Manufacturerswere helping to lead the country outof the recession. Now, the challengeis to turn “The Comeback Kid” into aconsistent and steady player, an effortthat will require stable support — evenduring the inevitable slumps — so thatAmerican manufacturing can continueto grow and thrive.Despite a slowdown over the pastyear, manufacturers across the U.S.are reporting steady growth. The mostwidely recognized gauge of U.S. manufacturing is the Institute for SupplyManagement’s(ISM) Manufacturing Survey in which ameasurementover 50% indicates that business is growing. At the heightof the recessionin December2008, the PMIIndex for manufacturing was 33.1%. In July 2013, theIndex was 55.4%.We can see the growing strength ofU.S. manufacturing at industry tradeshows, too. 4THe OFFICIAL SHOW DAILYMONDAY NOVEMBER 18, 2013FABTECH 2013ESAB Showcases New HELIARC Inverter-basedWelding MachinesESAB Welding & Cutting Productsspotlights the new Heliarc product family of inverter-based weldingmachines designed for high qualityAC/DC GTAW (TIG) and SMAW(Stick) welding at FABTECH 2013,Booth N1449.Inverter-based TechnologyThe new Heliarc uses inverter technology, which delivers significantlyincreased energy efficiency and superior functionality in a package thatis lighter and smaller than an oldSCR technology machines and competitively priced versus other AC/DC inverters.Superior TIG and Stick PerformanceHeliarc welding machines providesuperior AC/DC GTAW (TIG) andoutstanding AC and DC SMAW(Stick) performance, including cellulosic (E-XX10, E-XX11) electrodes.Easy-to-achieve, optimized arc settings enable the operator to weld aluminum using a pointed tungsten. Thetungsten remains pointed improvingarc starts, heat input and arc stability, thus assuring high quality welds.Heliarc’s pulse control allows forsmaller HAZ (Heat Affect Zone),better control of the weld pool, andless plate deformation. In AC GTAW mode, the powersource uses high frequency (HF) onlyto initiate the arc, compared to olderpower source technology which requires HF to be continuous. Heliarc’sfast switching AC process removes theneed for HF during welding, reducingelectrical noise and the risk of interference to surrounding electronics. Highfrequency can be switched off in favorYou will neveroutperform China.Mexico, India or the guy in Indiana if you keepcutting your own profits.Stop wasting material.Take your efficiency seriously.Switch to SigmaNEST.513-674-0005Visit Boothof ESAB’s liveTIG arc startmethod whenwelding in areas where highfrequency is notpermitted.Enhanced ACbalance controlsprovide significantly improvedcleaning or penetration compared to conventional AC/DC power sources. Heliarcprovides an AC frequency controlwhich focuses the arc for narrow weldbeads and faster travel speed. Reducing the weld bead has significant advantages in reducing cost, as well asin reducing welding consumable andarc time, results in improved efficiencyand operating profit.Heliarc also features AC Pulse(GTAW) TIG from 0.4 up to 2Hzideal for welding thin aluminum. Highspeed DC pulse GTAW (TIG) provides a smooth welding output whichis precisely controlled to deliver fastertravel speeds and more penetration. Increasing the pulses per second also improves arc stability and perfects interfusion between base and filler material.Easy Setup and OperationHeliarc’s control panel is easy to setupand operate. Five clear, logical workzones on the control panel allow theoperator to choose the options andsettings needed for fast set up and excellent arc control. The machine’s in-ternal communication is entirely digital for high accuracy and repeatability. All controls are centrally located.Easy-to-use buttons provide slopedown, pulse current, backgroundcurrent, pre-gas, post-gas, pulse andduty options. 6THe OFFICIAL SHOW DAILYMONDAY NOVEMBER 18, 2013“Manufacturing is Here to Stay”show last year. By the end of this week,FABTECH expects to break recordsfor attendance and exhibit space withmore than 35,000 attendees and 1,500exhibitors covering more than 600,000net square feet of floor space at McCormick Place. There is still debate among analystsin the media as to whether the U.S.manufacturing sector is truly enjoyinga renaissance. Some say that the futureis bright, while others assert that thecurrent uptick pales in comparison tothe massive loss of manufacturing jobsat the beginning of the 2000s. Bothare missing the point. The simple fact is that manufacturing continues to be an important forcein the American economy, helping todriving innovation, investment and jobcreation. Research done by The Manufacturing Institute points out thatthe manufacturing sector’s economicmultiplier effect is higher than that ofmany other sectors because every dollar in final sales of manufactured goodsadds 1.48 in economic output fromother sectors of the U.S. economy. The American public also believesin the importance of manufacturing. In a 2012 Deloitte survey, 90 percentof respondents rated manufacturing as“important” or “very important” forboth their personal economic prosperity and our country’s standard of living. Further, when asked what type offacility they would choose to open inVISIT US ATBOOTH #S4939continued from page 1order to create new jobs in their community, respondents ranked manufacturing high on their lists, putting iteven ahead of energy, technology andhealth care. The challenge for the industry andfor policymakers, then, is how to putthe manufacturing sector on a long termpath toward growth and expansion. When talking to manufacturers, here is what we hear: Give businesses certainty. Businesses cannot make long term plansand investments when there is uncertainty over what their tax rate willbe, what regulations are pending andwhat level of health care costs theywill need to pay. Providing certaintyfor manufacturers who need to understand their obligations should notbe a partisan issue. Remember small manufacturers intax reform. Eighty-one percent ofmanufacturing businesses in the U.S.are S-Corporations or other forms ofpass-through entities, according to theS-Corporation of America. S-Corporations are different from C-Corporations in that they are not taxedseparately from their owners. So taxreform proposals that only deal withcorporate taxes and not individual taxes would leave out the large number ofmanufacturers organized as S-Corporations, putting these companies at asevere disadvantage.Dan DavitzPresidentMagic Rack /Production Plus Corp. Don’t sacrifice innovation and capitalinvestment in the name of tax reform.Manufacturers often depend on taxcredits when making important decisions that require advance planninglike purchasing new machines and hiring more employees. Many of these taxcredits have already expired multipletimes, only to be renewed at the lastmoment. And many are hanging in thebalance again. This back-and-forth oncrucial programs like the Research andDevelopment Tax Credit, the Section179 Equipment Expensing Deduction and the Bonus Depreciation taxdeduction is devastating to small andmedium-sized manufacturers who utilize these policy tools to make the biginvestments that ensure their competitiveness in the years ahead. Teach young workers the skillsneeded for manufacturing careers.Manufacturing jobs are good, highpaying jobs, but manufacturers can’tfind workers with the skills neededfor available jobs. As a result, thereare tens of thousands of job openingsin manufacturing today. And, with anaging workforce, this problem is onlygoing to get worse. The source of this problem is complex. One aspect is an education system that has eliminated shop coursesand often steers kids away from twoyear technical colleges and vocationalschools. Another component is themisconception that manufacturing is aExperienceDan DavitzPresidentMagic Rack /Production Plus Corp. theMagicRackUIF .BHJD 3BDL EJGGFSFODF UIF .BHJD 3BDL EJGGFSFODF Difference Custom-designedracking solutionsengineeredto redto finishingmaximizeline.your finishing line.difference.Our personalapproachto providinguniqueThat’s the MagicThat’sRack thedifference. Our personalapproachto providing uniqueMagic Racksolutions that makeoptimumof optimumrack spaceis khasspaceis uswhatmade us the industryleaderrackingin customleaderfinishingsolutionsfor oversolutions30 years.Custom-designsolutionsengineeredto formaximizeyour finishing line.in customfinishingover 30 years. If we don’t effectivelypromote our sector, no one else is going to do it for us.Manufacturers are incorporatinginnovative techniques to fight theseproblems: The American WeldingSociety works with the Boy Scoutsof America to offer a Welding meritbadge, the Chemical Coaters Association International offers scholarships to students studying PolymericScience and Manufacturing Day, coproduced by the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, International, the National Association of Manufacturers and NIST-MEP, encouragesmanufacturers to open their doors andinvite their communities inside to experience modern 21st-century manufacturing facilities. Policies should beenacted that support these and otherefforts by manufacturers to bolster thefuture of American manufacturing.Recognizing the need for coordination among key institutions addressing the skills gap, the SMEEducation Foundation is developinginnovative partnerships involving organizations, businesses and exemplary schools to provide a comprehensivecommunity-based approach to manufacturing education.Create a manufacturing strategy forthe U.S. The U.S. is one of the onlyindustrialized countries in the worldthat doesn’t have an industrial strategyto build and grow a sustainable U.S.manufacturing sector. Such a strategyis essential to protect our national security and strengthen our economy inthe long run.Increase cooperation between manufacturers and the military to findskilled workers. Thousands of servicemen and women will be coming homein the coming years as the U.S. windsdown operations in Afghanistan. These soldiers often have skill sets andinterests that closely align with thegoals of American manufacturers.Renaissance or not, the growingmanufacturing sector continues tohelp drive the U.S. economy. You’llwitness manufacturing’s vitality ondisplay first-hand throughout allfour days at the FABTECH Exposition and Conference. Enjoy theexperience. n
