Technical CleanlinessIn many cases, the absence of critical particles isdecisive for the reliable performance and durability ofa technical system. This is why analysis of the cleanlinessof components is of crucial importance.Cleaning Processes Ensure Technical CleanlinessSartorius as a leading supplier of laboratory equipmentoffers filtration and weighing products that meeteven the most demanding requirements of cleanlinessanalysis.Such cleaning processes are performed in sectors of the followingindustries:Following the manufacture of subassemblies and components, particularly for sensitive fluid systems, critical particles areremoved from such components. This is usually done by rinsingor immersing in an ultrasonic bath.Automotive industryAerospace industryPrecision mechanical and medical engineeringTo ensure the cleanliness of subassemblies and components, particulate contamination is analyzed in various steps of thecleaning process:Validation of cleaning methodsIncoming goods inspection and final QCIn-process control and root cause analysisGuidelines and StandardsComponent suppliers and manufacturers often test the technicalcleanliness of parts using internal standard operating proceduresand a number of guidelines and standards, such as the ones listedbelow:ISO 16232 Road vehicles – Cleanliness of componentsof fluid circuitsVDA 19 Part 1 Inspection of Technical CleanlinessISO 18413 Hydraulic fluid power – Cleanlinessof componentsSamples of Damage and Typical Components Tested for CleanlinessBlocked bearingsor hydrodynamic surfacesTurbochargersBlocked valvesPlugged nozzlesor filters Anti-lock brakes Crankshaftbearings Power brakeboosters Dispensingpumps Lubricationcomponents andhydraulic partsCylinder liningsInjectors Fuel feedcomponentsl Component4Short-circuitedelectrical contactsl Particle Controlelectronicsl Liquid, such as fuel or oil

Schematic Workflow of Cleanliness AnalysisInspection of components for cleanliness can be subdivided into the steps of extraction, filtrationand analysis. In the process, all critical particles need to be detected as just a few individualparticles are all it takes to cause a malfunction in a technical system.Extraction of ParticlesTo obtain a sample, a test liquid is used to rinse particlesoff of a test component and to transfer suchcontaminants into this liquid to perform extractionFiltration Filtration of the sample: Prior to filtration, a blank is determined, which represents the degree of contamination of the test systemRinsing to ensure that not a single particle goes undetectedFiltration of a fixing agent (optional)Gravimetric AnalysisDrying of the filters (desiccation)Cooling and equilibration for stable weighing Weighing of the filters with the sample and the blank;the filters are also weighed before filtration todetermine the difference in weightPhoto-Optical AnalysisDetermination of the number of particles, particle size, metallic particle reflection and shape of fibersFurther AnalysisAdditional methods, such as IR, Raman spectroscopy,LIBS or REM EDS, can be used to identify the properties ofa particulate substance5

FiltrationIn cleanliness analysis, filtration of a sample is anessential step. Filters are used in this process to separateparticles from the extraction liquid, and as samplecarriers for gravimetric and photo-optical analysis.Sartorius offers a wide variety of filter materials andpore sizes to cover many different requirements.Selection of a Suitable Analytical FilterChemical CompatibilityCellulose nitrate filters are the No. 1 choice for many applications. If this filter material is notcompatible or has limited compatibility with the test, rinsing or fixing solution, alternative filtermaterials can be considered, such as cellulose acetate or PTFE having different compatibilityproperties.Pore SizeThe pore size of an analytical filter depends on the rated retentive capability of the particle sizes tobe determined. As a rule, these pore sizes are specified in the requirements defined for the cleanlinessof a specific component. For example, in VDA 19, Part 1, the pore sizes for retaining the smallestcritical particles are suggested (see diagram) as a rule of thumb.Filter pore size [µm]25Particle size 50 µm20Pore size (max.) the particle size15 Particle size 50 µmPore size (max.) particle size10505152550100 150 200Smallest particle size to be detected [µm]6toofof the

Gravimetric AnalysisThe gravimetric method is used as a standard procedurefor determining technical cleanliness as it providesinformation on the total particle burden of a component. Our Cubis balances meet the highest requirements onaccuracy and ease of operation for particle massdetermination.Cubis Premium Laboratory BalancesCubis enables you to combine your choice of display and controlunit, weighing module, data interface module and much more.Your can choose from thousands of options to configureyour balance to suit your individual needs and obtain the optimalsolution for integration into your process.Cubis Residual Dirt Analysis Q-AppTo turn your Cubis laboratory balance into a Cubis individualinstrument, download the Residual Dirt Analysis Q-App into yourbalance (order no. YAPP10). This app ensures gravimetricdetermination of particles in compliance with VDA19.Selection of an Optimal BalanceTwo criteria are important for selecting a balance in line with the recommendationsof VDA 19 or ISO 16232:Maximum allowable particle load on a componentMaximum allowable blank value (10% of the maximum allowable particle load)The blank is determined at the beginning before extraction of particles flushed from a componentand indicates the basic particulate contamination of the test setup and the liquids used.Your NeedsMax. IIR filters are digital filters with infinite impulse response. Unlike FIR filters, they have the feedback (a recursive part of a filter) and are known as recursive digital filters. Figure 2 Block diagrams of FIR and IIR filters For this reason IIR filters have much better frequency response than FIR filters of the same order. Unlike FIR .

domain to obtain a digital filter that meets the specifications. The commonly used analog filters are 1. Butterworth filters - no ripples at all, 2. Chebychev filters - ripples in the passband OR in the stopband, and 3. Elliptical filters - ripples in BOTH the pass and stop bands. The design of these filters are well documented in the literature.

According to ASTM E562-08 [8] a manual point-count on 30 evenly distributed fields with a 100-point-layer each on a Olympus BX60M with a JVC TK-C181 Color-video-camera, using the Piscara 9.4-software was conducted, from which the porosity could be calculated. adhesion (glue and braze testing) According to ASTM C633 [9] a tensile-strength-test on glued and brazed coatings with a surface .
