Creating a CharacterBefore StartingGetting StartedTable NumbersDiceExplanationsLet's do it! Grab your favorite bag of dice,and we'll start creating super-exciting, dynamiccharacters that look, feel, and act like they justwalked out of the pages of an epic fantasy.In addition to this book, make sure youhave the following items:A Variety of Dice: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 andd20—if you don't know what these are, seeDice Explanations, below.A Copy of the Character Worksheet: TaskForce Games grants permission to photo-copy the worksheet on pages 191-192 forpersonal use only. Make sure you have atleast one copy for each character you wishto make.A Pencil.An Eraser.Numbered Bookmarks: These record yourprogress as you jump from place to place.Creating character histories is fun, but ittakes time. Plan on spending as much as a halfhour per character. However, there are short cuts you can take. For a quick NPC (or playercharacter) history, go to Appendix A: NPCs onpage 176. If you just want to get going, jumpahead to section 101 Race and Ancestry andstart rolling dice. On the other hand, if you wantto know what to do when you get there. readon.You have probably noticed that most sec tions and tables in Heroes of Legend start withthree-digit codes like 101 or 625. There arereasons for this.Initially, you will consult these sections andtables in sequence. After 101 Race and Ances try you will go to 102 Cultural Background, thento 103 Social Status and so on. When youcomplete section 521 Alignment & Attitude,you will be done (mostly).However, you might ask, if the history endsat section 521, why do section numbers go ashigh as 969? Good question.The rest of the sections in this book are likedata banks in a computer or reference books ina library. The section numbers divide the tablesinto nine general categories. As you generateyour character background, you will be jump-ing around from section to section, grabbing abit of data here, some information there, untilyou finally complete your character history.To use Heroes of Legend, you must have aset of polyhedron dice: 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 20 sided. You should have at least two 10 or 20 siders of different colors (to create percentileresults), but one each of the others will besufficient. In all likelihood, the place where youbought this book can supply you with the diceas well.Throughout Heroes of Legend, abbrevia tions are used to refer to the different die types.The fetter " d " preceding a number indicates adie. The number following the "d" is thenumber of sides on the die and usually indicatesthe highest number that die can roll. A numberpreceding the "d" indicates the number of diceof that kind to be rolled. However,it is often marked 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,7, 8, 9. When used as a d10, thezero means 10. A 20-sided dieeasily simulates a d10 if it is markedfrom 0-9 twice (and not 1-20).A 12-sided die: This generates anumber from 1 to 12.d20A 20-sided die: This generates anumber from 1 to 20. However,many d20s are marked 0 to 9 likea d10, but repeated twice. In thiscase, you need to indicate whichset of 0 to 9 represents 1 to 10and which set represents 11 to20. Try coloring each set ofnumbers with differently coloredpens or crayons. Alternatively,use a d10 and a d6 to simulatethe result of a d20. Roll the d10for a number from 1 to 10, andthe d6 to obtain a "Hi/Lo" value.If the d6 is Lo, the d10 value is 1to 10. If the d6 is Hi, add 10 tothe d10 roll to get a number from11 to 20.d100A 100-sided die: This generatesa number from 1 to 100. If youdo not have a true 100-sided die,a d100 can easily be simulatedwith two different colored d10s.Choose one d10 to representthe 10's digit (multiply the dieresult by 10 for 0 through 90)and the other to represent theone's digit (0 through 9). Addthe results. Example: results of40 (4 x 10) and 6 added togetherbecome a result of 46. The onlyexception is a roll of 0 and 0,which yields the result of 100.Percentiles Often, Heroes of Legend will statethat there is a percentage chancethat some circumstance will oc cur, such as, "There is a 15%chance the character will be lefthanded." To obtain a percentileresult, roll a d100 (see above). Ifthe result is less than or equal tothe given percentage chance, thecircumstance occurs. Otherwise,the circumstance does not oc cur.The form on pages 191-192 is the Heroesof Legend Character History Worksheet, onwhich you will be recording character back ground information as you generate it on thetables in this book. You have permission fromTask Force Games to copy that form for yourpersonal use, so make as many as you need.Several lines of the Character HistoryWorksheet correspond to table numbers else where in the Heroes of Legend book.
