A gem of a truck for contractor and driver. A truckthat we, as DAF, are exceptionally proud of. Because it sets new standards. In thefields of quality, efficiency and transport performance. In interior design, comfort, ergonomics and driving characteristics. We are proud that we can offer the market such a fantastic new truck. We arealso proud of the fact that we have so many dedicated experts, with whom wehave realised the XF105, within our organisation. And I am not only talking aboutour colleagues in the development departments or about the product plannersin Marketing, but also about the employees of numerous support services, ofPurchasing and of Production, from production engineers to the skilled people onthe production lines. Suppliers have also played an important role; many of themwere involved in the development of the XF105 at a very early stage. However, at DAF, product development starts, traditionally, with our customers. They provide us with valuable information from daily practice. By carefullyincorporating their ideas and wishes into a programme of requirements, DAF iscapable of developing, time and time again, products that exactly fit market needs. The new XF105 is the latest proof of this. Our customers also play an important rolein the test phase. Besides extensive test programmes in our test centres, on ourtest track complex and on the road, our development programmes are invariablyconcluded with a field test by customers, to be sure that the highest possiblequality is delivered right from the very start. Therefore, during the past year, thenew XF105 was extensively tested in daily practice by just under thirty hauliers invarious European countries. With the presentation of such a fantastic product as the new DAF XF105, it is onlyfitting to express our thanks and gratitude to everyone who has contributed to itsdevelopment. Our own employees, our suppliers and their employees and, last butnot least, all those customers and drivers who directly or indirectly co-operated inthe development of the DAF XF105. Only through the passion, effort and quality ofall these people can we live up to our new slogan: driven by quality.ColophonDAF in action is a publicationof DAF Trucks N.V.Edited by: Corporate CommunicationsdepartmentP.O. DAF in the newDAF Frankfurt commences operationsDAF is constantly working on further expanding its dealer network in Europe.A recent example of this is DAF Frankfurt GmbH, which was established during thesecond quarter of 2005. Just like the dealer companies in Prague, at London Heathrowand in Budapest, DAF Frankfurt GmbH is 100% group owned.Sales activities are at present still taking place in a temporary building, but constructionof a modern, new facility started recently on a piece of land of over 16,000 m², which isstrategically located alongside the important A661 motorway. The building will have asurface area of 2,757 m², of which 1,764 m² is destined for the ultra modern workshop withseven entrances. In addition, a 29 metre car and truck wash has been allowed for, fittedwith a high-pressure cleaning system. The waiting area for clients and drivers, which will have showers, toilets, vending machinesfor drinks, TV and data connections, etc., will provide a view over the workshop. Naturally, all due care and attention is being paid to the environment. Various floors are being fittedwith a 6 millimetre thick liquid-tight covering to prevent harmful substances entering thegroundwater. The opening of the new building is planned for the second quarter of 2006.50 CFs for Borusan LogisticsAt DAF Trucks in Eindhoven the first ten CF85 trucks from a series of fifty were transferred to the Turkish company Borusan Logistics in the middle of June. The vehicleswere handed over to Borusan drivers by DAF employees and DAF’s Turkish partner,Tirsan.Borusan Logistics forms part of Borusan Holding, the parent company of no fewer than22 subsidiaries, where a total of more than 3,500 people work. Borusan Holding’s four mainactivities consist of steel, technology, car importing and logistics. Borusan Logistics wasfounded in 1973, in the first instance to provide logistics support to the associated companies, but later on also for external partners. Borusan chose DAF because of the favourableprice-performance relationship, the CF85’s low own weight and the high residual value.D A FINA C T I O N4DAF successfulin South AfricaIn October 2002 DAF entered the SouthAfrican market with ambitious aims. Now, over two and a half years later, expectations prove to have been fullysubstantiated: DAF is the fastest growingtruck brand in the South African truckmarket; the market share in the segmentabove 15 tonnes GVW has now reached10%.This success is due, in no small measure,to the partnership with Tyco Trucks whorecently delivered the 1,000th truck inSouth Africa. Tyco Trucks is DAF’s importerand has its own assembly facilities. Thecompany assembles the CF and XF typesfor the South African market based onSemi-Knocked-Down (SKD) packages. AnSKD package consists of entire components such as cabs, engines and rear axlesand an entirely bare chassis. In addition tothe CF and the XF, DAF’s LF is becomingincreasingly popular in South Africa. DAFsupplies this type as a complete vehicle. The 1000th DAF in South Africa (a 4x2 DAF CF85)will be used as a special demo vehicle for TycoTrucks.

The new vehicles replace twoDAF ladder trucks. The Eindhoven Fire Brigade chose DAFonce again after an extensive evaluation. This took place after the DAF FAN CF75had emerged from the required Europeanprocurement procedure as the best vehicle. The steered trailing rear axle thereby provides significant manoeuvrability and a highpayload. The new hydraulic platforms havea maximum vertical operating height of 34metres and a maximum horizontal reachof almost 25 metres. The vehicles are notonly used for fire extinguishing operations, but also for rescue operations. A remotecontrolled water cannon with a capacity of2,500 litres of water per minute is fittedonto the basket. The high engine outputof 265 kW (360 hp) appealed to the firebrigade in Eindhoven because with this, the hydraulic platform, of over twenty-fivetonnes in weight, can reach a speed of80 km/h in 33 seconds.DAF and UBN Auto recently signed a partnership contract in the Bulgarian capital ofSofia. UBN Auto, which has already beenDAF’s service partner in the Bulgarian market for ten years, is now also responsible forimporting DAF trucks.Although the market in Bulgaria for newtrucks over 6 tonnes GVW is still relativelysmall, only 700 trucks were sold in 2004,the country has excellent future prospects. In 2008 a total market of 4,000 trucks isexpected and when Bulgaria enters theEU in 2007 the economy will be given anadditional boost. Bulgaria is an importanttransit country, a good reason for DAF andUBN Auto to pay a great deal of attentionto ensuring that the service network is staffed in the best possible way. To this end,UBN Auto has concluded a partnership withdealer companies in Plovdiv, Burgas andVarna.DAF dealer Warschau Truck Centerrecently delivered a XF.95FTM 8x4 tractorwith a steered leading rear axle to ZREKatowice. The 530 hp-strong tractor isthe first of this type on the Polish market.ZRE Katowice, which was set up in 1955,specialises in heavy and exceptional loadtransport. The XF will be used for transportswith a maximum GVW up to 120 tonnes.ZRE selected the XF due to its excellentperformance and the fact that the truckspecifications meet its needs exactly. Thefavourable experiences of other heavytransport companies using DAF’s XF - inparticular with regard to low operatingcosts - played an important role inpurchasing the XF.100-tonne refuelling tankerAirline KLM recently started using a special combination: a DAF CF75 with a kerosenesemi-trailer with an 80,000 litre capacity. The maximum permissible towable weight of thecombination is 100 tonnes and the total length is more than twenty metres. In order to havesufficient traction under all conditions, the DAF 75.310 tractor has a 26 tonne double-drivetandem axle. The truck has a 9.2 litre engine of 310 hp, coupled to a fully automatic fivespeed gearbox. The semi-trailer’s steering is switched off when manoeuvring backwards,so that driving backwards becomes easier. To operate the refuelling system, an entire liftingplatform has been built at the back of the tank that can reach a height of 4.2 metres. Therefuelling truck combination was developed by DAF dealer Truckland Schiphol in partnershipwith DAF Trucks Nederland and Kar Kunz Aviation Refuelling.5D A FI NA C T I O N

New top model with state-of-the-art PACCAR MX engine:XF105 sets newstandardsDAF has launched the new XF105. This new flagship model, an additionto the DAF programme, features a restyled exterior, a completely newinterior design, a new chassis layout and the new 12.9 litre PACCAR MXengine, available in both the Euro 4 as well as the Euro 5 specification.DAF’s XF105, which will go into production during the first quarterof 2006, sets new standards for quality, efficiency and transportperformance, as well as in interior design, comfort, ergonomicsand driving features.

Trend-setting durability and reliability, thelowest possible operational costs and maximum transport performance and efficiency, combined with Euro 4 and Euro 5 emissionvalues, were the most important criteriabehind the development of the DAF XF105,together with superior comfort and a perfectworking environment for the driver. In orderto distinguish the new top model from theXF95 Euro 3, the XF105 has a restyledexterior, for which the point of departurewas: evolution instead of revolution. DAF’sown Design Centre gave the XF105 itsrefreshingly individual character, whileretaining the striking stylistic elements of thesuccessful XF95. The entirely new SuperSpace Cab roof provides, along with the newtop and bottom grille that continues throughinto the newly designed steel bumper, aquality that is robust as well as friendly. TheXenon headlamps with clear Lexan glassthat can be supplied as additional features, the cat’s eye combi lamps in the bumper andthe integrated spotlights in the Super SpaceCab roof are characteristic stylistic featuresof the XF105.New standard in interior designThe XF95 had already set new standards ininterior space and design. With the XF105,DAF once again takes a leading position inthe industry with regard to ergonomics andinterior styling, materials and colours used, space and its use, finish and overall quality. From the new door panels with stylishupholstery and further increased storagespace, to the new instruments panel, thenew dashboard layout or the new sleepingcompartment, DAF’s new top model offerstop quality in every detail. When taking the seat behind the newsteering wheel with optional airbag, itimmediately becomes apparent thatcomfort, safety and ease of use were giventhe highest priority during the developmentphase. The new steering wheel is availablewith integrated switches for operatingcruise control, downhill speed control, telephone, etc. Other important functions, including those of the AS-Tronic gearbox, are easy to use via stalks on the steeringcolumn. The handbrake control is nowintegrated in the dashboard. This makes iteasier to reach, whilst also providing morespace on the cab floor. In the dashboard, which has beendeveloped like a cockpit around the driver, are three DIN slots, so that, aside from anaudio system, a large navigation ortelematics system screen can be fitted. Allfour electrically-adjustable mirrors and theelectrically-operated door window on thedriver as well as the co-driver’s side areoperated from a central panel on the door.Semi-level floorIn addition to the fact that the XF105 offersthe best possible working environment, thecab is also a home-from-home for thedriver, stylish and well co-ordinated. Thestylish materials and colours that have beencarefully selected to match each other, andthe interior lighting, chosen with care andwith amber coloured night lighting, providea calm and efficient working environment. The engine tunnel has been lowered to15 centimetres in order to achieve a semilevel floor. This has made it easy to passthrough the cab and has resulted in agenerous standing height, both in theSpace Cab (1.75 m) as well as in the SuperSpace Cab (2.10 m). If the truck is fittedwith the automated AS-Tronic gearbox, the cab floor is entirely empty, providingthe maximum mount of living space. Theversions with manual transmissions havea retractable gear lever, which means thatdrivers can move through the cab unobstructed. The lowered engine tunnel has made evenmore spacious storage options under thebed possible. Here DAF offers the choicebetween a fixed storage option or one ortwo storage drawers. It is possible to installa 45 litre fridge in one of these storagedrawers, in which even large bottles canbe placed upright. In addition, to the rightbehind the driver’s seat, a bottle holder hasbeen placed that can easily be reached. The newly designed sleeping area underlines the attention that DAF has traditionallygiven to drivers’ requirements, and providestwo generous bunks. The bottom bunk hasa length of 210 cm and a width of 81 cm,whilst the mattress, which is in one piece,is 15 cm thick. The top bunk, reached viaa handsomely-styled and ergonomicallyshaped aluminium ladder, has generousdimensions (205 x 70 x 10 cm).PACCAR MX engineThe XF105 is equipped with the new12.9 litre PACCAR MX engine, developedand produced at DAF Trucks in Eindhoven.Initially, the engine will be available withoutputs of 300 kW (410 hp), 340 kW (460 hp)and 375 kW (510 hp), with torques of 2,000,2,300 and 2,500 Nm respectively, availableover a broad speed range of 1,000 to1,500 rpm. At a later stage a 410 kW(560 hp) version will be available. The sixcylinder in-line engine combines excellentperformance and flexibility with favourablefuel consumption. Reliability and durabilitywere other important aspects behind thedevelopment of the MX engine, developedfor a design life of 1.6 million kilometres. The PACCAR MX engine distinguishesitself by a combination of tried and tested,state-of-the-art technologies and a number of technical innovations, as well as theuse of hi-tech materials such as CompactGraphite Iron (CGI), and maximum functionintegration. For example, in the design ofthe engine block and the cylinder head, piping has been integrated to keep theengine as uncluttered as possible on theoutside and to minimise the number of9D A FI NA C T I O N

engine parts. Even the SMART high-pressure fuel-injection system is fully integratedinto the engine block. Further innovativetechnical details are the Poly-V belt drivefor the alternator and air conditioning, thecomposite valve cover with integratedcrankcase ventilation, the timing gear atthe rear of the engine, the steel pistons, thecombined steering pump/fuel supply pumpand the aluminium flywheel housing. The new Jacobs decompression brakedoubles the engine brake’s performance, especially in the most commonly usedspeed range between 1,000 and 1,500 rpm.To meet the Euro 4 and 5 emission requirements, the DAF XF105 will be equippedwith an SCR DeNOx catalytic convertercomponents to the inside of the chassis, extra space has become available for largefuel tanks. This has led, along with the carefully considered placement of the DeNOxinstallation and the 50 or 75 litre AdBluetank, to the ability to use a tank capacity upto 1,500 litres, the legally permitted maximum in Europe. The XF105 is fitted, just likethe XF95, with electronically controlled discbrakes, while systems such as ABS, ASR,Vehicle Stability Control and Brake Assistmean additional safety and comfort fordrivers.New chassis layoutBy moving the air reservoirs and otherXF95 for Euro 3Due to the significantly higher prices ofEuro 4 and Euro 5 engines, and becausemarket demand for these trucks will dependto a large extent on incentives and road taxbenefits, such as for the German road toll,DAF expects drivers in countries wherethere are no, or scarcely any, incentives, tocontinue to purchase Euro 3 vehicles for aslong as possible. That is why DAF Truckswill continue to supply the XF95 in Euro 3specification so long there is a demand forit in the European market and in countriesoutside the EU where the Euro 4/5 legislationdoes not apply.D A FINA C T I O N10

Bart van Lotringen, DAF Design Center:“Comfort and optimum use of space”“The aim for the interior design of the XF105cab was clear”, says Bart van Lotringen,Design Director at DAF: “Comfort and optimum use of space without any concessions. An example: For some of our competitors, the bunk can be converted into a bench. This would appear to be a clever idea, but itmeans that the mattress has to be divided. That is non-negotiable at DAF. A one-piecemattress is much more comfortable and sothat is the one drivers will be given. Theladder to get up to the top bunk is sturdyand solid. It can simply be moved out of theway to the foot end, so that it is never in theway if the driver wants to sit or lie down onthe bottom bunk. These examples illustrate that we have fullyimagined ourselves in a driver’s life. Hespends many hours in his cab. Not only towork, but also to live. We have created ahomely atmosphere with warm colours andsoft materials with a natural appearance.Just like modern home interiors.”Optimum space for moving around inAll switches and instruments that aredirectly to do with driving have been placedimmediately around, or even on, the steeringwheel, to ensure optimum ergonomicswhen driving and maximum freedom ofmovement when resting. When combinedwith the semi-level cab floor it leads to optimum movement space for the driver. Bartmentions another such example: “The topbunk of the XF105 can be lifted up in twoseconds using a clever easy-lift system sothat the driver can comfortably sit uprighton the bottom bunk. He can also hang uphis towel to dry on the easy-lift system.”The semi-level cab floor has – in additionto the extra living space – another benefit:because the floor is 15 centimetres higherin the middle than in front of the chairs, theso-called dirty zones are separated fromt

DAF is constantly working on further expanding its dealer network in Europe. A recent example of this is DAF Frankfurt GmbH, which was established during the second quarter of 2005. Just like the dealer companies in Prague, at London Heathrow and in Budapest, DAF Frankfurt GmbH is 100% group owned.
