The provisions of this document do not constitute a contract betweenthe student and the BSN program.BACCALAURATE PROGRAM CURRICULUM FRAMEWORKBaccalaureate (BSN) EducationThe faculty believe there are diverse pathways toward the achievement of the BSN degree. TheBSN faculty are committed to preparing students at the pre-licensure level. The purposes of theBaccalaureate Program in nursing are to:1. Prepare professional nurses who are generalists, and2. Provide the knowledge base for graduate study in nursingThe BSN curriculum is based on the philosophical beliefs of the faculty. The curriculumintegrates knowledge from the biological, behavioral, and physical and social sciences andliberal arts to provide a foundation for professional nursing practice. Learning experiences occurin a variety of health care settings and progress from basic to complex activities to achieveprogram outcomes.Organizing FrameworkThe BSN program curricula content upholds the nursing profession’s standards of practice.These standards are based on The Essentials of Baccalaureate Education for ProfessionalNursing Practice of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN, 2008), Code ofEthics for Nurses with Interpretation Statements (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2015),Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice (3rd Edition, American Nurses Association [ANA],2015), Guide to Nursing’s Social Policy Statement (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2015),and Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN), (American Association of Colleges ofNursing [AACN], 2011).5

Brief History of the BSN Program at WKUIn 1988, the faculty of the Department of Nursing identified the need to develop and implement atraditional BSN program. The traditional BSN program admitted 40 students once a year.However, due to the high level of student demand for the program, the program began admitting40 students each semester in Spring 2006. In Fall 2012, due to continued high demand for BSNprepared nurses, the program received approval to double in size and admit 80 students eachsemester. The BSN program relocated from the main campus to the new WKU Health SciencesComplex in Fall 2013. In Fall 2017, the program expanded to admit 120 students each semesterto meet the growing demand for BSN graduates.BSN Program – Program Outcomes1. Apply knowledge from the behavioral, biological, physical and social sciences, andthe liberal arts to provide holistic patient-centered care.2. Use the nursing process and quality improvement to provide professional nursing careto promote the health and wellness of culturally diverse patients across the lifespan in avariety of settings.3. The BSN Program meets the educational requirements for Registered Nurse (RN)licensure in all 50 of the United States. Once licensed in any state within the U.S., the applicantmay choose to apply for licensure in any other state. This process requires application to theapplicable state and payment of licensure fees to the new state. Students must pass both the class and clinical portion of each linked clinicalnursing course simultaneously in order to progress in the program. If one part isnot passed, both parts must be repeated.
