Lintel Installation1Lintels should be installed with a minimum end bearingof 150mm, bedded on mortar and levelled along itslength and across its width.2The masonry above the lintel should be builtin accordance with BS EN 1996-2:2006.34566Raise the inner and outer leaves simultaneously to avoidexcessive eccentricity of loading, with a maximum heightdifference of 225mm (masonry should be laid on a mortarbed and all perpendicular joints should be filled).Allow the mortar to cure before applying floor or roofloads (Temporary propping beneath a steel lintel ispractised to facilitate speed of construction). The NHBC recommend a damp proof course (DPC)or cavity tray should be installed over all openings inexternal cavity walls.ENSURE LINTEL IS LEVELALONG ITS LENGTHEnsure lintel isnot damaged.Ensure anominal150mm endbearing ateach end.Ensure lintel is level along its length.150mmminimum150mmminimumEnsure lintel is fully bedded onbricklaying mortarStructural openingor clear spanLINTEL POSITION WITHINA CAVITY WALLWhen installing concrete floor units or other heavycomponents above a lintel, care should be taken toavoid shock loading and floor units should not bedragged into position. Masonry immediately abovethe lintel should be allowed to cure.INSIDEOUTSIDE789Point loads should not be applied directly onto lintelflanges. Lintels should have a minimum of 150mmmasonry between the flange and the application levelof any form of loading. Consult Keystone’s technicaldepartment if applying a point load above a lintel. The external lintel flange must project beyond thewindow/door frame and it is recommended that a flexiblesealing compound is used between the underside of thelintel flange and the frame.ABAAEnsure lintelis level acrossits width.Lintel should becentred in the cavity andthe distance betweenlintel up-stand andmasonry must notexceed 8.5mmBMasonry should notoverhang any flange bymore than 25mm.PROPPINGWhen the underside of a lintel is exposed, its appearancecan be enhanced by the addition of lintel soffit cladding.10 Do not cut lintels to length or modify them in any waywithout consulting a Keystone engineer. In accordance with BS EN1996-2:2006 and NHBCrequirements all externalwall lintels MUST beinstalled with a flexibledamp proof course withthe exception of thoseadequately protectedby an eaves overhang orsimilar form of protection.INSIDEOUTSIDETimber PlankThe practice of propping a lintelis sometimes used to facilitatespeed of construction. It shouldonly be introduced after initialmasonry load has been appliedto the lintel. When propping a lintel, ahorizontal timber plank shouldbe placed along the undersideof the lintel and suitable* propssecured into place at maximum1200mm centres.* Suitability of props isthe responsibility of sitemanagement.
