What happens to the Stuff that is put into those RumpkeBins and Drop Boxes for Recycling?1. Consumer Products contained in steel cans, aluminum cans, glass jars and jugs, or plastic pet and HDPE bottles are purchased.2. Once the products inside the containers are used, the emptycontainers are commingled (mixed together) and are placed in a binat curbside or are taken to a drop box, where they are collected forrecycling.3. A 25-cubic yard converted garbage truck that compacts the recyclable containers, just like garbage is compacted, picks ups thecontainers from the bins.4. The truck or roll off takes the recyclable containers to RumpkeTransfer Station, where the containers are transferred to a 100 cubic yard truck. At Rumpke's Material Recovery Facility in Dayton, commingled recyclables from Darke County go upthe conveyor belt to be sorted5. The truck transports the containers to the Rumpke Material Recovery Facility in Dayton.6. At the facility, the containers are dumped at the bottom of aconveyor belt.7. Once on the conveyor belt, they are automatically sorted at the rate of 15 tons per hour.8. Once sorted, the materials are either baled and loaded into semi -trailers or loaded looseinto large containers for shipment to mills or secondary processing facilities.9. At the processing plant, they are shredded, repelletized, or melted down into materialsthat can be used in the manufacturing process.10. The processed materials are transported to a manufacturing plant.11. At the manufacturing plant, the materials are made into new products for retail.Waste Companies Offering RecyclingOpportunities within Darke County.BestWay WasteRandolph Farms, Inc, owner765-853-5714Countryside WasteAllied Waste Industries, Inc,owner1-800-686-2952After the commingled recyclables have been sorted, they are stored in large bins until they can be transported to a processing plant, where they will be repelletized, shredded, or melted down into a formthat can be used in the manufacturing process toGreenville Transfer StationRumpke Consolidated Waste, Owner548-2514 ext: 7368

What happens to your Recycables?Your red Rumpke recycling bin should be placed atthe curb the night before your scheduled pick-up.Recyclables are picked up by a specially designedtruck separate from the traditional garbage vehicle. The Rumpke recycling employee initially separatesnewspapers and brown grocery bags from other“commingled” material (glass, aluminum cans, plastics, etc.). Newspapers and brown grocery bags arekept in a separate compartment of the recyclingtruck to keep them separate from other commingledmaterial. At the state-of-the-art recycling center, automatedand manual separation processes are employed tosort materials into appropriate categories. Onceseparated, materials are then baled or containerizedfor shipping to various mills and reprocessing facilities where the recyclables are used to make newitems.Should an unacceptable item be placed in your recycling bin, your Rumpke recycling driver will place asticker on it and leave it in your bin indicating theitem is not being accepted at this time.At the end of the route, each recycling truck isIf you have questions about whether an item is acweighed and unloaded for sorting at Rumpke’s recy- cepted in the recycling program, why an item wasn’tcling facility located in Dayton.accepted, or need to k now more about recycling, please feel free to call the Rumpke Recycling Hotlineat 1-800-223 -3960 or the Darke County Solid WasteDistrict office at 937-547-7369.Why these items are not accepted .Plastic CapsCurrently, limited markets exist for thesetypes of plastic. Aluminum CansRecycling aluminum cans prevents the pollution thatoccurs from mining bauxite, the ore from which aluminum is extracted. Twenty aluminum cans can be madewith the energy needed to produce one can of virginore. Throwing away "one" aluminum can wastes asmuch energy as filling the can half full of gasoline andpouring it out.Fiction: It isn't necessary to recycle to "save trees" because we are growing as many as we cut.Fact: We are growing trees in a process called clearcutting. This means all the foliage is burned andcleared away from the areas surrounding the trees. Asa result, each generation of trees becomes weaker because they lack valuable nutrients from the foliage andother organic matter that decays and absorbs into thesoil, nourishing trees (Nature's Recycling). Many ofthese trees are cut before they can grow to maturity.Just ask a carpenter how difficult it is to obtain qualitylumber these days.Used Motor OilIt takes 42 gallon of high-quality crude oil to produce 2*quarts of motor oil. It takes one gallon of waste oil toproduce the same amount.Statistics show that during a month's time, two tons ofmotor oil will be poured into area drains. When youconsider that only one quart of oil can pollute 250,000gallons of water, this is a serious problem.Used Car BatteriesAlthough batteries represent less than one percent byweight of municipal solid waste, they account for 52%of all cadmium and 88% of all mercury found in thePapersolid waste stream. As a result, used car batteries, ifOver 40% of the waste that goes into a landfill is paper, not recycled or disposed of properly, can cause seriamounting to 72.6 million tons per year in Americaous problems for the environment and human health.alone. Contrary to popular belief, paper does not biodegrade quickly in a landfill. In fact, newspapers havePlasticbeen found that could still be read forty years after disAll plastic is made from petroleum. When you throwposal. When you consider that Americans cut down830 million trees per year for paper products alone, it is away plastic, you also throw away petroleum that waseasy to see the importance of recycling as much paper used to produce it, which is renewable natural resource. By recycling plastic, you can reduce Ameras we possibly can. One ton of paper recycled save3.5 cubic yards of landfill space, 17 trees, 7,000 gallons ica's reliance on foreign oil. Bio-plastics are now beingproduced which substitute oil from organic waste inof water, 380 gallons of oil, 4100 kw hours of electricity, 60 lbs. of air pollution, and 850 lbs. of CO2 per year. place of petroleum.Fluorescent LightsMercury accumulates in human and animal tissue andin the environment. If released into the environment, mercury can become transformed into more toxicforms and can concentrate in food chains, where humans can be exposed through eating mercurycontaminated food. Mercury ingested by humans cancause brain damage, disabilities, birth defects, and inextreme cases, death.TiresA regular automobile is made from five gallons of oil.By recycling, you can reduce reliance on foreign oil.SteelSteel has long been one of our most recycled materials. Just about all steel containers made contain recycled steel. Americans are currently recycling 55% ofall steel that is produced.GlassGlass can be recycled again and again with no loss ofquality in the new containers made from recycledglass. And, every ton of glass that is recycled savesthe equivalent of nine gallons of fuel oil. This also reduces America's reliance on foreign oil.Products Made From Recycled MaterialsInstead of being buried or burned, waste materials arebeing recycled into attractive, strong, and durableproducts. When manufactured and marketed, theseproducts are putting thousands of people to work. Recycled from milk jugs, pop cans, food cans, automobiletires, and glass bottles, these products make up ballfields, play structures, park equipment, walkways, roadways, railways, roofing, andmuch more. They are changing theway Americans think about recyclingmaterials.
