the most common of the three choices. Itis a time-consuming, costly, multi-step approach involving: ordering andhandling lumber, purchasing hardware, setting up to cut and organizelumber, cutting extra roofing material and, installing wood blocks forevery pipe support. It takes additional time to book and to coordinatethe subcontractor’s schedule with yours. The work requires access tothe roof’s underside; this means more time making what may be inconvenient arrangements with your client, the building owner. There is also theliability of having a subcontractor on the roof.In 2004 a national industry standard was approved (ANSI/SPRI RD-1).The standard featured a test protocol to assure a leak-free connectionto existing plumbing. OlyFlow seals exceed this standard.O L Y F L O WReworking an existing strainer dome and clamping ring can take up tothree hours. It involves removing old parts, then reworking and reinstallation. This process is even longer if a rusted part is broken, if re-tapping isnecessary, or if a trip is required for replacement components. And whenthe rework is done you are still left with the same old drain.The performance of the OlyFlow seals was tested by two independentfacilities – Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada and Smith EmeryLaboratories. The results were conclusive. After rigorous leakageperformance tests, there were no seal failures.
