DATA MANAGEMENT SOLUTIONSEven moderate scale Asset IntegrityManagement programs produce massivequantities of data that must be effectivelymanaged. Because the databases thatresult from AIM implementations can beso large, even simple data entry taskscan involve so many data points that theyoverwhelm even well staffed inspectiondepartments.Furthermore, most standard corrosionmonitoring software packages are limitedin their ability to accept, let alone correlatethe full range of supporting documentsand information required for compliance.And almost none of the standardpackages can automatically link data inthe database to CAD drawings or fieldsketches.Another significant weakness of standardsystems is that they typically only identifyvisual observations as open or closed,and provide no effective means to trackwhether or not the remediations arecompleted within the client’s deadlines.SGS provides services which can addressthese common data management issues.SGS data analysts provide expert corrosiondata entry support to our clients using awide range of commercial softwarepackages including SAP, IBM Maximo,UltraPIPE, PCMS, Credo, etc. As a result,SGS has the flexibility to support ourclients existing programs, rather thancompel them to adopt a restrictedcorrosion monitoring software approach.In addition, through specialized protocols,SGS data analysts have successfullylinked the corrosion monitoring data instandard industry software to fieldsketches, CAD drawings, and evenphotographs. This process providesour clients’ inspection and maintenancepersonnel with actionable drawingswithout having to go through thetraditional process of hand markinginspection due and retirement duedrawings based on paper inspectionreports. This SGS method improvesthe accuracy of the resulting drawingsrelative to traditional methods whileactually reducing the time to producethe required documents.SGS can also provide a MechanicalIntegrity Management System (MIMS)which interfaces with the client’s existingcorrosion monitoring software. TheSGS MIMS is a web-based applicationwhich facilitates data entry, tracking ofvisual observations, reporting of keyperformance indicators, and electronicdocument management. The data entry portion of MIMSautomatically distributes data intoindustry standard databases, effectivelyreducing repetitive data input. In addition,built-in error checking prevents commonerrors, such as accidental entry of duplicatecircuits within a database, and thicknessreading values inconsistent with standardpiping sizes.The recommendation tracking portion ofMIMS tracks the status of each visuallyobserved condition and recommendation.These can be searched and displayed bya wide variety of criteria including location(geographical, unit, GPS coordinates),priority, status (open or closed), specificcondition, equipment type, maintenanceclass (maintenance or repair), and manyothers.The Key Performance Indicator (KPI)portion of MIMS displays in real-timethe status of the AIM programimplementation using client definedmeasurements. Most clients findthe display of the status of the visualobservations and recommendationsamong the most useful KPI’s. Typicallythese include a scorecard showing thestatus of recommendations resulting fromthe visual observations. The scorecarddisplays the total number of observationsmade by priority, the number of openconditions, the number of closedconditions, and the number overdue.tanks, the system automatically providesa gap analysis as to the completeness andavailability of regulatory agency requiredtank documentation. This MIMS featuresubstantially improves the AIM program’srobustness for audit.The electronic document managementportion of MIMS provides rapid accessto critical primary documents associatedwith pressure vessels and tanks. Forpressure vessels, the system providesweb-based data screens displaying keymanufacturer’s data and documents forthe vessel, as well as an automated gapassessment for the completeness of thevessel’s documentation. Similarly, forSGS AIM implementation experts areready to assist our clients at their pointof need with these data managementsolutions, without requiring a change incorrosion monitoring software or RBIsystems.The MIMS system also works incooperation with most RBI softwareprograms to assist in the organisationof the data at the RBI program inception,as well as tracking of the data andinspections during the RBI implementation.S system. RISK-BASED INSPECTION – RBIRisk-based inspection is an approach toAsset Integrity Management which seeksto optimize inspection activities based onthe likelihood and consequence of failureof components and systems. Using thismethodology, inspection frequency ishighest for the highest risk systems,and the interval between inspectionsis lengthened for those systems whichhave the lowest risk. This common-senseapproach to inspection can significantlyincrease a plant’s on-stream availability,reduce costs and un-planned downtime.The primary objectives in implementingan RBI program are to produce aninspection strategy that clearly statesWHAT: The equipment that needs tobe inspectedWHEN: The optimum interval betweeninspectionsHOW: Specify the right technique todetect the defects that a particularcomponent is most likely todevelopSGS has implemented nearly twohundred RBI programs world-wide since1989. Unlike most service providers whoare tied to a single RBI software solution,SGS has implemented programs usingnearly every major commercially availableRBI software program.
