Holland Van GoreArtist StatementTaking a piece of wood destinedfor the fireplace or landfill and makingsomething a friend, relative or collector wants to take home with them is arewarding experience that never getsold.I take cues from the inspiration ofall I see around me and that in turnpushes me to create my own idea ofnatural beauty. Most my work has anorganic feel to it and I still aim for thatquality.Early in my woodworking career, Iwas introduced to the lathe - the toolthat would become the center of mycreativity. I knew very little about thelathe starting out, but loved how apiece of wood could be shaped into aform quickly and easily compared to asaw, plane, or chisel.I’m always tempted to experiment with different forms and textures, which eventually led me to try atechnique known as “lost wood”. Thismethod involves removing a predetermined amount of wood from a turnedwork after it comes off the lathe, thustransforming it into an altogether different shape-often an elongated oval. This process allows for a shape that’svery different from most other typicallathe work. This past year I was introducedto the ancient art of milk paint. Theoldest painted surfaces on earth werecolored with simple environmentallyfriendly composition of milk, lime andearth pigments. I apply milk paint inmultiple layers and colors, and becauseof it’s soft velvety qualities, it give me alook and feel I am happy with.BioHolland Van Gores was born inSouthern California in 1953. He beganworking with wood, building skateboards, model airplanes, and anythinghe could in his father’s shop. His art-ist mother taught him the beauty ofnature and the limitless diversity ofshapes, textures, and colors, as well asthe wonder they emanate. After high school Van Gores traveledto and explored Mexico, Panama,San Blas Islands, Grand Cayman, andCosta Rica. The jungles of Costa Ricafascinated him enough to prolong hisstay of seven months. Those travels inspired him to leave California in 1979,buy a sailboat and begin the adventureof sailing through out the Caribbean. With his tools onboard he combinedhis love of the sea and woodworking. He married his “Island Girl” who cameto the Caribbean from Michigan. Theyset sail for South America exploringdozens of Islands and the many diversecultures through out the chain. Afterthe adventure of a lifetime Van Goresand his wife Mickie moved to dry land, were blessed with twin girls, and builta tropical home in a rain forest highon a mountain slope. He continued hisconstruction business while balancingfatherhood and woodturning. Most ofhis work is done using fallen or discarded trees as he saw firsthand the devastation clear cutting did to the area wherehe had lived in Costa Rica.2013 has brought a major change tothe Van Gores family as they havemoved from the island of St. Thomasto the Brevard area and now call ithome. Van Gores will continue hiswoodworking while looking for otheropportunities to add to his manyexperiences.
