talkHappy Fall!Greening Up Rhode Island!Recently Rhode Island DOT undertook a simultaneousbridge removal and construction project on thebusy Route 95 corridor running through downtownPawtucket, RI. The plan involved shifting southboundtraffic to the old northbound lanes and constructinga new northbound bridge and removal of the oldsouthbound bridge. Because the bridge carriestraffic over the Blackstone River, the project hadmany environmental concerns. As the construction iswrapping up, MON Landscaping of North Dartmouth,Massachusetts, was hired for all of the erosion andsediment controls on the project. The abutting slopesneeded to be permanently stabilized, especiallythrough the winter months. North American Green P300was the product of choice for this job.Bernardo, working with Team EJP Lincoln, RI, salesmanJason Normandin, was very happy with the results andthe installation which took three MON employees onlyone day to install! North American Green representativeJoe Koziell visited the site recently and was verypleased with the work performed by MON.MON Landscaping is a 30 year old, family-ownedlandscaping and construction company. MON wasfounded by Mario Nogueira in April of 1982. Since thenthe business has passed to two other generations of thefamily, Joao Sousa, Mr. Nogueira’s son-in-law, and nowthe business is in the hands of Mr. Nogueira’s grandsonsFernando and Mario Sousa. Project manager PaulStormceptor System at Somerset-Berkley Regional High SchoolMike Rand, the site Super for KR Rezendes Inc., fromAssonet, MA, installed a 170’x93’ Stormceptor System atthe new Somerset-Berkley Regional High School. Therewere three hundred fifty MC-4500 Stormtech chamberssupplied by EJP Brockton and used with 30” header pipeinlet and 30” outlet header with a stone envelope. Sixounce fabric layers were also used along with a 30-milliner.During the installation Rob Lemire and Jeanie Barrett fromADS and Team EJP Brockton worked with K. R. RezendesInc., and the installation went off without a hitch.Page 2

Erosion Control Field Day Held in Richmond, MaineTom Dubois of Main-Land Development Consultantsprovided examples of sound job site practices, andTeam EJP’s Pete Hanrahan’s presentation focused on theimportance of education and new technology development. On July 17, 2013, Team EJP worked with the Maine RuralWater Association, Main-Land Development Consultants, and the Northeast Chapter of the International ErosionControl Association to produce an Erosion Control FieldDay. The event was held at Maine Rural Water Associationheadquarters in Richmond, Maine.Session goals included networking opportunities, regulatoryupdates, and the introduction of new technology and bestmanagement practices. The workshop opened with a classroom session. SteveTibbetts of the Maine Department of Transportationsummarized his department’s erosion and sedimentcontrol policies and practices. Bill LaFlamme of the MaineDepartment of Environmental Protection discussed hisagency’s role in education and policy implementation. After a mid-morning break, program participants broke upinto small groups and rotated through seven 30-minutefield stations. Each station featured product demonstrationsand live interaction with manufacturers’ representatives, product specialists, and consultants. Three of the sevenstations were manned by Team EJP members. William Terry, inside marketing representative for the Maine Division, discussed hydraulic mulches and soil amendments. JoeHersom, outside marketing representative for the MaineDivision, demonstrated erosion control blankets and turfreinforcement mats. Team EJP’s Pete Hanrahan providedan overview on cellular soil confinement, load support, andporous paving technology. All field day attendees were treated to hot breakfastsandwiches provided by Stormwater USA, a nationalprovider of on-line stormwater compliance training. Abarbecue lunch was also served.Participants included consulting engineers, public officials, landscape contractors, general contractors and public utilityrepresentatives.Town of OtterbeinThe Town of Otterbein, Indiana, recently made a majoroverhaul of their water utilities infrastructure by upgradingto Sensus’ FlexNet system. This came to be through aseries of council meetings, where the town weighed theirold metering methods against the FlexNet’s modernapproach. Otterbein was experiencing large losses inrevenue prior to this time, and FlexNet was able to alleviatethis problem significantly by providing a system that notonly monitors minor and major fluctuations in water flowbut also leaves meter readings to the system, freeing uputilities personnel for less mundane work.Team EJP Lafayette: Charlie Barker and Team EJP AMR SpecialistDavid York, Mid-West.Back row left to right: Roy Ellrich (town manager),Jonah JohnsonFront row left to right: Treeva Sarles (clerk/treasurer),Betsy Jones (billing clerk), Mary Fultz (assistant clerk)Lorean Johnston (meter reader-absent from photo)Page 3

talkRoute 140, East Windsor, CT, Road RehabilitationHeavy rains swept through the Pioneer Valley during thesecond week of June causing damage to a large portion ofRT 140 in East Windsor, CT. Poor drainage, weak soils, andflooding caused significant surface cracking to the road inwhat seemed to be a sinkhole-like formation in progress. Thedamage forced the Connecticut Department of Transportation(CTDOT) to close this portion of road, redirecting 10,000to 15,000 motorists per day to smaller and slower byways. The CTDOT contracted Lane Construction with the task ofdemolishing the existing road and reconstructing a new roadwhile battling poor drainage and soft soil conditions.England weather demonstrates. The same day that LaneConstruction contacted the EJP Vernon Division, EJP utilizedthree surrounding locations to supply 17 rolls of TensarTX5 TriAx geogrid to the job site. TriAx geogrid is made ofpolypropylene triangular geometry network of quarter-inchor larger openings (apertures) that provides stabilizationof aggregate layers or reinforcement of MSE structures byallowing interlocking of soils, rock, or similar material. The TX5was installed in several layers within the sub-base material, interlocking the aggregate thereby creating a snowshoe effectover the soft native soils. To overcome the soft soils of the Scantic River Watershedsurrounding RT 140, the CTDOT and Lane Constructioncontacted EJP to provide a product to strengthen thesubgrade, thereby providing a stable foundation to buildthe new roadway to exceed the harsh conditions that NewWithin 11 days of starting the project, Lane Constructioncleared the damaged road, built a stable subbase with theuse of Tensar geogrid and completed the project in time toreopen RT 140 to allow traffic for the annual East Windsor Fair.CollapseExcavationGeogrid InstallationFinished RoadMethuen Construction Powers Up Lewiston / AuburnMethuen Construction was tasked with constructing a brandnew Anaerobic Digestion Facility at the existing Lewiston/Auburn Water Pollution Control Facility. The purpose of thefacility is to produce bio-gas from the digesters that would inturn be piped to holding tanks. The gas can then be releasedfrom the tanks into a gas conditioning system so that it canthen be used to dry the sludge. Additionally, the gasses will beused to power two 230kw cogeneration engines that will thenpower that portion of the plant. This process is also notable forreducing solids by 30 to 40 percent. The photos (right) are of the digester equipment building. Thisbuilding serves as the heart of the operation, transferring theblending sludge through the flange pipe provided by QWP tothe appropriate holding tanks on the site. For ease ofinstallation Methuen was able to produce a 3-D model fromwhich they were able to produce ISO drawings for use at thesite. The installation of piping and equipment went very wellas the Methuen and QWP teams worked well together. SteveGoldsmith from QWP worked closely with Sheldon Moulton,Page 4the project superintendent, and Jay Spooner, the projectmanager, to make sure that the critical timing of the projectstayed on track.CDM/Smith was the engineer on the project and had led theteam of Dan Murphy, Kelly Saikkonen, Tom Joyce, and JoelIrish working with the LAWPCA trio of Mac Richardson, TravisPeaslee, and Dave Madsen.A ribbon cutting ceremony September 9th proved to be agreat day for Lewiston /Auburn and Methuen Constructioncelebrating a true team effort.
