Its purpose was the cultivationof fraternity, comradeship, and patriotism among Union Veterans. The G.A.R. also exercised a political role and during the late19th century was able to wield considerable influence in state andnational politics. The G.A.R. sprang up in Illinois in 1866 and spread rapidlythroughout the country. The plan of organization provided forindividual posts at the local or precinct level.Countyorganizations were called districts. At the state level, theorganizations were known as Departments, e.g. Department ofNebraska. All post meetings, district meetings, and nationalencampments were designed to promote the growth of the order, toprotect and assist disabled soldiers and their families, and toengender appreciation of service to the United States throughmoral, social, and political activity. The first post in Nebraska was chartered at the organizationof the National G.A.R. in April of 1866 at Omaha, Nebraska.Nebraska was constituted a provisional department on July 10,1867, but when no reports were received at the nationalheadquarters, the state was dropped from the rolls. In 1874, aprovisional Department commander was appointed. At the firstannual encampment of the Department of Nebraska held at Omaha,June 12, 1877,the Department became a permanent part of the G.A.R.organization. There were twelve local posts were in the state atthat time.A total of 356 posts were organized in the state,1866-1908. With the passing of the union veterans came the demiseof the G.A.R. By 1940 only a few posts remained, and in 1944 thelast regular encampment of the Department of Nebraska was held inLincoln with only one member present. The last civil war veteranin Nebraska, Michael Bondoll of Beatrice, died on December 24,1948.
