Evelyn Clark Designs . . .Swallowtail Lace ShawlA border of lily of the valley adds an interestingcounterpoint to the tiny budding lace pattern atthe top of this small shawl. It ends with a scallopededging, and the lace throughout has an Estonianinfluence. This shawl looks great in both solid and semi-solidcolor lace, fingering, and Shetland/sport/DK weightyarns. This design originally appeared in the Fall 2006issue of Interweave Knits.Advanced Skill NeededKnitting nuppsAbbreviationsincincrease 1 by knitting in front and back ofstitchkknitk2tog knit 2 stitches togetherppurlp5tog purl 5 stitches togetherRSright side of shawlsk2p slip 1 stitch knitwise, k2tog, and passslipped stitch over k2togsskslip 1 stitch knitwise, slip next stitch knit-wise, replace on holding needle, and k2togthrough back loopsst(s) stitch(es)St st stockinette stitchWSwrong side of shawlyoyarn over*repeat instructions between asterisks[]repeat instructions inside brackets specifiednumber of times or to remaining number ofstitchesYarn WeightYarn AmountSample Shawl50g (437 yds/400m) Misti Alpaca Lace, lace weightyarn (23 wpi), 100% baby alpaca, Color 7120Circular Needles24" (61 cm) or longer needles in size to obtaingauge. InstructionsSupplies2 stitch markers; 1 coilless safety pin; tapestryneedle to weave in yarn ends; and rustproof pinsfor blockingOptional Supplies1 yd (1m) smooth waste yarn and crochet hook forprovisional cast-on; and blocking wiresShawl Notes1. Shawl is a triangle made up of 2 trianglesseparated by the center stitch. It is workedfrom the top down and increases 4 stitchesevery other row to the edging.2. It is helpful to place markers before the centerstitch and the last 2 border stitches, as wellas to hang a safety pin at the edge to markbeginning of odd numbered rows.3. Nupps are made by loosely working k1, yo, k1,yo, k1 into a stitch to increase 5 stitches; onthe next row, purl those 5 stitches together. Itis important to work the nupp loosely.4. Lace can be worked from written instructions orcharts.5. Wraps-per-inch (wpi) is a way to measure yarnsize. Without stretching, wrap yarn around aruler for 1" (2.5cm), and count the strands.INSTRUCTIONS—Cast-onShawl can be started with the Garter Stitch Tab orany ordinary cast-on.Budding Lace Beginning (Chart 1)Row 1 (RS): k2, *yo, k1, yo, place marker,* k1,repeat between *s, k2. The shawl uses lace motifs representing a bird in flight, a tree, and a bell, ending with the traditional ‘Shetland’ fishtail lace pattern. My version is worked in a colourway reminiscent of the view of the trees I could see from my window or walking along Queen Margaret bridge in the

the corner turn at the centre of the shawl. EXAMPLE In the To The Point Shawl, shown above with pink background, there are 113 sts from the edge to the ch 2 space at the point of the shawl. I usually factor the first and last stitch as a buffer zone edge and I don’t count the point space as a stitch as well.
