INTRODUCTIONIn the early 1940’s the Pacific region is made up of a number ofterritories controlled by European and American powers. In order tobecome the superpower it aspires to be, the Japanese must wrest controlof these territories and seize their vast supply of natural resources. Thisis the spark that ignites the War in the Pacific and brings America andJapan into World War II.GAME CONTROLSXbox 360 ControllerLeft TriggerLeft Bumper]x Right Trigger Right BumperY ButtonUS CAMPAIGNAfter the battle of Midway, the US and Allied forces have managed toturn the tide in the battle for control of the Pacific. But total victory isa long way off; the Imperial Japanese Navy still remains a formidableopponent and will be looking to exact revenge for the sinking of itscarriers at Midway.Left StickX ButtonL Back ButtonJAPANESE CAMPAIGNB ButtonA ButtonClDirectional PadTora! USING THE RADARThe Radar and Compass provide anoverview of the location of other units inrelation to your unit. You can use the map to access a more detailed Map Screen.NOTE: The compass shows the direction youare looking, NOT the direction your unit isheading.Red markBlue markGrey markGold markSky Blue markCentral ArrowPie Section–––––––Japanese unitUS unitNeutral unitPrimary objectiveSecondary objectiveDirection of travelField of visionThe crosshair info contains the unit’s type, name, health level and distancefrom your unit. If the distance display turns grey the unit is outside of yourselected weapon’s range. Some land installations are indestructible but they can be disabled by thedamage caused to them. While in this state they can’t fulfill their role and theyare displayed with a grey name and health bar.TARGETINGOne of the most important orders available in your commanding arsenal isthe ability to assign targets to units. A unit with an active target will use itsweapons to destroy it. See ORDERS section for further details.TARGET INFOThe target info displays the details of your current target; the unit ismarked with a colored targeting arrow.ACQUIRE CLOSEST ENEMY AS TARGETTo select the closest enemy to your position press A.Press A repeatedly to cycle through other potential targets.NOTE: While in a unit capable of joining a formation, holding A over a friendlyship issues the Join Formation command. See Formation section for details.Use the compass and direction of travel indicators to help you control the unit’smovement when operating a weapon.ACQUIRE UNIT CLOSEST TO CROSSHAIR AS TARGETTo select the unit closest to the crosshairs, press and hold A.THE CROSSHAIRCLEAR SELECTED TARGETTo deselect the current target press B.The crosshair shows which weapons system is currently selected and thestatus of those weapons. It changes depending upon which weapon is selected.MARKERSDISABLED CROSSHAIRThis is its neutral state which means that you have no availableweapons or that they are currently disabled.Units on the game screen are marked with color coded brackets and arrows tohelp you determine their position, distance, allegiance and whether they areobjective units or not.FRIENDLY INDICATORWhenever your crosshair is over a friendly unit its inner circleturns green.Red BracketBlue BracketGold BracketSilver BracketBronze BracketGrey BracketHIT INDICATORCROSSHAIR INFOWhenever you hit a target with your active weapon thecrosshair turns red or grey depending on whether your hitwas effective or not.––––––Japanese unitUS unitPrimary objectiveSecondary objectiveBonus objective markerNeutral or unknown unitWhenever you select a unit as a target, its marker will change into an arrow ofthe same color.A pointer to indicate the direction of objective units and targets is shown on theedge of the screen if they are not in your current field of view. This provides information on the unit that is nearest toyour crosshair.10BSP XB360 MANUAL UK.indd 10-111117/2/09 15:01:09

SHIPS AND SURFACE CRAFTThis section provides a detailed overview of the basic ship controlsand terminology.MOVEMENT AND THE HELM CONTROLSThe helm controls allow you to pilot the ship and control the speed of theengines. Additionally it displays the onboard stock of any limited equipment.11Rudder direction2Speed setting ahead (Forwards)3 Speed setting astern (Backwards)4 Current speed264575Torpedoes onboard6 Recon planes / Landing boats onboard837 Failure Display8 Formation IndicatorSTEERING S / FThe heading you set the rudder on holds until you make another control input.Any other orders set will override this.SETTING SPEED M / QA ship’s engines propel the craft fore (forwards) and aft (reverse). Once thespeed is set, only another input from you or issuing other orders will changethis setting.AIMING CUse the C to look around your ship and to acquire targets. Click the C to usethe Binoculars to spot enemy units over a longer distance.FAILURE DISPLAYDirect hits to your vessel will cause failures. A red circle will appear around thefailure type icon whenever this happens. If this icon is marked, a hullbreach has occurred. While engine failure ispresent your ship will driftin the water.Indicates if fire is presentonboard which will slowlydamage your ship.Enemy attacks can disableyour weapons.REPAIR LClick the L to open the Repair Menu. See Repairs section for details.FORMATION DISPLAYShips can be grouped into formations for easier handling. See Formationssection for details.Your unit is theformation leaderYour unit is a member of theformationNo icon indicates your unit isn’t in a formation.WEAPON SYSTEMSThe key to a warship’s power are its weapon systems.Aim Weapon– CFire Weapon– Change Weapon– ]AA CROSSHAIRThe crosshair for the Anti-Aircraft (AA) and flak cannons differs fromthose of other ship-borne ordnance in one crucial way – they aredynamic. This means the crosshair’s appearance changes when yourshots are on target.ARTILLERY CROSSHAIRArtillery are large caliber main guns, suitable for attackingarmored vessels, large cargo ships, land based fortifications aswell as other surface targets. They cannot be aimed at airborne units. Firing the guns continuously willdecrease the accuracy of any following shots. Therefore, firing one shell at atime might increase the chances of hitting the target.12BSP XB360 MANUAL UK.indd 12-131317/2/09 15:01:10

TORPEDO CROSSHAIRThese propeller-powered underwater missiles are guaranteed tohole any ship they strike. Ships with hull breaches are very likely tosink, unless quickly repaired. However, torpedoes are difficult to aimat long distances and, once launched, cannot be guided.NOTE: Torpedoes are most effective when a group of them are fired in an arc, known as a spread. This technique gives the helmsman of the enemy ship muchless room to maneuver and avoid all the torpedoes launched.DEPTH CHARGE CROSSHAIRThe Depth Charge is effective against submerged submarines.Depth charges cannot be directly aimed at a target as they aredropped from the back of the boat. They require skilful pilotingmaneuvers and split-second timing to use successfully. To move to underwater view and drop depth charges, pull the . Further pulls release additional groups of charges. You can still control the ship’smovement with the L.WEAPON STATUS ––––Weapon is unable to fire at that target due toangle or range restrictions.Weapon is currently changing direction and willbe ready soon.Weapon is ready to fire.Weapon is reloading.Weapon is out of ammunition.Weapon is damaged, but repairable.AIRCRAFTThis section details the basic control of all types of aircraft at your disposal.More detailed control of groups of aircraft (known as squadrons) is covered inthe Launching a Squadron section.AIRCRAFT GAME SCREEN6135421Throttle2Air Speed IndicatorROLL J / FUse Roll to bank the aircraft which causes the airplane to turn to the leftor right.PITCH D / HA pitch motion is an up or down movement of the nose of the aircraft thiscauses the plane to dive or climb.THROTTLE M / QThe throttle sets the desired engine power level; thus determining the speed.YAW S / OA yaw motion is a side to side movement of the nose of the aircraft caused bythe deflection of the rudder of the aircraft. This can be used for making slightchanges in direction.NOTE: Flight controls and throttle controls should be used simultaneously ifyou’re to become an ace pilot.ALTIMETERThis gauge indicates your plane’s current height above sea level. If it flashesred, you are very close to a collision with the ground or sea.ARTIFICIAL HORIZONThis instrument allows you to gauge what attitude your plane is, in relation tothe horizon. The blue segment indicates the ground or surface of the ocean. The white segment represents the sky. The central line is the horizon.SPEED BOOSTMost planes are capable of an engine overdrive to increase your maximumspeed for a short duration. Click and hold the L to use the boost mode. The gauge will slowly regenerate when not in use.AIRCRAFT WEAPON SYSTEMSAIRCRAFT MACHINE GUNSThis weapon has a dynamic crosshair to show whether your shotsare on target or not.3 Altimeter4Artificial Horizon5Boost Indicator6 Armament Info14BSP XB360 MANUAL UK.indd 14-15ENGINES AND FLIGHT CONTROLS Pull to fire weapon. Use the flight controls to aim the weapons. If you are leading a squadron, the rest of the squadron will attack the targetspecified by you. If there are no targets assigned, they will attack the sameunit as you.1517/2/09 15:01:11

AIMING AT MOVING TARGETSWhen attacking moving airborne targets with the forward firingmachineguns; you must aim the weapon to fire where the target willbe and not where it currently is. A Target Lead Indicator will showwhere to fire.PLANE STATUSNOTE: The Target Lead Indicator can be turned off in the Options menu. The Unit Window details the health of the squadron leader, while the numbershows how many squadron members there are.Remember to keep an eye on your damage status in the unit window. To repairdamaged units automatically, order them to land.See Giving Orders to Squadrons section for details on controlling multipleaircraft in operations.BOMB MODEBombs are primed and aimed using the Bomb Mode. This crosshairis calibrated to compensate for your forward movement, so dropyour bombs when the crosshair is on your target. To activate the Bomb Mode crosshair, pull and hold w Pull the to release the bomb when the target is under the crosshair. If you keep the pressed in after releasing the bomb you can follow thetrajectory of the ordnance with the Bomb camera.NOTE: The AI will take over control of your plane while your camera followsthe ordnance.TORPEDOESTorpedoes must be dropped from just above the water and cannot becontrolled once launched. The yellow lines of the crosshair indicateyour attitude and must be in alignment in order to launch thetorpedo successfully. Flying at too steep an angle at release will causethe torpedo to detonate upon impact with the water. The controls are the same as in Bomb Mode, pull and hold w to activate theTorpedo Mode then pull to release the ordnance. If you keep the pressed in after releasing the torpedo you can follow thetrajectory of the ordnance with the Torpedo camera.ROCKETSSome war planes are equipped with air-to-air or air-to-surfacerockets. These rapid flying projectiles deliver quite an impact to yourtarget. The controls are similar to firing machine guns but you must select Rocketsby holding the w whilst firing. If you keep the pressed in after firing the rockets the camera will followthe trajectory of the rocket.SUBMARINESThis section details the basic control of submarines.MOVEMENTAs well as the helm controls that are foundon a ship, the submarine has additionalcontrols for diving and surfacing. It is alsoequipped with an air supply indicatorand a periscope for covert surveillance ofsurface targets.DEPTH LEVEL INDICATORSubmarines in Battlestations: Pacificmove in two planes. The first set ofmovement controls (on the L) are identicalto surface craft and react identically aboveor below surface. The submarine’s dive and surfacing functions are controlled using m /q.This enables the sub to operate at four depth levels.LEVEL 1 (SURFACE)On the surface, the sub is highly visible to other ships so it is vulnerable toenemy ordnance, including torpedoes. However, the sub can travel faster onthe surface and it can deploy its torpedoes and any deck mounted weaponry. Subs must surface intermittently to replenish their air supply. On the surface, cycle through weapon systems with thew.LEVEL 2 (PERISCOPE DEPTH)At this depth, the sub is invisible to units without Sonar. Those equipped withSonar (destroyers, recon planes, etc.) can still locate a sub at this depth. Subs arevery vulnerable to depth charges at this level.NOTE: The tell-tale ping of the Sonar shows that you’ve been spotted by anenemy unit. To avoid detection, open the map to check on the enemy unit’sSonar range (denoted by the green area).16BSP XB360 MANUAL UK.indd 16-171717/2/09 15:01:11

Use the periscope to assist you in aiming torpedoes at enemy targets. To raise/lower the periscope press the C.NOTE: A raised periscope mast can be destroyed if it makes contact with anotherunit, though it can be repaired.LEVEL 3You are unable to fire your torpedoes at this depth but it is ideal for skulkingaround and maneuvering your sub into position. While enemy units have moredifficulty targeting you with depth charges, your ship is still vulnerable todamage from well-aimed charges.LEVEL 4Operating the sub at this depth for extended periods causes the pressure hullto rupture with potentially catastrophic consequences. Conversely, your sub isinvisible to Sonar and is invulnerable to depth charges. Dive to this depth onlyin emergencies and only for brief periods in order to evade expert sub killers.AIR SUPPLYSubmarines possess a limited supply of fresh air for use by theirengines and crew while submerged. When the gauge on the sub’s helmcontrol enters the red ‘low air’ sector, you need to surface to take onmore air. Use the map to choose your surfacing location carefully.DEPLOYMENTSuicide units are used like any other units in the game but they cannot be equippedwith weapons. They will show up as a different unit class in the selection menu.Units like the Ohka and the Kaiten are carried by a mother plane or submarine. They can be launched by selecting the Betty/Ohka or Type-B/Kaiten from theairfield/shipyard control panel.See Launching New Units section for details.ADVANCED MANAGEMENTSYSTEMSAs missions become more complex, you need to balance your time betweenmanually commanding a particular unit and issuing orders to all your unitsand squadrons. You will also need to be able to repair failures quickly andorder reinforcements.TACTICAL MAP SCREENThe Map Screen is your center of operations. You can command your entire fleetthrough this dynamic map while observing all enemy unit information suppliedby your units. Press to access the Tactical Map.NOTE: If you do not surface manually, the sub surfaces automatically to refillair supplies.WEAPONSSubmarines are equipped with torpedoes as standard. Torpedoes can only belaunched at periscope depth or when surfaced. Most subs are also equippedwith deck-mounted AA guns; some larger subs may even sport an artillerypiece for use against armored targets. Deck-mounted weapons can only beused when the sub is surfaced. In order to hit an enemy submarine with torpedoes from your sub, you needto first set it as a target with A. This will ensure that the torpedo travels atthe correct depth.See Weapon Systems section for usage of ship-borne weapons systems.54132JAPANESE SUICIDE CRAFTSuicide units are available only on the Japanese side.NOTE: Kamikaze attacks made by non kamikaze planes (including all US planes)will do no damage.TYPESThere are various ways to launch a suicide attack: Normal planes converted and loaded with explosives Motor boats converted and loaded with explosives Kaiten - a human guided torpedo Ohka - a rocket propelled human missile18BSP XB360 MANUAL UK.indd 18-194 Ranges: Green - Sonar,1 Selected Unit2 Selected Unit Info Panel3 Cursor Unit Info5 FiltersBright - Visual Detection,Grey - Radar1917/2/09 15:01:12

Standingorders affect the way a unit automatically reacts when you are not directlycontrolling the unit.SHIPS / BOATS / SUBMARINESDefensive Stance means the unit’s gunners may fire upon enemyunits if there is no target selected by the player. The use of limitedammunition weapons like torpedoes are restricted to player selectedtargets. The AI won’t stray from the plotted course to engage enemies. In Aggressive Stance the ship may move where the AI decides isbest to engage with enemy units. The gunners are authorized touse all necessary force including limited ammunition equipment todestroy any enemies in range. Player selected targets are handledwith priority though.
