2019 IPPS-SR Tour Description2019 IPPS-SR Tour DescriptionSunday Tour (Acadiana)Tuesday Tour (Florida Parishes)Gerald Foret Wholesale NurseryGerald Foret founded Gerald Foret Wholesale Nursery with a red tin shed, sevenacres, and a John Deere tractor in 1979. The nursery started as a field growing operation but now is primarily container production. The nursery takes advantage ofthe climate of south Louisiana granting a 10 month growing season. Exceptional appearance and structure are the goals of tree growing at the nursery. Recently, tennew acres have been added to expand the production of 30 gallon trees.Live Oak GardensLive Oak Gardens, Ltd. was founded by Mike Richard, Sr. in 1973 and is a wholesalenursery located at Jefferson Island. A wide selection of premium quality plants fromflats of ground cover to large field grown trees. Among our specialties are manyvarieties of bamboo and palms. We also supply ferns, grasses, perennials, tropicalfruit, shrubs, tropical plants. Live Oak Gardens survived the salt mine collapse at LakePeigneur in 1980.Rip Van Winkle GardensRip Van Winkle Gardens is a beautiful 15-acre semi-tropical garden locatedadjacent to Live Oak Gardens. It all started in 1870 when the famous actor, JosephJefferson, decided to build the home just after the Civil War. Afterwards, the Baylessfamily bought the home and property, first opening the salt mine, then opening thegardens to the public as well as the mansion. As time went by, many things changedat the gardens, such as the lake got very large because of a disaster of 1980, andall that is left of a house is a chimney of a 3 story home, in the lake. Semi-tropicalgardens and 350 year old live oaks highlight the gardens, along with the JosephJefferson Mansion.Mcllhenny CompanyTABASCO brand products are made by McIlhenny Company, founded by EdmundMcIlhenny in 1868 on Avery Island, Louisiana. It was here that he developed therecipe for TABASCO Original Red Pepper Sauce that’s been passed down fromgeneration to generation. To this day, the company is still family-owned and operated on that very same island. The original Tabasco pepper is still used today andhas been maintained in production at McIlhenny since the companies origins.Jungle GardensExperience the natural beauty and tranquility of Jungle Gardens - a 170-acre semitropical garden that stretches along Bayou Petite Anse on Avery Island. Naturalists, bird watchers and visitors from around the world will enjoy the gently rolling landscape, botanical treasures and abundant wildlife. Attractions range from beautifulflowers to birds to Buddha (a magnificent centuries-old statue on the grounds). Inseason, visitors can see azaleas, camellias and colorful bamboo - as well as alligators, deer and the thousands of snowy egrets that nest there. Bird City precededJungle Gardens. Started by Edward Avery “Ned” McIlhenny (the son of the inventorof Tabasco hot sauce), Bird City started in 1895 with Jungle Gardens beginning in the1920s. Jungle Gardens is a nature lover’s dream.Register at: https://form.jotform.com/91326494360155LSU AgCenter Hammond Research Station – Research and Extensionfor Louisiana’s Green IndustryEstablished in 1922 and located in the fast growing region north of Lake Pontchartrain, the Hammond Research Station is equidistant from the major populationcenters of Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Jenkins Farm and Nursery is over 175 acres.Starting as a field grown nursery, in 1974 a small container yard was installed. Then in 1977 Margie took a LSU class on native plants and the rest is history. Thefocus of Margie’s efforts is the cultivation of rare, unusual and native plants forthe landscape trade, with a special interest in native azaleas. She is nationallyknown as a long-time authority and breeder of azaleas and other native plants.Bracy’s NurseryBracy’s was founded 33 years ago on 2 simple premises: Grow great plants forpeople who know plants and treat customers better than family. Early-Career SR-IPPS Professional Exchange ProgramIn 2013, the SR-IPPS began to participate inthe Early-Career Propagator Exchange programwith the European (GBI) Region. This is an outreach program to attract and educate early career nursery/ green industry professionals. The goalwas to interchange young nursery/ green industryprofessionals between international regions – andgive an early career professional the opportunityto learn about the industry/ profession in anotherworld region of the IPPS. The SR-IPPS awardee iscurrently hosted by the European Region – visitingregional nurseries and attending their annual conference. The international pays 2,000 for travel &expenses on a rotating basis. In alternate years theSR-IPPS contributes 2,000 towards the awardeestravel (plane, other travel expenses), plus somereimbursement to help the local SR hosts coversome of their travel expenses in hosting the professional from the European region in their visit toUS green industry. The SR-IPPS Board of Directors,in consultation with the membership, solicits andselects potential candidates.Vivian Munday SR-IPPS Young HorticulturalProfessional Scholarship Work ProgramThis program was begun in 1997, as the Vivian Munday Undergraduate Awards program - inmemory of Dr. Vivian Munday, Professor of Horticulture, University of Georgia.
