Medium voltage cablesApril 2015

This manual contains technical information on a wide variety of commonly used medium voltage (MV) power cablesmanufactured to Australian Standard AS/NZS 1429.1.Full constructional and technical details are given forPrysmian’s standard range of MV power cables. Otherconstructions and variants are available by special order.Recommended useThe cables described in this technical manual are designedto be used for the supply of electrical energy in fixedinstallations up to the indicated rated voltage at a nominalpower frequency in the range 49Hz to 61Hz.Cables to AS/NZS 1429.1 and AS/NZS 4026 are intendedfor use either installed in air, directly buried in the groundor in ducts. Cables with LSOH sheath have improved fireperformance when installed in air and are primarily intendedfor such locations. Reasonable protection against mechanicaldamage should be provided.Cables in this technical manual are not specifically designedfor use as self-supporting aerial cables, as submarine cables, where exposure to excessive heat or corrosive products orsolvent substances is involved. In case of any doubt concerning the suitability of a particular cable type for a particularuse, guidance should be sought from Prysmian’s CustomerService Centre.Whilst every care has been taken in the preparation of this publication, the Prysmian Group take no responsibility for any errors and or omissions. This booklet is intended as a guide only and reference must be made by any person using this booklet to the appropriate Australian/New Zealand Standard and or to local electricitysupply authority rulings. Do you always get what you see?Probably not. And that’s definitely true for cables.Cables might look the same on the outside. But it’s the inside that counts. And that can differ enormously. We have always worked with quality as our top priority, listened to our customers and customised our cablesto perfectly fit their needs. ‘Cause we have and always will continue to believe that quality pays off.Australian made? Yes, of course.

Compact round conductors, composed of several layers of concentric spiral-wound wires. Medium Voltage Underground Cables 8 Around the conductor, it is necessary to provide insulation to prevent electrical short circuits. In medium voltage cables there are two main types of insulation material: l XLPE – Cross linked Polyethylene – the most common material for MV cables today. l EPR .
