Getting StartedInstalling Your PhoneCharge the Battery1. Unpack all handsets,batterypacks, andbatterycovers. Ifyou need toremove acover, press in on the notch andslide the cover down and off.2. Line up the battery connectorwith the jack inside the handset;the connector only fits one way.3. Push the connector in untilit clicks into place; tug gentlyon the wires to make sure thebattery is securely connected.4. Replace the battery cover andslide it into place.5. Use an AC adapter to connectthe power jack on the base to aregular indoor (120V AC) poweroutlet. Connect any chargers thesame way.6. Place a handset in the base withthe display facing forward. Ifthe display doesn’t light up,reseat the handset or connectthe base to a different outlet. For2 or more handsets, place eachhandset in a charger.##Charge all handsetscompletely (about 15 hours)before using.Connect the Telephone CordUse the telephone cord to connectthe TEL LINE jack on the base to astandard telephone wall jack.Test the Connection1. Pick up the handset and pressTalk . The handset sounds a dialtone, and the display shows Talk.––If you don't hear a dial tone orthe display says Check Tel Line,check the connection betweenthe base and the phone jack.2. If you get a Call Waiting call, the phone sounds a tone and displaysany CID information received from the waiting call. Press Talk/flashto switch between the current call and the waiting call; each time youswitch, there is a short pause before you're connected to the other call.Using the PhonebookThe phone can store up to 100 entries in its phonebook. All handsets sharethe same phonebook, so only one handset can access it at a time.10 -English

When thedelete the current entryphone prompts you to confirm, select Yes.Press and hold the speed dial number (0 - 9)make a speed dial callfor 1.5 seconds. The speed dial entry displays.Press TALK or SPEAKER to dial the number.Adding Phonebook EntriesWith the phone in standby, open the phonebook. Press Menu/select andselect Create New. Enter a name, number, and then assign a speed dialnumber and a personal ring if desired. Enter the phone number (up to 20 digits) exactly as you would dial it. If you need the phone to wait before sending the next set of digits, pressRedial/pause to insert a 2-second pause. You can insert multiple pauses,but each one counts as a digit (you’ll see P in the display).Deleting All the Phonebook EntriesWith the phone in standby, open the phonebook. Press Menu/select andselect Delete All. When the phone prompts you to confirm, select Yes.Using Special FeaturesSilent ModeYou can silence the ringers on the base and all handsets for a specificperiod of time; the answering system answers any incoming calls withoutplaying anything through the speaker.1. With the phone in standby, press and hold # on any handset. The phoneprompts you to select the number of hours (1 - 9 or Always On) that youwant it to stay in silent mode.2. To confirm, press # or just wait about 5 seconds. The phone turns on theanswering system and displays Silent Mode On on each handset.English - 11

3. After the selected number of hours, the phone automatically exits silentmode. To exit silent mode manually, press and hold # again.##If the phone is in silent mode and you turn off the answeringsystem, the phone exits silent mode.Multihandset Features##To use the features in this section, you need at least 2 handsets. Your base supports a total of 12 cordless handsets: the one that camewith the base and up to 11 DCX170 accessory handsets. Your base alsosupports a total of 2 DRX100 range extenders, including any that camewith your phone. If you have any DWX handsets, the D1780 is limited toa total of 6 accessory handsets You must register accessory handsets to the base before using them.(Handsets that came packaged with the base are already registered.) Handsets that aren’t registered display a Not Registered message. Forregistration instructions, see p. 18, or see the accessory handset manual. If a handset was ever registered to a base, you must reset it before it canregister to a new base; see p. 18, or see the accessory handset manual.Conference Calling When an outside call comes in, two handsets can join in a conferencecall with the outside caller. To join a call that’s already in progress, just press Talk/flash or Speaker . To leave the conference call, hang up normally; the other handsetremains connected to the call.Call TransferTo.Press.Intercom/clear. The phone puts the call on hold andprompts you to select the handset you want to page.When the other handset accepts the call, you'll bedisconnected (press Talk/flash to rejoin the call).cancel a transfer Talk/flash to return to the call.accept aIntercom/clear to answer the page and speak to the othertransferred call handset. Then, press Talk/flash to speak to the caller.transfer a callPrivacy ModeTo activate privacy mode on a call in progress, press Menu/select twice.As long as privacy mode is on, you'll see a in the display, and no other12 -English

You can make an intercom call from any handset, but only two handsetscan be in an intercom call at any time. If an outside call comes in during an intercom page, the phone cancelsthe page so you can answer the incoming call. If an outside call comes in during an intercom call, press Talk/flash tohang up the intercom call and answer the outside call.To.make an intercompagecancel a pageanswer a pageend an intercom callPress.Intercom/clear. Select the handset you want to talkwith, or All to page all handsets at the same time.End.Intercom/clear or Talk/flash.End. Both handsets return to standby.Chain DialingIf you often have to enter a series of digits or a code number during acall, you can save that code number to a phonebook entry and use thephonebook to send the code number.1. Enter the code number (up to 20 digits) into the phonebook just likea regular phonebook entry. Be sure to enter the code number into thephonebook exactly as you would enter it during a call.2. When you hear the prompt that tells you to enter the number, open thephonebook and find the entry that contains your code number.3. Press Menu/select to send the code. If you change your mind, just closethe phonebook.Voice Message NotificationIf you subscribe to a voice mail service, your phone displays the voicemail icon () when you have a new message. This feature supportsFrequency-Shift Keying (FSK) notification, which you can turn on and offthrough Global Setup/Voice Mail Tone.English - 13

After you listen to your messages, the message icon turns off. If it doesn’t,you can reset it: With the phone in standby, open the menu and selectGlobal Setup; select VMWI Reset, then select Yes.Using the Answering SystemAnswering System Options (Answering Setup)You can set or change the answering system options from any handset. Programming a Security CodeWith the phone in standby, open the menu; select Ans. Setup, then selectSecurity Code. Use the number keypad to enter a two-digit security code(01 to 99). Press Menu/select when you’re finished.##Remember to make a note of your new security code!Dialing In to Your System1. Call your phone number & wait until the system answers. (If the systemis turned off, it answers after 10 rings & sounds a series of beeps.)2. During the greeting or beeps, press 0 and immediately enter yoursecurity code. If you enter it incorrectly 3 times, the system hangs upand returns to standby.3. The system announces the time, the numberof messages in memory, and a help prompt.
