INTRODUCTION3—IntroductionThe Fisher Pierce series capacitor controllers arethe next generation in smart controllers designedto provide a low cost, reliable method of switchingpole-mounted capacitors. The capacitor controllerrange comes in two basic configurations — the5400 and the 5500.The 5400 is a stand-alone controller that switchescapacitor banks automatically based on networkconditions. The 5500 has the same standardfeatures as the 5400 but with the addition ofcommunication modules for remote control. Both are designed for easy setup, configurationand monitoring through either the large front panelLCD screen and keypad, or by using the suppliedPC software. The controllers include a range of control modes, including remote, automatic and manual control, designed to offer customers true value throughsmarter management of their electrical systemsand reliable integration with SmartGrid systems.4-line backlit LCD screenUSB PC comms portSwitch/controllerstatus LEDManual open andclose buttonsAuto/manualtoggle buttonMenu navigation keypadUnit information plateTest pointmeasurement plugsSwitch fuse housing

F E AT U R E S5—Features—01 Example of monitortab on 5500 controllerutility softwareModes of operationThe Fisher Pierce series controllers can beused either as manually controlled devices orautomatically controlled devices that switchthe capacitors on/off based on a wide rangeof standard control modes. The 5400 and 5500 series controllers have all thesame standard features except the 5500 has theaddition of communication modules for remotecontrol and monitoring. The following automatic control modes areavailable as standard on all controllers:– Schedule (time)– Voltage– Temperature– Var*– Current*Log data is downloaded as a .CSV file, allowingthe user to control, analyze and transport theinformation in programs such as Microsoft Excel .PC utility softwareThe Fisher Pierce series controllers use a standardUSB connection to communicate directly with a PCor laptop, while also supporting communication viaFisher Pierce CapLink. The software provides anintuitive, user-friendly interface, which allows rapidprogramming and deployment of Fisher Pierceseries controller units. Configuration files can becreated and saved for future unit download, furtherreducing the time taken to deploy multiple units. The software is designed so that no file extractionis required for it to run, allowing the software tobe stored and operated on a portable device. Thisallows greater flexibility for operating in the field.*requires a current sensor to be installedAllowing great flexibility, any combination ofthree of the above control modes can be used inconjunction, with the hierarchy of control beingselected by the user. The threshold values andtime-outs for each control parameter are fullyprogrammable by the user, either through theunit faceplate or the supplied PC utility software.Real-time status and measured values are updatedevery second and are displayed on the monitor tab.Where schedule switching is required, the FisherPierce series controllers support both a singleschedule as well as different schedules for summerand winter. Separate schedules for weekdays (workdays) and weekends (non-work days) are supportedalong with the ability to select which days are workand non-work days. Holidays and daylight savingtime are also supported.Data loggingThe Fisher Pierce series controllers have internalstorage for 10,000 data log entries. The data log isuseful for troubleshooting and load profiling. A datalog entry is made upon all controller events such asswitch open or close, threshold values beingexceeded or alarms triggered. Data log entriescan also be programmed to be recorded atpredetermined time intervals from 30 secondsto every hour. The data log is stored in non-volatile flash memory, with the oldest log entries being overwrittencyclically when storage is full.—01

6F I S H E R P I E R C E S E R I E S C A PA C I T O R C O N T R O L L E R S—CommunicationWith the increasing requirement for smart grids and the need for flexibleswitching options, the Fisher Pierce series controllers come fully equippedfor modern communication.DNP3.0For remote control and monitoring, the FisherPierce series 5500 controller utilizes the DNP3.0protocol. For full flexibility, this includes polledand unsolicited responses, support for up toclass 3 polling, and DNP3.0 time synchronization.Using analog output points, the auto switchmode programmable parameters can also beremotely configured. For transmitting remote data, the Fisher Pierceseries 5500 controller supports both RS232 andEthernet (TCP or UDP) communication ports. Thisallows a wide range of modem/radio devices tobe used, while also allowing the 5500 to interfacewith existing communications infrastructure. In case there is a problem with the communicationsystem (i.e. master station is down, communicationtower failure), the 5500 has a configurabletime-out period that returns the unit to localautomatic mode until the communication linkhas been restored. The controller also allows remote monitoringand recording while the unit is in local automaticcontrol mode.Fisher Pierce CapLinkGiven that the majority of capacitor controllersare mounted in an elevated position in the field,a physical connection between the controllerand a laptop can be an undesirable proposition.Optional on the 5400 and 5500, Fisher PierceCapLink allows the user the full connectionfunctionality of the standard USB connection overa secure short-range wireless link up to 150 feet. This allows field technicians to communicate withthe Fisher Pierce series controllers from the groundor service vehicle, resulting in much safer operationof the controller regardless of weather conditions.
