Buddah Earns BowsFor Big 6 Months-NEW YORKBarely sixmonths after coming to BuddahRecords, General Manager NeilBogart, R&B Director CecilHolmes, Pop Director MartyThau and West Coast Sales Promotion Manager Bob Krasnow have catapulted the labelto the top of the charts with thenumber one record, 'Green Tambourine," by the Limon Pipers.Of the 14 single releasesmade by the Buddah team, sixhave been charters: "GreenTambourine" (Lemon Pipers)"A Million to One" and "Something's Missing" (Five Stair steps & Cubie), "Simon Says"(1910 Fruitgum Co.) , "DearDad" (Jim McCurdy) and "AsLong As You're Here" (ZallyYanovsky).Currently, Buddah has threechart singles, and the release ofthe "Green Tambourine" LPlast week, plus the Five Stair steps & Cubie set, "Our FamilyPortrait," and Penny Nichols'"Penny's Arcade" LP should putBuddah into the album charts as,well.Other Buddah artists likeCaptain Beefheart & His MagicBand, whose LP "Safe As Milk"is very popular in England(Krasnow recently returnedfrom Britain where he accompanied the Beefheart group ontour) and calypso star LordBurgess with "Calypso Au GoGo." give the young label a surprisingly broad scope of recorded product.Novel ExperimentThe establishment of a fulltime sales and promotion stafffor a label owned by an independent production firm-KamaSutra Productionswas regarded as a novel experiment inthe record industry. Phil Steinberg, one of the Kama Sutratoppers, says, "The experimenthas produced a sales chemistrythat produces explosions chargedby the team of Bogart, Holmes,Thau and Krasnow."Solid professionalism coupledwith inventiveness in promotionand a sheer love of action havegalvanized Buddah. In the plethora of "answer" records to Victor Lundberg's "Open Letter toMy Teenage Son," Buddah's"reply" of "Dear Dad" was theonly one to make the charts.Likewise, Buddah has the firstU.S. release of the much -recorded "Ballad of BonnieClyde," by the Chicago Prohibition 1931,(Continued on page 37)Brolly Appointed Managing Dir.Of British MCA Records Ltd.Brian Brolly has been ap-In addition to being namedpointed Managing Director ofMCA Records Ltd., a Britishcompany, announces MCA, Inc.Managing Director of MCARecords Ltd., Brolly also willbecome a Director of all otherMCA United Kingdom companies, including UniversalPictures Ltd. and MCA (England) TV Ltd. Touring Blues BreakersA Hit on New Album, TooLondon Records has reportedimmediate sales activity for"Crusade," the third and mostrecent album by John Mayall'sBlues Breakers for the label. The fast-moving set by theBritish group was among the40 LPs presented by the company at its national sales convention, held earlier this yearat the Concord Hotel.Sales figures on Mayall's"Crusade" album are reportedto have exceeded all figures onboth prior albums within twoweeks of its release. An additional highlight of the LP's instant success is the group's current tour here, their first in theUnited States.Mayall and the Blues Breakers arrived in New York Cityon Jan. 9 to open a two-weekengagement at Greenwich Village's Cafe Au Go Go onWednesday (Jan. 10). LennyMeisel, national LP promotionmanager for London, accompanied the group during theirstay in the city.Ballroom Riotous'Success greeted them in Detroit, too, where leader JohnMayall described the crowds atthe Grande Ballroom as "absolutely riotous" in their enthusiasm. Alan Mitnick, London's regional promo man, tookcharge of the group duringtheir one -day stay (Jan. 23)there.The Blues Breakers arrivedin Los Angeles on Wednesday(24). On hand to welcome themwas Gerry Hoff, London's WestCoast regional promotion manager. The group's opening atHollywood's Whiskey A Go Goon Thursday (25) was attendedby a generous selection of popluminaries, among them NoelHarrison, the Monkees and fellow Britishers the Bee Gees.Audience approval and criticalplaudits resulted in an invitation from the Whiskey to extend the engagement for threedays through Wednesday (Jan.31).The Blues Breakers then proceeded to San Francisco onThursday (Feb. 1) for a weekend appearance at the FillmoreAuditorium, to be followed bya second there on Feb. 8-9-10.Gerry Hoff, who accompaniedthe group in Los Angeles, traveled with them to San Francisco.London Records has also announced the imminent arrivalin this country of the AlanPrice Set, also represented inthe label's January release; andof Tom Jones, who will beginan extended personal appearance tour here with a two-weekengagement at New York's Copacabana starting Feb. 15.Franklin ConcertAretha Franklin will performat a gala "Homecoming Concert" in Detroit's Cobo Hall onFeb. 16. (Also,Marcia Rodd, as a rock boni face Olivia, is terrific.)Record World also tuned in to"The Happy Time," in whichRobert Goulet is showing anall-new and very warm image. This entry is extremely professional in these days when "professional" is shrinking into afour-letter word. The problemwith this one is, however, thatit has no story. Literally thereis a point int he second actwhen absolutely nothing ofdramatic conflict is going on.Fred Ebb and John Kander, who wrote "Cabaret," havecomposed a quartet of slickditties-"The Happy Time," "ACertain Girl," "The Life of theParty," "I Don't RememberYou"-that, coupled with theGoulet name, will make thecaster valuable-more so, onewould assume, than "Your OwnThing," which has the polishof Broadway but not the trueexperimentation one would expect from off-Broadway.Ted Shapirofever treeis comingElls ReginaBrazilian Seen(ESP PRDirectorNEW YORK-Ramona Smithhas been named Director ofPublic Relations for ESP andORO Records.6RCA Casters(Continued from page 3)ments at ABC Records, with anemphasis on finance and efficiency of operation.Coming to ABC from KappRecords which he joined in1959, Shapiro has recently beenassistant treasurer of KappRecords, Inc., and general manager of its international division.
