MasterSeal HLM 5000Liquid cold-applied elastomeric waterproofing membrane systemDESCRIPTIONMasterSeal HLM 5000 is a one-component,moisture-curing, bitumen-modified polyurethaneelastomeric waterproofing membrane for exteriorbelow-grade or between-slab applications. It is available in these grades:MasterSeal HLM 5000 SL (self-levelling/squeegee)MasterSeal HLM 5000 R (roller)MasterSeal HLM 5000 is a bitumen modifiedpolyurethane.PRODUCT HIGHLIGHTS Available in standard and high-build systems Waterproofing membrane to prevent waterpenetration Elastomeric accommodates expansion andcontraction Wide service-temperature range, makingMasterSeal HLM 5000 suitable for all climates Chemical resistance to bacterial attack, selectacids, alkalis and salts Seamless cold-applied membrane eliminateslapping, seaming and precutting Does not require hot-melt equipmentTYPICAL APPLICATIONSConcretePlywood (exterior)Exterior below grade (on masonry, concrete, and incidental metal) Above grade (between two-course concrete andwithin cavity walls) Parking garages and concrete tanks Plaza decks and malls Fountains and pools Balconies and planters Below-grade slabs Walls and culverts Sea walls, dams and reservoirs COMPLIANCESASTM C 836National standard of Canada 37.58 - M86developed by CGSBPACKAGINGMasterSeal HLM 5000 SL:18.95 litre (21.999kg) pailsMasterSeal HLM 5000 R:18.95 litre (23.814kg) pailsTYPICAL PROPERTIES*PropertyMinimum recoverySwelling in water(3 days at room temperature)Service temp MinMaxValue90%Nil-40 C49 CCOVERAGE / YIELDApprox. 0.6-0.7m² / litre at 1.4-1.7mm wet thickness(1.1-1.4mm dry thickness)Coverage may vary with the application techniqueused. For best results, all concrete deck surfacesshould be lightly steel trowelled to a flat, uniformsurface. A light broom finish is acceptable. Newconcrete must be properly water cured at least14 days. Membrane curing compounds must bemechanically removed.2. For extremely porous block: Prime with a coatof MasterSeal HLM 5000 diluted up to 25%with a suitable thinner (Xylene / MEK /Acetone).3. Remove dust, dirt and other contaminants justbefore or during application. Surfaces must bedry at the time of application.4. Air-void pockmarks or honeycombs must beopened up to allow MasterSeal HLM 5000 to fillthe cavities completely. Air entrapment withinvoids may cause blisters. Extreme cases mayrequire additional repair.PRESTRIPING1. Before applying the final membrane, all joints, cracks and openings around protrusions mustbe sealed by caulking or prestriping (apreliminary coating of MasterSeal HLM 5000applied with a trowel or stiff-bristled brush).Allow to dry overnight before applying finalmembrane.2. When the final membrane is applied, the overallthickness over joints and cracks, at coves andaround penetrations should be approximately2.5mm on the standard system.STATIC JOINTS AND CRACKSJoints and cracks less than 1.5mm should befilled by prestriping. Apply material so it both fillsand overlaps the joint or crack to a width of100mm on each side.WORKING OR EXPANSION JOINTSAll joints over 3mm must be sealed with aMaster Builders Solutions urethane sealant.Any working joint less than 3mm should berouted to a minimum of 6mm and filled with asealant. Prevent the waterproofing membranefrom adhering to the joint sealant, which couldcause sealant or membrane failure, by applyinga coat of wax or bond breaker tape over thecured sealant and then prestriping.PLACING / APPLICATIONA test application is always recommended beforeproceeding with entire application.NOTE: Finish coat must be applied in a pinholefree, continuous membrane for waterproofingintegrity.STANDARD SYSTEM1. Select the grade of MasterSeal HLM 5000 thatbest meets individual job requirements. UseMasterSeal HLM 5000 R for roller application orMasterSeal HLM 5000 SL for squeegeeapplication.2. For horizontal applications, empty contents ofpail and spread immediately to ensureworkability. Best results are obtained by markingoff approx. 11m² for 1.7mm wft or 13.5m² for1.4mm wft areas and evenly spreading thecontents of a 18.95 litre unit with a rubber-edgednotched squeegee. Repeat the above procedureuntil the entire surface is covered.3. For vertical applications, apply by roller at therate of 0.6-0.7m²/litre at 1.4-1.7mm wft.

MasterSeal HLM 5000Best results are obtained by marking off approx.11m² or 13.5m² and evenly applying the contentsof a 18.95 litre pail.4. Verify the applied thickness with a wet mil gaugeas the work progresses.5. The integrity of the cured membrane on ahorizontal surface may be verified by dammingthe entire area and flooding with water to aminimum depth of 51mm and allowing the waterto stand for 24-48 hours. Visually inspect thebottom surface to check for any waterpenetration. If repairs are necessary, the areashould be drained and allowed to dry beforereapplying MasterSeal HLM 5000. Afterreapplication, the area should be tested again formembrane integrity.HIGH-BUILD SYSTEMConcrete application: Apply approx. 1.5mm ofMasterSeal HLM 5000, followed by settingreinforcing fabric into the wet material. Overlap allseams a minimum of 76mm. Additional materialmay be required to properly embed the reinforcingfabric where it overlaps. Allow the first coat to cureovernight and follow with a second approx. 1.5mmapplication of MasterSeal HLM 5000.CURINGAppreciable properties develop within 24-48 hoursat 24 C and 50% relative humidity. ProtectMasterSeal HLM 5000 from traffic during curing.DRAINAGE AND PROTECTION1. For protection during backfill and wherehydrostatic pressure is anticipated, use theappropriate Drain Board System for installationinstructions.2. For protection during backfill only, installprotection board as soon as possible followingcure of MasterSeal HLM 5000.CLEANINGClean all tools and equipment immediately afterapplication with a suitable thinner (Xylene / MEK /Acetone).FOR BEST PERFORMANCE Apply MasterSeal HLM 5000 when substratesare dry and air temperatures are 4 to 32 C; for application at temperatures below 4 C, consultTechnical Services.Temperatures influence viscosity and handlingcharacteristics of MasterSeal HLM 5000: heatincreases and cold decreases the flow. KeepMasterSeal HLM 5000 cool in hot weather andwarm in cold weather.Avoid application when inclement weather ispresent or imminent.Do not apply to reinforcing bars or to wet orcontaminated surfaces.Do not directly heat containers with flame, stove, hot plate or oven.Patch all voids and deep depressions insubstrates with appropriate patching materialbefore applying MasterSeal HLM 5000.Before applying MasterSeal HLM 5000, dam alldrains and drain openings.Carefully work material over irregular concreteto avoid pinholes and holidays.Protect MasterSeal HLM 5000 coated surfacesfrom puncture with protection board untilrequired topping or backfill is placed. Not intended as an exposed or wearing surface.Do not use where a solvent odour isobjectionable, e.g., near areas where foodpreparation or processing occur during theapplication.Specify wet or paper curing for concrete to becoated with MasterSeal HLM 5000; avoid usingliquid curing compounds. In horizontal applications concrete must beslopped to drain to avoid ponding water on thesurface of MasterSeal HLM 5000When using drainage mat directly overMasterSeal HLM 5000, a layer of 0.15mmpolyethylene sheeting should be used betweenthe MasterSeal HLM 5000 and the drainagemat.GENERAL Proper application is the responsibility of theuser.
