2018 Media Award for OutstandingCoverage of Family IssuesNina Martin for her body of work onAbout CCFThe Council on Contemporary Families is a nonprofit, non-partisan organization dedicated toproviding the press and public with the latestresearch and best-practice findings about Americanfamilies. Our members include demographers, economists, family therapists, historians, politicalscientists, psychologists, social workers, sociologists,as well as other family social scientists andpractitioners.Founded in 1996 and based at the University ofIllinois at Chicago, the Council’s mission is to enhancethe national understanding of how and whycontemporary families are changing, what needs andchallenges they face, and how these needs can bestbe met. To fulfill that mission, the Council holdsannual conferences, open to the public, and issuesperiodic briefing papers and fact sheets, whichjournalists can sign up to receive by writing toStephanie Coontz, Director of Research and PublicEducation, at coontzs@msn.com.CCF Media AwardsThe CCF Media Awards were established in 2002 aspart of the Council’s commitment to enhancing thepublic understanding of trends in American familylife.“All too often, changes in U.S. family patterns arepainted in stark, better-or-worse terms that ignorethe complex realities of family life today. The AwardsCommittee looked for work that put individual familyissues in larger social context. This kind of coverageoffers the public a balanced picture of the trade-offs,strengths and weaknesses in many different familyarrangements and structures,” explained StephanieCoontz, CCF’s Director of Research and PublicEducation.abortion, pregnancy, and maternal health.Ms. Martin has a long history of reporting onthese issues since beginning with ProPublicain 2013, including at least 45 articles, nearly half ofwhich were published in 2016 and 2017. Her pieceentitled “Nothing Protects Black Women From Dying inPregnancy and Childbirth” is a particularly salientexample of the outstanding quality of her work. Thisarticle expertly marries the personal and specific to thenational and typical, drawing the reader into the story ofone woman while drawing attention to the oftenoverlooked plight of the whole. Another high-impactpiece, "The Last Person You'd Expect to Die in Childbirth,"combines careful reporting on the staggering details of avital issue - the U.S.'s shockingly poor record ofpreventing maternal mortality - with the powerful detailsof a heartrending story that serve to make the abstractvery concrete and real, and piercing.CCF Pamela Smock AwardCouncil on Contemporary Families member PamelaSmock has donated a biennial award for travel to aCCF conference for an early career scholar to presentwork broadly related to the conference theme. ThisPamela Smock Award is open to graduate students, and scholars up to five years after the terminaldegree.
