PUMPING TABLEAfter numerous pumping tests against other makes of mills, the founders, Sidney Williams & Co, were so confident about the superiority ofthe Comet that in 1934 they published a challenge, which has never been accepted over 125 years. The challenge was:‘Install a Comet and any other standard mill of the same size adjacent to it so that both mills work under identical pumping and windconditions and if, after a period of three months trial, the Comet does not pump at least 25% more water we will remove it at no cost to you.’The pumping capacities of Comet Mills, shown in the Table, are based on the number of pumping strokes (total inches) in 19 k.m.p.h winds basedon 10 hours of pumping allowing for slip/friction. However, the pump sizes and elevations are such that with balanced pump rods and freepressure sealing devices the mills will start pumping in light breezes of under 8 m.p.h. The pump sizes, elevations and capacitiesin this Table would be greater if they were based on the mills starting in stronger winds, as are generally the tables forother mills. The reason is that the starting torque of the wheel varies roughly as the square of wind speed; thus a 14m.p.h (22 k.m.p.h) wind should develop four times as much torque as a 7 m.p.h (11 k.m.p.h) breeze. Also, the higher daily capacities stated in other tables are obviously calculated on stronger winds of longerduration and shorter distances. The wind conditions for the Comet Table are more usual and therefore preferable. The notes on The Selection Guide should be read before making use of the Comet Pumping Table. The Comet Pumping Table is aGuide only.Australia's Leading WindmillPage 4

SELECTION GUIDEParticulars Required For Design & InstallationINSTRUCTIONSIt is very important that you provide asmuch information as possible andsupply accurate measurements so thatthe most efficient and least expensivepumping plant can be recommended tosuit your requirements.First choose the diagram that is mostsimilar to your proposed site andpumping conditions. Answer thegeneral data questions with accuratemeasurements and include pumpingdetails. If you need a Mill Head onlythen refer to pages overleaf on CometMill Heads on Southern Cross Towers/3-Post Towers.Photocopy this page to record yourdetails and measurements.Winds—The Winds, especially thelight breezes, must have free accessto the mill from all directions. Thebottom of the wheel must be at least15ft (14 metres) above all windobstructions within 150yds (137metres) of the mill. Comet pumpingcapacities are based on averagemedium winds of 12 to 14 m.p.h (19–22 k.m.p.h) blowing for 10 hours daily.Elevations—The mill should beloaded and balanced so that it willstart pumping in light breezes. Its sizedepends upon the size of the pumpand total elevation. The latter includesnot only the vertical heights for suctionand delivery elevations but also anallowance for probable water flowfriction in pipeline. The delivery pipesize should be at least half the pumpdiameter.Suction—In a bore or well it is best tosubmerge the pump. For a creek ordam the pump should be placed closeto the water and the suction elevationmust not exceed 22ft (7m), or less ifthe suction pipeline is long.Australia's Leading WindmillPage 6

The advantage of a Syphon Pump is thatits barrel and bottom valve are immersed in water within the body casting, which has thesuction inlet in the side near its top. PUMP PARTSPACKING TUBESWhy COMET Windmills Are More Suitable For The Use of Packing TubesComets' direct acting windmills have a distinct advantage over geared windmills by means of uniqueadjustable weights on the wheel arms to counter-balance the upthrust of the working parts and rods. This isnot possible for geared mills as they require 4-7 turns for each pump stroke. This is the reason why CometWindmills are suited to the packing tube principle and are known as 'Australia's Leading Mill'.Sizes: 1¼" - 2"PACKING ½1¾1¾22⅝⅝¾¾⅞⅞11300 - 12400 - 16300 - 12400 - 16300 - 12400 - 16300 - 12400 - 16PRICEex GSTMinimumPipe 44COM1145COM114640 - 1½"40 - 1½"50 - 2"50 - 2"65 - 2½"65 - 2½"80 - 3"80 - 3" 280.00295.00345.00395.00385.00390.00420.00460.00 230.00256.00276.00TO SUIT SX SYPHON PUMPSPACKING TUBE ADAPTORSCODEPacking ColumnTube IDPipeCOM11471¼1½COM11481½2COM1149Packing TubePlunger:1¾2½Quality made plunger assembly, double pinned coupling withtwo inverted cup leathers providing a reliable water seal.Prices quoted are exclusive of GST and Freight.Prices quoted are exclusive of GST and FreightAustralia's Leading WindmillPage 11

WINDMILL OVERHAUL PACKAGES'C' PATTERN MILLS ·coMETWINDMILL PRODUCTSSIZES: 8, 10, 12, 14 footSUPERIOR 'C' PATTERN FEATURES· iiifflDrive ShaftThe Comet 'C' Pattern Mills have earned a wide reputation for great pumpingcapacity and longer trouble-free service. Extreme sensitivity to changes in winddirection, together with effective governing for safety in storms, means simply that theComet will out perform any other mill of similar size. Made in five (5) sizes the 6 to14ft Comet Mills are direct acting for better efficiency and great strength. The fewerworking parts mean less friction loss than geared mills. The Comet makes more use ofthe small power available in the prevalent light winds. The exceptionally strong main casting with integral mastpipe is accurately machined to closetolerances. The unique Comet Hardwood Bearing Bushes make by far the best bearings for theslow speed, heavy duty work of a windmill and a great many of them have been in service forover 30 years. The cast iron crank with steel pin is shrunk and keyed to the bright steel driving shaft andcannot work loose. Thrust is taken between machined faces of the main casting and wheel hub.;,::::r,; IGENUINE OVERHAUL PACKAGESC PATTERN MAJOR OVERHAUL KITPRICE adMAB1000MCD1000Swivel8FT Major Overhaul Packages1 OFT Major Overhaul Packages 1,3901,39012FT Major Overhaul Packages14FT Major Overhaul Packages 1,8501,850 8601,1908-1 OFT Minor Overhaul Packages12-14FT Minor Overhaul PackagesRepair Kits B-14ftNEWMA810348-10 Upper/lower Turntables completeMCD103412-14 Upper/lower Turntables completeMAB10358-10 Inner/Outer Pullout Collars completeMCD103512-14 Inner/Outer Pullout Collars completeMA810368-10 Roller Guide completeMCD103612-14 Roller Guide completeGuide RollersDraw Bar 690750390480390450:'""'H" . . . . . ,,.,,.,.,.,,. ,,.,,,.,.,,. !
