TOOLS, SUPPLIES AND REQUIRED EQUIPMENTYour model comes with a set of specialty metric tools. You’ll need to purchase other items, available from your hobby dealer, to operateand maintain your model.SUPPLIED TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT1.5mm “L” wrench2.0mm “T” wrenchREQUIRED EQUIPMENT(sold separately)2.5mm ball driver wrench4-way wrench8 AA alkalinebatteries6-cell 2/3A NiMH batteryNiMH battery chargerBody clipsWARNING: Lithium Polymer (LiPo) packs should not be used with the XL-2.5 speed control. The XL-2.5 speed control is not equipped with low-voltage detection.DECORATING YOUR MODELAPPLYING THE DECALSTIRE GLUINGThe main decals for your modelhave been applied at the factory. The decals are printed on selfadhesive clear mylar and are diecut for easy removal. Use a hobbyknife to lift the corner of a decaland lift it from the backing. Toapply the decals, place one enddown, hold the other end up, andgradually smooth the decal downwith your finger as you go. Thiswill prevent air bubbles. Placingboth ends of the decal down andthen trying to smooth it out willresult in air pockets. The factory tires on your model are already glued to the rims. Thetires must be glued to the rims to prevent the rims from spinning insidethe tires. The instructions here are provided to show you how to gluereplacement tires to the rims in the future. Use CA tire glue availablefrom your local hobby dealer. You can glue the tires without removingthe wheels from the model. For clarity, these instructions show theprocess with the wheels removed.1. Remove a wheel from the model usingthe larger (7mm) end of the universalwrench.2. Use your thumb to push the side of thetire away from the rim. Place one or twodrops of CA glue into the opening andrelease the tire. Capillary action will drawthe glue around the bead of the tire.3. Repeat step two at four or five points around the rim, until the tireis completely secured to the rim. Turn the rim over and repeat theprocess for the inside of the rim/tire. Repeat for the other three wheels.4. Reinstall the wheels, make sure none of the axle pins have fallen outfrom behind the hex hubs.Look at the photos on the box fortypical decal placement. For more information onbatteries, see Use the RightBatteries on page 11.Recommended EquipmentThese items are not requiredfor the operation of yourmodel, but are a good idea toinclude in any R/C toolbox: Safety glasses Thin, hobby-qualitycyanoacrylate instant tireglue (CA glue) Hobby knife Side cutters and/or needlenose pliers Philips screwdriver Soldering iron91/16 E-REVO 5

THE TRAXXAS TQ RADIO SYSTEMRADIO SYSTEM TERMINOLOGYPlease take a moment to familiarize yourself with these radio and power systemterms. They will be used throughout this manual.BEC (Battery Eliminator Circuit) - The BEC can either be in the receiver orin the ESC. This circuit allows the receiver and servos to be powered bythe main battery pack in an electric model. This eliminates the need tocarry a separate pack of 4 AA batteries to power the radio equipment.Channel - The 27 MHzfrequency band isdivided into 6 channelsso that up to six modelscan be operatedsimultaneously. Eachchannel is referred toby its flag color andchannel number, asshown on the chart to the right.Clearing your frequency - A routine, verbal check to make sure nobodyelse in your area is operating on the same channel. Always clear yourfrequency by calling out your channel number before operating yourmodel. Wait or move to another area if your channel is already beingused.Crystal (X-tal) - The plug-in device that determines which channel theradio system will operate on. For each channel, there are two crystals, one for the receiver and one for the transmitter. Of those two crystals, the one marked with the lower number (.455 MHz lower) must beinserted into the receiver.mAh – Abbreviation for milliamp hour. A measure of the capacity of thebattery pack. The higher the number, the longer the battery will lastbetween recharges.Neutral position - The standing position that the servos seek when thetransmitter controls are at the neutral setting.NiCad - Abbreviation for nickel-cadmium. The original rechargeable hobbypack, NiCad batteries have very high current handling, high capacity, and can last up to 1000 charging cycles. Good charging procedures arerequired to reduce the possibility of developing a “memory” effect andshortened run times.NiMH - Abbreviation for nickel-metal hydride. Rechargeable NiMHbatteries offer high current handling, and much greater resistance to the“memory” effect. NiMH batteries generally allow higher capacity thanNiCad batteries. They can last up to 500 charge cycles. A peak chargerdesigned for NiMH batteries is required for optimal performance.Receiver - The radio unit inside your model that receives signals from thetransmitter and relays them to the servos.Resistance - In an electrical sense, resistance is a measure of how anobject resists or obstructs the flow of current through it. When flowis constricted, energy is converted to heat and is lost. Traxxas powersystems are optimized to reduce electrical resistance and the resultingpower-robbing heat.Servo - Small motor unit in your model that operates thesteering mechanism.Transmitter - The hand-held radio unit that sends throttle and steeringinstructions to your model.Current - Current is a measure of power flow through the electronics, usually measured in amps. If you look at wire like a garden hose, currentis a measure of how much water is flowing through the hose.Trim - The fine-tuning adjustment of the neutral position of the servos, made by adjusting the throttle and steering trim sliders on the face ofthe transmitter.ESC (Electronic Speed Control) - An electronic speed control is theelectronic motor control inside the model. Electronic speed controlsuse power more efficiently than mechanical speed controls so that thebattery runs longer. An electronic speed control also has circuitry thatprevents loss of steering and throttle control as the battery loses itscharge.Thermal Shutdown Protection - Temperature sensing electronics usedin the electronic speed control detect overloading and overheating ofthe transistor circuitry. If excessive temperature is detected, the unitautomatically shuts down to prevent damage to the electronics.Frequency band - The radio frequency used by the transmitter to sendsignals to your model. All Traxxas RTR models operate on a 27 MHzfrequency band.kV Ratin
