ShepardThanks be to God forever.Ever notice how the color of the altar linens (paraments) on the altarand the pulpit change during the year? Each particular season of theliturgical year is reflected in those colors. The colors:White: the color of light. It stands for purity, victory and joy. It is usedfor Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Day, Epiphany, Baptism of ourLord, Easter Sunday, and all the Sundays after Easter leading up toPentecost; Ascension Day; and Trinity Sunday. May also be used onReformation Day (or red).Gold: refers to worth, virtue and theglory of God. Gold is used for Christthe King Sunday, and may be used forTrinity Sunday, and weddings. Mayalso be used for Easter to celebratethe Resurrection of Christ.Black: seen from Lent to GoodFriday and Holy Saturday. Used ondays when celebrating the passion ofJesus Christ. May be used on AshWednesday. Represents repentance, mourning and somber reflection.Used as an alternative to stripping thealtar on Maundy Thursday.Purple: symbolizes the majesty ofChrist. Has been traditionally used by the Methodist church during theseasons of Lent and Advent.Blue: also the color of royalty. It is now being used during Advent(replacing purple) in many Methodist churches. It is hoped that havingblue for Advent and purple for Lent will distinguish the two seasons fromeach other. Lent being a season of repentance, and Advent being a morehopeful and joyful time. RECORD BROKEN WITH 762 PAIRS OF SOCKS DELIVEREDFirst, some socks facts: (thanks to Susan Bennett, Lebanon Children'sHome Public Relations Manager)The socks last all year.Every child gets socks for Christmas. Many times when children leave the facility,we send a couple of bags of socks home with them.We typically serve 125 children on a yearly basis, and you can imagine how quickly we go through socks!Luckily, there isn't an expiration date on socksand we can keep them nice and tidy for years to come. Our social workers never have to shop for socksthanks to Buck Creek UMC!The week after sock delivery we had two new children come in andthey each received two bags of socks. They came with NOTHING!So all those socks you donated this year will go to good use! 762 pairsis a record. Our previous record was 650 pairs in 2007. The nine yeartotal: 4,304 pairs.Socks were delivered to theLebanon Children's Home onSaturday, December 12th, 2009,by Nancy Schnepp, Marie Plessand Diane White. Among the762 pairs of very nice socks, were20 pairs of Christmas socks. These were put into a separatelittle Christmas bag and presentedso they may be used for theseason. When you look at thepictures of the four large redplastic gift bags which are allfilled with socks, you can see thatthose 20 pairs of Christmas sockswould be lost otherwise.Donations started coming inearly this year, before we even"advertised"! By September 21, you had already donated 229 pairs. Youare all very generous this year, and we of Ladies Missionary Society sendyou a great big THANK YOU! Special thanks to Wanda Martin who tookit upon herself to go to every CVS in the area, including Delphi, to7purchase socks on sale. Thanks to Nancy Balser for delivering those socksto BCUMC.Thanks to the out-of-staters Max & Mary Ellen Davidson (Florida) andRussell & Arlene Lohrman (Arizona) for donations to purchase socks. Also thanks to Maralyn Turner, Lynn & Dianna Mason, Retta Whiteaker, and Gini & Ron Tull for monetary donations. (It was fun shopping for thesocks!) Thanks to each and every one of you that donated socks. Youknow who you are! Hope I didn't forget anyone. A big thank you also toJim Davidson Jr. who loaded the four bags of socks up for us into the van.Diane, SockMonkey,Marie,Nancy S.We had a safe journey down to Lebanon, a quick 45 minutes. When wearrived at the Home, Diane went inside to secure some help for unloadingthe socks. We pulled around to the back door and two gentlemen (MikeMay, Senior Recreation Leader, and Tom Hoffman, Recreation Leader)came out to unload and carry in the socks. They thanked us and blessedus. Then we made our usual stop at Arni’s in Lebanon. It was neat thatthe couple in the booth behind us said a prayer before they ate. (So didwe.)The trip back to Buck Creek took a little longer, as traffic was full ofsemis and very heavy. On the bright side, the weather was decent, with noprecipitation happening! God was with us on our journey coming and8

going. He wantedto make sure thosesocks made it toLebanon, and thatwe made it homesafely.INFANT BAPTISMGod Blessyou, everyone of yousock givers!NEW RAILING INSTALLED.at the upstairs entrance, thanks to John Metro & BillMiller (pictured), and Pastor Dwight!9AbbigailMorganFleming was baptized onSunday, December 13,2009, in the sight of God,family, friendsandchurch family. HANGING OF THE GREENSOn the first Sunday of Advent, November 29th, several people gatheredafter worship services to do a little hanging of the greens. Garland washung, greens appeared on thewindow ledges, and wreathswith red bows appeared on thedoors. Some Christmas lightswent up around the front of thesanctuary, framingtheChristmas tree which had beenassembledanddecorated.Decorations were made by theSunday School classes. PamChurch's class (Age 3 - K)made a paper chain of red &green. Jamie Stratton's class(1st - 5th) cut out white papersnowflakes.Jim & AnitaDavidson's class (Junior/SeniorHigh) strung a long chain ofpopcorn and cranberries for thetree. The Adult Class (leader: Ralph Rohrer) using Mindy Jester's idea fora "cloud of memories", copied and cut out photos of loved ones that have1314

passed away, and affixed them tovarious colors and shapes ofconstruction paper, and added aribbon for hanging. There werealso pictures used of past pastors, and pictures associated with thedonors of two of the church'sstained glass windows (Eckhart &Pattee). There aremany of the churchfamily and the love given. You asked for one, but I have two, and manymore. The many Christmas programs memorizing a poem, (sometimesthey were quite long), and then Santa would appear, he would hand outour gifts we brought along with an apple or orange and of course a bag ofcandy. It was always the Sunday evening before Christmas, it taught us tobe Leaders and learn the meaning of Christmas along with giving gifts oflove. The other is the Sunday before Memorial Day. We would line upoutside the Church, carry flags and a bouquet of flowers, and march overto the cemetery and place the flags and flowers on the graves. This taughtus to remember our forefathers and why we celebrate Memorial Day,singing patriotic songs was a memorable thing.1516

When did we see you astranger and invite you in or needing clothes and clothe you?
