HarnessRacing Weekend Preview, 4 of 9November 11, 2016A trio of Chris Beaver-trained 2-year-old colt trotters willline up behind the gate Friday night at Woodbine Racetrackin a pair of eliminations for the Valley Victory, a fourth of theFall Final Four stakes that will ultimately be decided on Saturday, Nov. 19.Beaver will start Fraser Ridge and Andy M in the first ValleyVictory elim (Race 6) with the pair respectively bookendingthe field by starting in posts 1 and 8. Moonshiner Hanoverwill start from the outside post 7 in the second split (Race 8).With 258,631 in earnings, Moonshiner Hanover is therichest of Beaver’s trio of Valley Victory hopefuls. Althoughthe son of Andover Hall is the fifth richest freshman maletrotter in 2016, he’s only posted one victory. MoonshinerHanover opened up his career with a 1:57.3 victory in aPennsylvania Sires Stakes (PASS) over a “sloppy” track atThe Meadows on July 15, but in nine subsequent starts he’sbeen unable to find the winner’s circle, although he has sixsecond-place finishes.Picking up lucrative checks via runner-up efforts in the 600,000 Breeders Crown and 252,000 PASS championship, Moonshiner Hanover has returned a tidy profit toBeaver and partners Bill Manes and Synerco Ventures, whopaid 27,000 for the colt as a yearling.“I don’t think the outside post should hurt him badly ashe’s been real quick off the gate,” Beaver noted about drawing post 7. “And Scott (driver Zeron) gets along with him.”Moonshiner Hanover has raced on Lasix his last twostarts, and Fraser Ridge has been on the anti-bleeding medication his last four outings. Fraser Ridge comes into theValley Victory elims with a 10-3-4-1 record and 133,561 inearnings. His three wins have all come in the Ohio SiresStakes, including a career-best 1:56.4 effort (which missedthe track record by one-fifth of a second) at Northfield Park.Fraser Ridge, who will be driven by David Miller in theelim, finished second last time out as the 7-5 favorite in the 72,500 Madison County at Hoosier Park. After starting fromJay Wolf PhotoBeaver Is Busy With ThreeIn Valley Victory Elimswww.harnessracing.comthe trailing post 10 and getting away fourth, driver AaronMerriman moved Fraser Ridge to the front at the half, butdespite opening up a 4 ¾-length midstretch lead, could nothold on and lost the photo by a nose to Lindy The Great(who starts from post 5 in Moonshiner Hanover’s elim).“Last time out (Merriman) movedhim to the front because he was theheavy favorite, but he’s a lot betterfollowing,” explained Beaver. “Hewears himself out on the front end.”Beaver said Fraser Ridge’s second-place finish in Walner’s worldrecord 1:51.3 mile in an“I don’t think the International Stallion division onOct. 6 at The Red Mile fully disoutside postshould hurt him played the colt’s talent.“At The Red Mile he showed hebadly as he’scanreally go a lot when he getsbeen real quicktherighttrip,” said Beaver. “He’s aoff the gate.”lot better when he’s following–Chris Beaver onspeed.”Moonshiner HanoverBeaver also shares ownership ofFraser Ridge with Donald Robinson, Robert Mondillo andRBH Ventures Inc. The partnership purchased the son of Triumphant Caviar for 29,000 as a yearling.Beaver has tabbed Trevor Henry to drive Andy M, who carries the name of co-breeder Andy Miller. The son of AndoverHall—who is a half brother to this year’s top 3-year-old fillytrotter Spicedbourbongirl—was a 27,000 buyback by cobreeders Mark Moger and Albert Delia Jr.After three wins and three seconds in his first nine starts,Andy M broke his maiden last time out on Oct. 15 at TheMeadows, capturing the 51,700 Keystone Classic in 1:57.The nose victory brought his earnings to 59,366.“We were going to quit with him after the win but theowners gave me a call and said they wanted to go aheadand give him a try (in the Valley Victory),” said Beaver.—ByGordon WaterstoneUpdated NewsRound-The-Clockharnessracing.com

HarnessRacing Weekend Preview, 6 of 9November 11, 2016Harrisburg Yearling SaleFinishes With Strong IncreasesThe yearling portion of the Standardbred Horse SalesCompany’s annual Harrisburg auction concludedWednesday night at about 6:30 p.m. and from the standpoint of the sales company and consignors/breeders, itwas a big success. The average price for a yearling climbed by 25.9 percent, jumping from 30,844 to 38,825. The medianprice—the point where half the horses were sold for halffor less—increased from 20,000 to 25,000, a bump of25 percent.Last year’s Harrisburg yearling sale posted substantiallyweaker results than the Lexington Selected sale held a fewweeks earlier. The Monday-morning quarterbacks cited twofactors for the declines in Harrisburg: the structure of thesale sessions and the gloom and doom atmosphere thatwas created by an announcement that there was no moneyto run the Pennsylvania state racing commissions and ashutdown of racing was imminent.www.harnessracing.com”I don’t think last year’s format was that big of a deal,”said Paul F. “Pete” Spears, president, CEO and treasurerof the Standardbred Horse Sales Company, of last year sopening session with 252 horses (82 more than thisyear). “Last year the statements from the governor’s office (about shutting down racing) created a very discouraging atmosphere. The sale had a cloud hanging over iton Monday and as Monday goes, soThe mediangoes the rest of the sale.”price rose byThis year the opening session on25 percent.Monday opened with a bang and it setthe tone for the remainder of the sale.Six of the first 10 yearlings in the auction ring were consigned by Hanover Shoe Farms. HarnessRacing Weekend Preview, 7 of 9November 11, 2016Ryan Randolph Photolings for an average price of 46,733, up 42 percent fromthe farm’s 32,880 average in Harrsburg when it sold230 head. This year’s Harrisburg sale topper, finally walking out ofthe ring after a bid of 410,000 was the Hanover consignedStory Time Hanover, a colt by Muscle Hill and the first foalout of the stakes winner Shared Past. In addition to herown racing credentials, Shared Past’s half brother is Dejarmbro. Although trainer Jimmy Takter was not in attendance at the sale, he deputized Perry Soderberg to bid onthe colt. According to Swedish reports, Rune Andersson, who races horses under the stable name of Melby Gard, will own the colt.More evidence of the strength of this year’s sale was thebig increase in the number of horses commanding prices of 100,000 or more. Last year just 37 yearlings sold for sixfigures or more; this year it climbed to 63.The increases in the average and median prices translatedinto increases in averages for all but four of the 24 consignments that also sold at Harrisburg in 2015.Spears said the results of the sale make it likely the 2017edition of the yearling auction will again have a shorter session on Monday and two longer sessions on Tuesday andWednesday.www.harnessracing.com“I received quite a few compliments about the sale startingat noon on Monday,” said Spears. “People liked having timeto come in Monday and start looking at yearlings. And as aresult we had a lot of people in the building Monday.”—ByKathy Parker
