Cultivating Gifts for Your ChurchEvery church hopes to offer such inspiringworship, thoughtful education, and engagingmission outreach that an outpouring of financialgifts will spontaneously flow from every memberof the congregation. Sometimes this happens.More typically, however, we all need a little help inmaking the direct connections between ministry, money, discipleship and giving—particularly whenit comes to forming lasting commitments andshaping long-term behavior. The Foundation can help you and your churchdo a better job of making these connections—bothsowing the seeds and nurturing the harvest with . Consultation with your boards and committees Free brochures on various gift topics Free workshops on basic estate planning &ways to give Free consultations with individual donors Help creating an endowment program Free material for newsletters Help investing and administering long-termfunds and endowmentsJericoSpringsUnitedMethodistChurch16 Missouri United Methodist FoundationMake sure your congregation is aware of, andunderstands how easy it is to: Give a gift of appreciated stock Create a gift annuity Give a percentage of an IRA Name the church as a beneficiary of a lifeinsurance policy Make a gift through a will or trust Create an endowment for a favorite ministry Create a Donor Advised FundAnd the list can go on to include gifts of land, farm products (crops or livestock), a retainedlife estate on one’s home, a charitable remaindertrust or charitable lead trust. Suffice it to saythat a check in the offering plate is not the onlyway to give!Contact the Foundation at any time just toask a question, request information or toarrange a personal visit.Call 800-332-8238 or visit the website atwww.mumf.org.

Why Should I Consider a Donor Advised Fund? Most of us do not think of ourselves as “donors.” Mr. Gates and Mr. Buffett are donors. The rest of us are simply “givers.” We give what we can, when we can.Whatever the word, a Donor Advised Fund (or Giver Advised Fund – if you prefer!) can bea handy way to do your giving – especially if you have a number of charitable interests andare looking for a way to organize your giving over several years. The DAF becomes your charitable fund at the Foundation. You make gifts to your fund atany time. You can decide later, however, which charities you want to recommend to receivedistributions from your fund. In the meantime, the fund is invested along with all the otherFoundation funds. This can be a great way to simplify and even expand your giving. For instance, you canmake tax-deductible gifts to your fund whenever it is convenient or cost-effective. If yourfund grows to a significant size, it can become a very rewarding activity to consider howand where the annual charitable “grants” will do the most good. Indeed, you can involvethe whole family and pass on important values in the process. To begin your DAF requires a gift of at least 10,000 in value. (Gifts of cash, stock, orother property can be given.) After it is set up, gifts of any size can be added at any time.To discuss how a DAF can be tailored to meet your particular goals, just call David Atkins at the Foundation at 800-332-8238.Stock and Mutual Fund GiftsA gift of appreciated marketable securities is a wonderful – and cost-effective – wayto make a gift to your church or another favorite charity. The Foundation makes iteasy – with simple instructions and fast processing. For example, Mary decides to complete her pledge to the Wesley UM Church thisyear with a gift of 100 shares of appreciated ABC Corporation stock that is held inher brokerage account. She simply completes the simple transfer form (availablefrom the Foundation), gives it to her broker and faxes a copy to the Foundation. Thebroker transfers the stock electronically to the Foundation account. The Foundationliquidates the stock (cost is usually less than 10), sends a gift receipt letter to Mary, and sends the proceeds check and a full accounting to the Wesley UMC.It is that easy. This is a service provide by the Foundation for all Missouri UMchurches and related ministries. (The only cost is the liquidation fee. There are noaddition costs or fees added by the Foundation.)In 2011 the Foundation processed 54 separate gifts of stock with a total value of 372,286.Information, including the transfer form, is available on the Foundation website(www.mumf.org), or call us at 800-332-8238 and we will be happy to assist you.2011 Annual Review 17

The remainder value of the trust benefits the church orcharity(ies) you designate. For maximum tax advantage, a CRT is usually funded with highly appreciated property that has avalue over 50,000. The Foundation will serve as trustee for any CRT that substantially benefitsone or more United Methodist charities. As trustee, the Foundation oversees investment of thetrust, payment of income and preparation of annual tax reporting information. Consider funding a CRT with highly appreciated real estate. The trustee sells the property andreinvests the full proceeds (no capital gains tax due). The result can be a generous tax deduction, avoidance of capital gain tax, and the creation of a new income stream. Consider making a testamentary gift of a portion of your IRA into a CRT. This can save taxes, generate an income for loved ones, and make a meaningful gift. The wealth replacement trust arrangement. Fund a CRT with highly appreciated assets. Createa second trust that purchases a life insurance policy on you with a death benefit similar to theamount placed in the CRT. Use the CRT income to fund the life insurance premium paymentsin the second trust. The beneficiaries of the second trust are your children. Properly structured, the result is a charitable gift and the tax-free transfer of a similar amount to your heirs. You must have your own attorney create your CRT. The Foundation can be a sourceof information and assistance for you and your professional legal counsel. Please contact us at 800-332-8238.18 Missouri United Methodist Foundation
