Why Did the Romans Invade Britain?

1. Britain had lots of goods thatthe Romans wanted LeadWoodTinWoolSlavesGoldSilverCorn

CornAs the Roman Empiregrew bigger, there weremore and more people tofeed. More Romansstarted living in towns,leaving fewer people inthe country to grow crops.Rome needed to importmore food and Britain wasa very fertile land.

Raw Materials: WoolBritain had a good supply of sheep. Woolwas needed for making Roman togas.

Raw Materials: LeatherThe Roman armyused a lot of leatherfor uniforms andsoldiers’ tents.Leather was alsoused to makebuckets.

Valuable Metals: Silver The Romans made their money out of silver –more coins were needed as the Empire grew. Britain already had silver mines that theRomans knew about. Silver was a luxury item for rich Romans – sothere was a big demand for it.

Gold Gold was used for jewellery and was in greatdemand by the Romans. Gold was very important in trade as a meansof exchange and for gold coins. There was a scarcity of gold across the Empire,but Britain had lots of gold.

TinBritain also had tin mines and tin andpewter were used for cups and plates.Tin could be mixed with other metals tomake strong, hard metals.

The Romans used a lot of lead! Lead was really useful for the Romans andBritain had a good supply of it. Lead was used to make water pipes andplumbing systems Lead was also used to make coffins.

Slaves Romans planned to usedcaptured Celts as slaves. Roman society ran on thebasis of slave labour andthere was big demand forslaves right across theempire. Slaves were used to workin every type of industry,from nurse maids, to fieldhands, miners and as galleyslaves to row Roman ships.

Slaves could also be made to fight asGladiators, to entertain the Romans.

2. Power! The Romans didn’t just want goodsfrom Britain, they also wanted toinvade to show how powerful theywere. By conquering more and morecountries and making their Empirebigger, it made Rome morepowerful.
