Candidates who havepassed these rigorous exams demonstrate the following:»»»»Professional In Human Resources (PHR): this exam is designedfor HR professionals whose primary responsibilities areoperational rather than strategic. Their focus is on HRprogram implementation rather than creation and theirfunction is primarily within the HR department ratherthan organization wide.Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR): this examis designed for HR professionals whose primaryresponsibilities involve designing and planning HRpolicies and practices. Their decisions have an impactboth within HR and throughout the organization.»»Global Professional In Human Resources (GPHR): this examis designed for HR professionals with HR managementresponsibilities in more than one country. They developand implement HR strategies dealing with global mobilityand multinational operations.»»PHR-CA and SPHR-CA: these exams are designed for HRprofessionals with job responsibilities in the state ofCalifornia. Applicants must have a current PHR or SPHRto qualify (see www.hrci.org for more information).The exam focuses on California employment laws andpractices and does not test knowledge already coveredin the PHR or SPHR exam.Each exam measures a candidate’s mastery of a specificHR body of knowledge. The exams are completely voluntary, although someorganizations or employers may have policies thatencourage their employees to earn certification.
