AfterJune 6, VA cannot furnish care under the Veterans Choice Program (VCP). The two other most important changes thatbecome effective on June 6 include: New eligibility criteria, which will go into effect for Veteran community care. A new urgent care benefit, which will become available.Veterans should continue to talk with their VA care team about the best way to get the care they need—either from a VAmedical facility or community provider. As they do now, Veterans may also need to pay a copayment for care fornonservice-connected conditions, just as they would if they received care at a VA medical facility. Special copaymentrules apply to the new urgent care benefit.Under the new MISSION Act, the access standard for receiving care in the community will be a 30-minute drive from anyVA clinic or a 20-day wait for VA service. For specialty care in the community it will be a 60-minute drive from any VAclinic, or a 28-day wait for service. There are six criteria for community care eligibility:1. The specific care you need is not provided by VA at any facility.2. You reside in a U.S. state (AK, HI, or NH) or territory (Guam, American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, orU.S. Virgin Islands) that does not have a full-service VA medical facility.3. “Grandfathered” eligibility based on residence and the 40-mile eligibility criterion from the Choice program.4. The specific care you need is not available within designated access standards.a. As an example, the DC VA MC does not perform brain surgery. If a Veteran needs to see a neurosurgeon, they are typically referred to WRNMMC. The DC VA Medical Center is known for cardiac thoracic surgeryand the Baltimore Medical Center is known for spinal cord and back surgery.5. You and your referring clinician decide it is in your best medical interest to receive the specific care you need inthe community.6. VA has designated the VA medical service line delivering the specific care you need as not providing care thatcomplies with VA’s standards for quality. With urgent care, Veterans have a new option for care for the treatment of minor injuries and illnesses, such as colds, sore throats, and minor skin infections. The benefit is offered in addition to the opportunity to receive care from a VAprovider, as VA also offers same-day services.Eligible Veterans will be able to receive urgent care from an urgent care provider that is part of VA’s contracted networkof community providers without prior authorization from VA. VA can pay for an urgent care claim only if: The Veteran is eligible for the benefit; The urgent care provider is part of VA’s contracted network of community providers; and The services are not excluded under the benefit (excluded services include preventive services and dental services).
